Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I loved looking at the pictures. Your boy is absolutely breathtaking. Sounds like you are off to a good start with him. Do you use Parelli methods with him (e.g., is that how he is curled up next to you?) We have just started. My daughter gave me sleigh bells for Christmas. Well we took them outside, thinking to put them around the alpha horse Duncan's neck and listen to bells all morning. The horses fled when the heard them! All it takes is for us to go out and flick one little bell and there they go. Of course we have been having fun doing this...
I am addictd to endurance riding and can't wait for the season to start up again. Here in the west the first ride is usually in March. Have fun planning.

<span class="ev_code_BLUE">Glad you enjoyed the photos and thanks for the *flowers*. We started him with John Lyons methods, and just with what we thought would work and had fun with him. 2 years ago one of my riding students made a ring of beautiful gold bells over black and gold rope (his colors), and he seems to really enjoy learning that he was making the noise! You know you can get cat/dog collars totally ringed with bells around Christmas time!!! We also had these on around his pasterns when ground driving, he loves it!! Really enjoys making the bells ring! She also gave us this neat golden heart wreath made of all gold bells with some holly on it. We used to put it on his stall door at Christmas, though we are at a non-stall-decore barn now.. so it is at home.</span>
<span class="ev_code_GREEN">Totally off subject, though there was a mare at that stable that was blind, and they had braided bells into the mane and tale of the foal so she always knew where the foal was.</span>
<span class="ev_code_BLUE">Glad to meet another distance riding addict! Our first scheduled ride is in April, though in WI that could be cancelled due to snow, you never know!!!</span>
<span class="ev_code_BLUE">Hope to do one 25 a month, starting in April, depending on how the season goes...I was thinking of doing a 25 on a Friday and one on Sunday. Thanks I am having fun planning, though I know that things change~ so I'm flexible!</span>

T2000---love your photos...you can tell you are one proud mama.
OK now you have be curious...what is it about JL that you prefer over PP? No marketing blahblah...I mean pure training philosophy and methodolgy.
Tell me what you see as the difference between the two and why one is better to you.

<span class="ev_code_PURPLE">Okay, John Lyons...hmm. I like his way with horses. I like his straight forward behavior. I like the lack of 'spin' on the games. He doesn't rip on disciplines such as dressage- he gives them respect...He doesn't rip on breeds of horses, he gives them equal respect. His horses seem happy, he tends to promote safety. He is well grounded. When he realizes something is wrong with a method, he has no problem changing it. I just wish he'd switch to pinchless bits too!</span>

<span class="ev_code_PURPLE">For an example of switching behavior, he stopped advocating getting on a horse and having it rise with the rider, as it is hard on the horse.</span>
<span class="ev_code_GREEN">He changed his mind about just riding a colt out on the trail as soon as it was acepting of a rider...Realization that a trail can un train a horse...</span>
<span class="ev_code_BLUE">Maybe it is just his general mannerism, his apparent ability to accept that he, even though he is world famous, too makes mistakes and is still learning and willing to change. It is basically the heart of the man.</span>
<span class="ev_code_PURPLE">He decided that while bridleless riding maybe cool, that horses end up frustrated due to all the cues... and doesn't promote it as much anymore...</span>~*Ride Far*~Ride Well~*~ The Sky's the Limit~

Didn't he also change his dealing with biters? If I recall I read something recently that while he used to have his "3 second rule" he now promotes more the idea of over annoying the horses mouth so he just doesn't want to put his little chomper on you anymore.
I think it is great that these and other good trainers are always looking to improve how they do and teach things.

