Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

    WHOA folks!!!!

Thanks to everyone who jumped to my defense. I am not offended by any of the replies from any posters. Not even the poster who said that s/he hopes someone culls the "herd" to which I belong. Though I find that statement kind of out of character for a person who is so unwavering in their belief that all horses should be saved. But, I respect that posters right to his/her opinion. Therefore no apology is necessary or expected.

Horse abuse, rescue, adoption and rehabilitation is obviously a very emotional issue to many posters on this BB.

I had questions about the policies and proceedures for supporting this particular rescue operation. And an opinion on how to make the limited resources go further. Those people primarily involved answered my posts with very professional, non confrontational, information and explainations.

I wish all those directly involved much success and I hope that the support offered finds it's way to good use.

    Regards
    Rocky

Thankyou, everyone, who has made a donation for the girls. One of our previous adopters was out yesterday, and will apply to adopt the baby in the group. We haven't gotten close enough yet, to see how old she really is, but is either a weanling, or a very slowly developed yearling. She's so hairy, it's hard to tell! #29 will be staying with me.
For anyone who wants to come out and volunteer, you're more than welcome, but there's really not a lot to do, at this stage. Mostly, its a matter of going out among them, and standing quietly, beside them until they let you get close enough to put a hand on a shoulder, and give them a nice scratch. It's time consuming, requires a great deal of patience, and you often go in feeling yo've acconplished abloutely nothing. But, it's that time you spend that is the most important. It's especially important, not to walk up to their heads and try to put a halter on, because it frightens them, and we don't want to start them running. So, basically, it's a morning or an afternoon, spent standing in a cold small paddock, just hanging about with them. Dress warmly, there's always a wind, and of course, winter's back, there's a lot of snow again.
Hot chocolate and cookies for afters, though! And everyone here has a story, even the dogs and cats.

Thanks again, everyone, for all your good thoughts and generosity. Film will be developed, today.

        DL, I have a question...

Were these mares used in the PMU program? If so, I would have thought that they had been extensively handled, since PMU mares are kept in standing stalls wearing all that collection equipment.

I'm sort of confused that most of them are not approachable.

What's the best way to help you? I don't want to cause you to pay VAT or duty or taxes on anything I donate... That would complicate your life tax-wise.

Bless you for your BIG heart!

These mares were definitely used on the pee lines. The way this farmer did it, was to run them into the barn in the fall, and slot them into stalls. Then, he tie a rope around their necks, which explains why a lot of them have rub marks all the way around the base of their necks, and just close up the stalls, behind. That way, you save yourself lot of money on halters.

We asked him how he had been treating #29's serious leg injury, and he told us it "must have happened on the trailer, he didn't see anything wrong with ay of them".

The vet says its at least several weeks old, and there was way too much infection and proudflesh, for it to have happened on Tuesday, or Wednesday.

And if he thinks there's nothing wrong with their skeletal condition, then I hope he never has horses, or any other animal, ever again.

As for shipping things across the border, again, I have no idea what it involves, because I've never experienced it. So, it's all experimental. But, with 17 more pregnant mares, and 1 weanling, we can use all the help we can get.
One of my adopters brought some beat pulp, yesterday. I soaked some overnight, and offered it to them, a few came over to check it out, but they don't quite know what to make of it. When they saw one of my horses eat it, two of them tried it. one spit it out, the other ate some. We'll try again, later.
Same results with sweet feed, corn, and oats. But they've already eaten 3 small blocks of salt.

oakleigh, it is ok, great wonderful to send things to DL - I am sorry if my posts scared anyone off from doing that - just mark the customs sticker GIFT, horse equipment, secondhand used horse equipment, (something like that) and don't put a value of full retail.. so for example, if it is a used leather halter, don't put a value of $100 where it says Value? put something like $10.. if you put "no value" or $0, that upsets them. They don't seem to really care otherwise... but they want to collect revenue from people mailorder shopping at Dover, Martha Stewart, LandsEnd etc, .. but if the article is used, a GIFT, and not overly valuable, they don't care. so DL will not have to pay any duty or taxes.
Again, I apologise if my OCD caused anyone to hesitate to send DL any and all things you can spare!

afrikando or others. I tried to send some support via Paypal and they didn't have DL's e-mail address as an established account. The message said they would contact her to set up an account. Is that how you did it or is there some other way?

I was treated to lunch, today! What a nice surprise! I called my friend whose husband passed away recently, and took her with me to get my film developed. She's the one who needed homes for her two clydesdales, because she's sold the farm, and can't keep them anymore. One of their horses is on my website.
So, we Swiss Chalet'ed for lunch, her treat! I have the best friends.

