Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.
Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Can I ask, in all seriousness, what's with the motorcycles on the weekend? I'm not trying to be snobby - most of those folks look like nice people, but what is the point of coming to a quiet town and riding a loud vehicle, in head-to-toe leather? Is it just to make people mad and stare at them?
[This message was edited by Go-Go on May. 06, 2004 at 03:55 PM.]<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>Same things we are doing. Getting out, enjoying the good weather and the scenery, then stopping for a sociable meal.
They are no more "trying to make people mad" by riding loud bikes and wearing leather, than we are by riding horses that leave manure at the side of the road, and wearing helmets.
Leathers are a important piece of safety equipment, I cringe when I see someone riding a motorcycle WITHOUT leathers, the same way I cringe when I see someone riding a horse without a helmet.
Bikes happen to be loud, the same way horses happen to deposit manure. It is part of what they are, but not the REASON we ride them.

That's what I was going to guess--I used to get caught in that mess on my commute from College Heights to the office park off 17 that was home to the magazine that employed me at the time. That bridge is a cluster&%$# during rush hour.
I also wondered whether the 5:02 bridge might the overpass (Rt. 3) crossing I-95. Don't know.

so it IS the same place, right? So sad--it was a great building. I remember buying a shirt that said "Decadance:A way of life"...what was I thinking, I worked in a barn, and ate yogurt pretty much three times a day.
Gee...Falmouth, I haven't thought of that for years either-I had lived in Quantico from 68-74, and didn't live in M'burg until 82. It was a great apartment above there--two bedrooms, great living room, and if I remember the swimming pool was right down the road--as was the Red Fox across the way too. My memory is fuzzy. Loud music is pretty much what I remember most.

"And don't forget the old radio store"
You'll be happy to know that the Magic Wardrobe (children's clothing)has returned to Middleburg and now resides where Hockman's used to be.
I forget who first mentioned the Piedmont Gourmet situation, but Mrs. Johnson does not own the building where the store used to be. Piedmont Gourmet moved bc rent was going up while the landlord did not want to make improvements on the location. The store also lost money when Hurricane Isabel hit and power was out for several days. All the perishables were lost. You can still get basically everything you used to be able to get at Piedmont Gourmet with the exception of the fresh seafood, coffees and some other perishables. Do I miss it? You bet. But frankly, it's better that the store moved instead of going out of business.

Janet - I wasn't trying to make anyone mad - I hope I didn't offend. My dad had a motorcycle when I was little and I loved going for rides on it with him, so I appreciate the culture - I just don't understand why they have to be so darned loud. A friend of mine just bought some sort of motorcycle and had it made louder with a special muffler - I couldn't believe how inconsiderate that act is - he's normally a very thoughtful person, as are most of the other riders I've met. He said it's possible to have a quiet motorcycle, but he doesn't like it. Disappointing, to say the least! I'm glad to know that the leather is a safety precaution - I hadn't really thought of it at all other than to think that it must be hot as Hades in there, and it looks kind of silly, but I suppose they think the same thing as they whiz by me and my horse - probably with the same reaction - indifference (except I'm indifferent and halfway to Kansas because the bike has scared the bejesus out of my horse...)

LGW, this area does have a behind the times mentality on preservation (as do many areas), but at least they've done something. Seriously, I think it's better than flattening the whole downtown. Really. And there are a lot of people out there who would be just as happy to do that.
Places like Charleston, SC have done a fantastic job with preservation. BUT - they have been doing it since the '40s & earlier. It makes a BIG difference. F'burg City would do well to look at examples like that.
I don't think it helps that we're so big on citizen rights in VA (er - don't know how to phrase it). There is a pretty popular feeling that preservation efforts trample on the property rights & the right to life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness. For me, the rights of private property owners *sometimes* fall second to quality of life issues & preservation (of history, landscape, etc.) that effect the public at large, whether or not they realize it.
Re: Falmouth Bridge - my boyfriend's room mate proposed to his girlfriend & when she said 'no', he got wasted, walked down to that bridge & tossed the 3/4 carat engagement ring over the side.
He wasn't too happy when he woke up the next morning & realized what he had done & how much $$$ he had dumped into the Rappahanock.

But for Pete's sake, you have to stop calling Fredericksburg, F-burg City. Call it Dead Fred instead ... it definitely isn't a city.
<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
By the same token there's nothing wrong with being SNOB, either.
And Fred is by no means dead. The problems cited in this thread indicate that Fred's growth spurt is its (his?) biggest problem.

My mom is on the board of several preservation organizations in Charleston. I'll tell her y'all said nice things - it will make her day!
Edited to say: Winsdor, thanks a lot, now I'm hungry for SNOB cooking!

What's there not nice to say about CHARLESTON?
Incredible history, incredible architecture, and the ocean. After living in Summerville for three years and memorizing large chunks of The Lords of Discipline I have at least a mild infatuation with Charleston and a small collection of books about Charleston and the Lowcountry, including a signed copy of Jonathan Poston's The Buildings of Charleston, which I thought the Historic Charleston Foundation had some hand in the production of, but I'm not certain. Nice run-on sentence. Tell your mom to keep up the good work!
P.S. I've never been to Slightly North of Broad, but I know it's pretty much a Charleston icon now.

I'll take Beaufort over Charleston.

You have good taste. I visited Beaufort for the first time about three years ago. I bought several signed Pat Conroy books at the Bay Street Trading Company (did I get that name right?) and took the bridge over to St. Helena and Lady's Island and Hunting Island State Park. Beaufort is charming. I'm not sure I'd choose it over Charleston, but it is charming.

Thanks, Windsor - your kind remarks will make a wonderful Mother's Day gift to a very hardworking and devoted mom!
I'm sure you'll get to SNOB at some point - it will be worth the wait when you do!
And Duffy - I agree with you about Beaufort, too - we vacation on Hunting Island - but SHHHH! Don't tell everyone!

Six degrees of seperation continues! Sad to report the Stephens Hardware on the main street of Beaufort is closed. I am a St. Helena's bride. Every one in my husband's family has been confirmed or married or buried in the backyard of that church. When it came to have the wedding in Fredericksburg or Beaufort, there was no choice. I am worried about the development of lowcountry, too.

Ahhh - but then it was the fresh seafood (they carried dry-pack unprocessed scallops which are nearly impossible to find around here), the coffees, & the other perishables that I shopped there for in the first place. Everything else they carried I could get elsewhere for less.
And I'm sorry - guess I wasn't clear on why I said that Sheila Johnson was "involved" with their downsizing. I didn't mean that it was because she owned the building, rather meant that the opening of her own larger & more impressive gourmet shop may have provided too much local competition.
My body is a temple - unfortunately, it's a "fixer-upper".
