Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    • In complete agreement w/ the proposal presented by EBO. Save those in the most danger, back up on the others as we can and donate JR to go with Frosty.

      • Hubby, who is in network security, and understandably paranoid, is not a fan of pay-pal and went nutty when I finally got him. Is there another way to send the money? Can I call someone from CBER and use my bank card? I was hoping to have it available NOW in case it was needed. Should I snail mail a check and just let it clear for the next group?

        Sorry!

        • I'm all for letting JR go to live w/ Frosty. That would be great!

I am all for getting Belize. HAs she actually foundered or is she just "in danger". If she hasn't foundered, I'm betting she'll be an easy placement!

Pepsi- well, we just don't know that much about him. I bet he's cuter than pic shows. I would love to save him too, but as CE said, we have to think about the future too. Gosh- this is always so hard!

I'm sending $45 by paypal now.

          • 3fatponies--Paypal will take credit cards as well as bank funds. I think that would be safer than giving out your bank account numbers. Would your husband be okay with that method? If not, you can priority mail a cashier's check for under $4 if you're in a hurry.

Nonetheless, if you prefer to send a regular check, by all means do so. Unfortunately, there will always be a need, whether now or next week. Don't worry that it won't be appreciated, because it is.

            • Sounds good, EBO. Belize, Patriot, and Pepsi have my votes. Do we know what happened to the pending on Belize? If someone is still interested, perhaps that would be a quick turnaround for the next shipment?

And I've wanted to ask about good ol' JR so the suggestion that he and Frosty hang out together forever is wonderful! A good deal all around.

I back up what was discussed. Pull the ones slated for today and the cuties, donate JR-he deserves it. Crossing my fingers!

                • Wow, go into a 2-hour meeting and look what happens in the interim!

Very relieved that only 3 are at risk (though that's still 3 too many) today. Am 100% in favor of EBO's suggestion and think it's wonderful that Frosty and JR can go to a new home together. Not too many opportunities present themselves for the pasture pals.

EBO, PT or e-mail if I can help with anything.

                  • Just heard from Sam, and it's mostly good news.

Patriot has been adopted. Sara has been sponsored and may become an adoptee soon. She also reiterated that there has been interest in Sugar and Nalla (same person would like both).

The only 3 that she feels we need to really worry about are Belize, Carmen and Pepsi (evidently the interest in Carmen and Belize has disappeared). Simon is unsound and is moonblind. Sam feels that he would be very hard to place, so shouldn't take a sound horse's place.

She wanted us to know that all the horses at the feedlot have been exposed to strangles, and most of them are showing running noses, etc. All will need penicillin to stop the disease, so that will be an extra expense for those we help.

Still hanging on to the bit, I told her to:

                    Let JR be adopted if possible;

                    Sponsor Belize, Carmen and Pepsi;

Stand in reserve in case Sugar and Nalla don't get a reprive; step in for Chicory if necessary, although there've been lots of inquiries.

She assured me that Sara wasn't in danger, but in a pinch, I think we could also help her.

If anyone thinks I was presumptious in telling Sam what we wanted, let me know here, and we'll hash out an alternative. We have time to change our minds. Okay???

She was on her way to the feedlot just in case the truck arrived and was going to load "our" horses. She will call me back tonight to let me know results.

Edited so I don't sound like a Nigerian scammer. English really is my mother tongue, hard as it is to believe some days.

                        • Sounds good to me! Carmen should be an easy place if shes the appy I'm thinking of.
Sucks about the strangles. I guess this will be a continual thing now its on the property?

                          • I'm good with the plan EBO, though if we run short of cash I would knock off Pepsi due to prior stated concerns.

I am swamped right now with birdies so I can't send any $$ this time round, but I should be better next month.

Thanks EBO for keeping us up to date. Must get pretty crazy up there for Sam and the others on shipping day.

I agree with releasing JR as companion horse.. CBER's foster parents appear to have quite a few to handle at the moment, so it would be nice to open up a space.

                              • Sounds like a good plan, and thanks for stepping up and taking charge, EBO. I haven't sent any funds this round- still pretty short right now from adopting/xporting Puckster, but if we reach a point where we're short less than half of what it takes to save another horse in danger, please let us all know and I'll see what I can pitch in.

                                Thanks!!

                                • Okay, Paypal and I are not friends, not by a long shot, so I am priority mailing a check for the $50 by tomorrow morning at the latest. I won't have a chance to get to the bank today, so I guess it will be personal--they should be able to hold that until it clears, right? If the shelter I foster for stays clear of bottle babies, I should be able to give more in the future, since I won't be spending $ on formula. In the meantime, I hope this bit helps and can be applied to the next deserving horse!

                                  This is addictive, isn't it....

If help is needed keeping up with the totals, I am HAPPY to do so. I'm a stay at home mom so I have extra time when the baby is napping to get stuff done. Also, I tend to check in late at night after barn time etc and can do plenty of stuff then. Just PT me if any help is needed!

                                      • Hey guys, I'd like to put together a "care package" of sorts to send to CBER for "our" group. Of course, if they needed it for the other horses that's fine too, but I thought I'd donate it in the name of "us". I was going to order penicillin, wormer, eye ointment, Nolvasan and whatever else was on the "list" of supplies needed. American Livestock Supply (or Jeffers etc) has awesome prices and Free shipping over $75.00. What I was going to order easily adds up to that.

If anyone wants to chip in, please PT me. I have a Paypal acct, and will happily FWD a copy of the invoice so you can be certain the $$ went to where it was supposed to.

                                        Just an idea

                                        • I vote to sponsor ONLY those scheduled to be on this load and no more in hopes someone will adopt the others before the next load. Sounds like Belize Pepsi and Patriot are most at risk. As far as the back-up list, I vote to wait until Sam or Wendy knows who is most at risk and tell them to sponsor whoever is scheduled to be loaded whenever the load happens. If we use all our money now, we might not have enough for a last minute save. I am not connected to the draft BB's. Did anyone try them about Sara?