The first roll of film has been developed, I got some decent shots, and on Monday, I'm sending them to my web designer lady, who does an awesome job for me. We'll add a page for the pmu mares, and you can have a look at them on my site. I got a great shot of #29's nasty leg wound. Now that it's been cleaned up, it looks better, but it will take some time to heal. I have halters on two of them, and a couple others have let me give them a pat. The weanling is the most pathetic looking thing I've seen in a long time. Poor thing, just a few months old, but already branded with numbers along her spine. Heaven forbid you should know any of your horses by name.

It's really cold and windy, and it's been snowing all day. they're huddled in a group, but they won't go into their shelter.

Thankyou. Don't forget all the generous people who are making donations, too. It makes this venture a lot easier. I just found out that there's another farmer, related to our farmer, who is losing his contract sometime in June. So I have to start saving my pennies. Although Wyeth has said that they help with shipping, Wally the shipper is still waiting to be paid for 2 trips he made with a full truck to Ohio, in Nov. Wyeth did pay him 10%. so they still owe him several thousand $$$$. This is why we pay our own shipping. ( the horses he took to ohio were from different farms, and not purchased by rescue groups.)

It's still snowing, but the girls are all out, by their round bales, eating. They never stop eating. Except to sleep. I have two water tubs out for them but they barely look at them, they nibble on snow, and then eat some more. It's interesting, they know the water's there, they drink it, too, but it's like it's too much trouble to walk over. They won't leave the hay.

Not only for those moments you will remember (the twitch of an ear, the softening of an eye, a nostril not as flared as the last time you approached), but also for each moment the mares experience true kindness, caring and validation that who they are DOES matter!! Each and every breath they take, mouthful of hay, sound of your voice, look of love from your tearing eyes tells them.

I haven't followed this whole story, so I may be way off in my assumption here, but based on what is written above, the mares are an Equine Advocates rescue and not something you are doing as an individual. Is that correct?

IF it is correct, it is most definitely in everyone's best interest, including your own, to have monetary donations sent through the organization. Even though you are likely completely honest about what the money is being used for (please don't think I'm alluding to anything contrary), even just the slightest possibility of impropriety should be completely avoided by asking that $$$ donations are sent directly to the organization, so that the donations are "on the books". Consult your CPA on this (or the organization's CPA, that is). Do this for your own protection as well as the protection of the organization. If it even *looks* like you are profiting from your association with a non-profit, it could mean landing in a huge steaming pile of legal poo for the organization (up to and including revocation of the non-profit status). Having the donations made out to you personally is a huge no-no in a legal sense.

Even if you are doing nothing wrong morally (all money is going to the mares), you must always take great caution not to even give anyone the slightest indication to even hint at the most minor impropriety.

If this is something that you are doing privately as an individual, well then, it's up to you & anyone who wants to donate as to how you want to handle things.

Equine Advocates and I work together in our rescue efforts with the mares. They raise money to buy and ship the mares, and find the adoptive homes. I take the mares in, foster, feed, and work with them. I do all of that at my own expense, although E.A, does pay what they can for hay. This is the third time, in three years, that we're doing this, and so far, there have been no problems. The main issue, of course, is to help the horses. We raise funds for them, any way we can. If we were talking thousands of dollars coming to me directly, it might be a bit different, but so far, we haven't quite reached $500. And with hay the price it is, you can be pretty sure that that is where it's all going.
Other rescue efforts, like my five ponies, I do on my own. E.A. isn't involved with those ones. the difference with those ones, is that if i take in a rescue, I can rehab them, and sell them, to an approved home, and recoupe some of my expenses. The mares are not for sale, and are available for adoption, only.

And for everyone that has made donations, don't think that it doesn't make a difference. It does, every single penny counts, and helps to feed these girls. I can't stress enough how grateful we are, that you've taken the time, and trouble to send anything you're able to.

                                        • dancing lawn, if Equine Advocates is the legal owner of these horses, I strongly urge you to have them check with their CPA about this. It doesn't matter if it's $20 or $20,000.

I don't say this to hurt you or your cause, but to help. I have non-profit experience, and I'm tellin' ya, this is a HUGE no-no if those horses are owned by Equine Advocates and you are a volunteer (foster home) for Equine Advocates. It really doesn't matter that you aren't mis-using the funds - it's a matter of "the books" and the *appearance* of the possibility of an individual to "profit" from their association with a non-profit. This is the holy grail of non-profit status.

If they are your horses, and Equine Advocates is donating to you, that might be a different story. But they appear to be advertised on their website as Equine Advocate's mares, and adoption is through them (if those are the same mares).

Like I said, I'm not trying to hurt your cause, but to help it.

Edited to add - if nothing else, have EA consult their CPA. It couldn't hurt and could very well prevent a huge mess.