<span class="ev_code_PURPLE">LMH, I was just re-reading the "why do I like JL" question and response...</span><span class="ev_code_BLUE">And I realized that really part of my answer should have been that I really don't and never have totally followed and advocated one trainer...or method of training. I like to learn from all different types of disciplines. When I grew up showing in Ohio, I had came from kind of 'fresh off the farm' horse loving girl into a world of VERY separate disciplines.</span>
I was so happy and excited to see all the different things people did with their horses...
only to find out the Western Pleasure people did not talk to the English People or to anyone else for that matter, especially the halter people to the barrel racers...yikes..
Well, I didn't know that, didn't understand it and never have accepted it. I talked to whoever talked to me, and over the next six years I think myself and my friends started to knock down a few walls, just because we came in late in the game, so to speak and didn't know any better. I don't know what that really has to do with PNH, maybe I just don't like 'exclusive' things, and maybe in the PNH people I know, I see it. And I know that it is not all PNH... just the ones I know...but the LP comments against dressage, Trakehners, ect.. are very much like the anti-_______ (fill in the blank, WP,H/J...) that I first saw in 4-H.
Maybe I am too versatile...?? Don't mean to offend anyone, sorry to ramble.~*Ride Far*~Ride Well~*~ The Sky's the Limit~

For the original poster:
I am not a disciple of anyone (unless you count GM). I can see good ideas in many non-conventional forms of training. I agree with the one poster (Other?) who went out to the midwest and was exposed to western horses and the emphasis on ground training *some* of them have. I, too, am a fan of ground training and I did grow up riding western horses. If it doesn't respect my space, I'm not ready to ride it. If it doesn't stand tied, I'm not ready to ride it. If it doesn't pick up its feet, I'm not ready to ride it. I don't believe in 90 day wonders. I don't believe (you name the clinician) can work my horse for a clinic session and get rid of a bad habit. I don't believe in any training method that incorporates equipment I couldn't buy at my tack shop before whomever they are got to be famous.
I read several people, John Lyons is one, and I incorporate some of his methods. They work with different horses in different situations, it's like having a tool box and putting various tools in it. The only exposure I have to Parelli is RFDTV and the day I watched, they were trying to get a horse to respect your space by having him on 10 feet of a 30 ft lunge line and waving a stick at him. This didn't make much sense to me, but the real thing I noticed was that other 20 ft of lunge was under both the horse and the handler's feet. DANGER, WILL ROBINSON, DANGER. I won't watch that again, I think that session was quite negligent on a real safety issue.
The only other person I have been around that incorporated marketed NH was the owner of a horse farm where I worked exactly one day. Her horses would NOT stay out of my space. They were Appaloosas, which I have NOTHING against, but she knew I'd worked with TBs and she said that I'd feel on vacation after that. NOT with them walking over me. And it started raining, so I changed into wind pants to stay dry, which swished when I walked. Spooked some of them, but by jingo, they were calmer than the TBs I've been around that are oblivious to my wind pants in the rain. She was a fruitcake. I'm not saying all NH people are, but she was. She was not a good example of it to me. Parelli's show wasn't a good example, and I take exception because that was a very basic thing that the lowest level Pony Clubber or 4H member would know not to do. I know I can't remember learning when that was dangerous. I just know it IS.Freaky Farm Hermit Clique

OK T2000 I decided today was the day to do the PNH ear pinning challenge.
I bundled up, marched to the barn and gathered Milo-my L2 guinea pig.
I did several L2 online tasks.
I did tasks he knew-but did them slower with less energy and faster with more.
I did tasks he recently learned but asked for more precision.
I introduced new tasks he had never done.
I was the official PNH carrot stick carrying cult member.
I rode him at his level-again doing old and new tasks.
Not one ear pin. Not one tail swish. He was happy looking, pleasant and full of play.
(please read with the twinkle teasing tone I am intending
)
Seriously I posted the ear pinning question/observation to 2 PNH BBs and this doesn't seem to be a common problem.
I have 2 thoughts-1) many people that are beginners are not too savvy with reading body language and nag the horse to irritation
2) the horses used in the tours are often "local problem horses" and already have issues.
I am not denying you haven't seen it-just doesn't seem to be an across the board PNH issue. Ah well....
