Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

  • lol I don't know Oldenburg Mom- I have been listening to the same Audioslave song for 3 days now. Everytime I get in the car. The whole time I'm in the car.
Maybe it is a Virginia thing?

Murphy's Mom- I take pictures of MY injuries, usually on my cell phone so I can send them to my friends who know how accident prone I am. I crashed a mini dirt bike through a fence, luckily my face took the brunt of the fall rather than the bike, and I have pics of it. Sick, I know.

I am an ENTP - and female which apparently is odd. I think NF's may have an advanatage with horses due to intuitive feeling.

          Ok. Here goes ... <gulp>

I can listen to the same music over and over and over again for hours. The same music... I've had the same Mozart sonata in my computer for almost two months (and I'm listening to it as I type.)

I listened to Mozart's complete piano concertos while at work for over a year.

Eventually, I'll get sick of it ... ... and never play it again.

Whoops. Sorry Samantha37, ... you've got the same illness, although I warrant, probably not as bad.

In the car, I have Percy Grainger's most well known ... and I've had it in there for a minimum of 6-months.

I'm an INTJ—I had to do the MB thing for my current job. Never heard of it before ...
Not only am I also an INTJ (heavy on the I, T & J... straddling the fence on the N) ... but I also listen to the same thing over and over and over again for MONTHS at a time. Not days. Not weeks. MONTHS. Drives other people nuts if they're going for long drives with me. Particularly if I'm on an odd music kick... like Armenian Folk Music. That never did go over well with my fellow travellers.

and when I am done... I it's extremely rare that I will listen to it again.

          • I can't believe I just read this whole thread, but I discovered that I posted on it originally! I was a...freshman in college then? Some of what I said before still stands:

-I still have very little hair on the right side of my head...same when I was 19, fortunately it's not any worse now. You can't tell unless I specifically make you investigate.

            Anyways, once again:

-I'm so utterly jealous of those of you who have ever gotten to travel the show circuit! I'm 23, and still have an extreme desire to forgo the job world and go join the circus that is horse showing. I'm also totally jealous of those of you who got to horse show in what you tend to refer to as the "golden days," over outside courses with hunt caps and rust britches.

-I have an extra bone in both of my feet that slightly protrudes. It gets knocked on stuff ALL the time and OUCH! It's sort of like another funnybone. It's not uncommon in my family.

-6 months ago, I could only speak English. These days, I'm attempting tri-fluency: English, Spanish, and an indigenous Mayan language Kaqchikel.

-My iTunes could not possibly be more random: it will shuffle from Motley Crue to Whitney Houston to Phish to Bob Dylan. I like to say that I simply appreciate good music, despite the genre. That said, I strongly dislike "pop" country.

-I've only ridden twice in the last 5 months, and I'm starting to get kind of stir-crazy. I'm in the process of horse shopping (sort of), but I have to find somewhere to keep it first; it's not like there are barns of any kind. I'm rather looking forward to riding my hony bareback with a homemade hackamore and handwoven saddle blanket whilst carrying my machete through the highlands of Guatemala.

-I don't give two hoots about which way the toilet paper rolls...I don't even have a toilet paper roller, but then again these days I don't have a flushing toilet. Appreciate yours.

-I used to be one of the EXTREME needle-phobes, but one dark and stormy day I decided to donate blood. I've been fine with needles ever since. Same thing with coffee - I hated it for 23 years, until I magically woke up one morning desiring a cup of black coffee. Have coffee probably 6 days a week now.

-I have every issue of Practical Horseman since 1994 (pretty much when i started riding seriously), and will NOT get rid of them. Every year or so, I go through them and re-discover stuff that I didn't understand or appreciate before.

This is a seriously nutty and bizarre group of people!

One of my favorite places in the world is the Chernobyl exclusion zone. I've been there about 25 times.

                I hate crowds.

My dad survived the worst of Stalin's gulags.

I've worn glasses since the second grade.

                I went through a windshield when I was 18.

I know a president but I know his wife better. Neither of them are the brightest bulbs.

When my parents took 5 yo brother and 3 yo me for our first pony ride, he cried and I smiled.

I adore tomatoes but hate, hate, hate real tomatoes on pizza.

                • OM, right there with you!

I haven't updated my iPod in a long, long time, but, damn, I loff what I've got on it. My favorite group is the Rippingtons and I listen to their stuff over and over and over ad infinitum. I never get tired of it. And, yes, I do recognize that there's a lot of really good music to listen to and I eventually get around to it. At Christmastime I will listen to The Messiah constantly, with some interjection of Streisand's Christmas Album and Mel Torme.
It just makes me feel good.

Don't too feel bad- I often put albums on repeat. Right now it's a three-way tie between Bob Dylan, Radiohead, and The Beatles.

I can cross just one of my eyes

I am terrified of dinosaurs. Partly due to watching Jurassic Park when I was 5 and partly from being attacked by my high schools raptor kid in the hallway.

                      I love bats.

I hate cornbread and collard greens much to the dismay of my very southern family. Thank goodness I LOVE chicken or else I might be disowned.

                      • I have a really sensitive gag reflex. Sometimes just putting toothpaste on my toothbrush sets it off. I can't keep toothpaste in a travel kit and use it every few months when I go somewhere, because the dried/crusty end will make me toss my cookies. So I have to bring my home toothpaste so I know it's "fresh".

I love the smell of skunk.

I like to travel in a circle and hate to go somewhere and come back home via the same route.

I broke my finger in the air (i.e. no impact with anything). I was in college, cramming for finals. I swatted at my cat who had just stolen the meat out of my dinner sandwich. Didn't connect with the cat -- I would have been better off if I had! The angle and speed of my swat caused a spiral fracture of my finger.

I had one horse from 1986 through 2002. From 2003 to 2009 I have had 20 more, and still have 11. Can you say midlife crisis?

I'm including you too Samantha37, Foundation mare, and Pony person ... but FM and PP, I don't know if you're quite a bad as Sam, Deuce and myself. • I've never eaten a 'White Castle' hamburger, and plan on going to my grave a W.C. virgin.

I love bats too!! We just had to shoo one out of our screened-in porch - he/she was waay up in the rafters, and I worried that he/she'd die up there!

I think clowns are creepy, but like clowns in parades.

I can't spell worth a darn, but love to do crossword puzzles. I have to do them in pencil - have never done one with a pen - and the pencil has to be really sharp. I'll get up and re-sharpen the pencil several times during the course of doing one crossword puzzle.

                                I had 6 wisdom teeth.

I have cysts on my liver, and I only know this because they showed up on an X-ray taken when I had a kidney stone attack. Apparently liver cysts are pretty common.

I have a 'wild hair' that keeps growing on the inside of my right wrist - I keep pulling it out, but it keeps coming back.

I have all the books in my library alphabetized. I read voraciously, but don't always remember the books I read, unless they're really good ones. I tend to re-buy the same book as a result...and found that alphabetizing them helps.

I carried a salamander in my pocket as a kid. I think it died.

I'm the only one in my family who loves horses - and I'm talking, several generations of family.

Cats 'find' me. In the last year alone, 3 have wandered onto my property and velcro onto me like we're long-lost-friends.

I was painfully shy as a kid, but now you can't shut me up.

I used to like to drive really, really fast - especially at night.

                                I hate milk.

I can't do any stupid human tricks - except for being able to gobble like a turkey. I don't get many requests for that.
