Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

      - I was born with the muscles in my eyes loose, and they never developed to their ideal point. So when I looked around a corner, my eyes would cross. I had to get this surgically corrected.

      - My depth perception is incredible for close-up objects. Far away (as in, heading to a jump) it is non-existant. This is probably a side effect of #1.

      - I was dropped on my head as a child, and have the lumps to prove it. They make it very difficult to find a helmet that fits.

      - I can touch my tongue to the tip of my nose.

I too had surgery as a kid for lazy eye- therefore have no depth perception at all. When asked how I jump, I say..."I don't jump, they do!" However, I am terrified of escalators (sp)!
Then just last year, I started to see double all the time, no matter what. If you meet me, look at the glasses and check out my left lens....its got lines all over it! Hopefully, at some point, I won't see double, but think I'd better get used to it! No good cure in sight (sorry for my sad pun!)

This is a great topic!! Some of these are hilarious!

Mr. A and I got called by the Dr Phil show about our story with our foster sons. They want us to come to Hollywood next month to tape a show.

I'm afraid of things I can't see but can only hear in the woods. Gives me the creeps.

I brush my teeth with warm water.

Sometimes I can go for 2 days and not take a bath. Don't worry, I'll bathe before we go on the Dr. Phil Show.

            Okay, I'll bite...

            - Not including fingers and toes, I've had 11 broken bones. Only 5 of them are horse-related.

            - Ants completely freak me out when they get indoors. Not a fan of bees or wasps either.

            - My tendency to answer a question with a question really annoys people. (What can I say? I'm an engineer. It's what we do.)

            - I can bray like a mule.

I have some more that my wonderful husband reminded me of. Thought they may get a laugh or 2.

-I really can touch my elbows behind my back.

-I have proven that it isn't impossible to lick your elbow, you just have to dislocate it first.

-I can dislocate every single ball/socket joint on my entire body.

-I love swimming, but am terrified of the ocean.

-My son has the whole slightly lazy eye thing going on, and I think he's able to watch 2 things at the same time.

-I shamed my dog by buying him a hunter green weatherbeeta blanket. I should have known he only likes blue.

-I'm only 20 years old, but have many grey hairs. Dyejob, here I come!

-I once helped 20 summer campers kidnap an annoying co-counselor, hog tie her, throw her in a wheelbarrow, dump her in the water trough and then roll her in manure.

-I accidently stabbed my sister in the butt with a pitchfork once. She then "accidently" smacked me with the lunge whip

-I had plastic surgery when I was 5 years old, on my forehead so that I would have the least visible scar possible after breaking my head open.

-If I am in a bad mood or feeling down, I can make a batch of brownies and with the help of my roomate, we can finish them off in one night (don't worry we dont do it that often!)

-I am the eldest of 7 children. Two of whom my parents adopted when they were 5 and 3 because their father killed their mother. They were our good friends before the tragedy happened.

-I love anything and everything that is banana or rasberry flavored. The best? A raspberry/banana smoothie !

-I still ride my horse bareback and barefooted in the summer

I can crack my ears, and jaw and make popping sounds with my eyes,
When I smile you can hear it as my mouth makes a weird snapping sound. It is not unusual to have a fight with the DH end when he says, "I heard you smile"

I can make my tongue lay flat while it is upside-down in my mouth

I have one rib that bends into my abdomen. If I laugh to the point I double over it will get hooked on some internal thing and really give it a good tug when I try to straighten up.

In collage I was convinced I had a tooth growing just bellow my temple. I actually went to the doctor about it. He laughed till tears were rolling town his face but I was still convinced for a few more months.

My right eye has 90:20 vision (practically blind) but I see motion way better than other people. Also my hearing is ridiculously sensitive. I can be kept awake by a dripping tap on the opposite side of the house

I am immune to bee stings but allergic to spider webs. I get hives if I walk into them.

I am allergic to ALL metal but white gold, titanium and platinum, my dentist actually had to order special instruments to work on me.

I sleep with the pillow on top of my head instead of underneath. It has to cover my forehead or I cannot relax. Sleeping in sox give me nightmares

I change my sox on average 4 times a day

I only fall off horses when they are standing still. I have stayed on for some truly incredible buck/jumps/spins while bareback but make me sit on a horse while it stands still and we enter the danger zone.

                    Here goes:

-I think I have had every possible shade of hair color, from platinum white, to red, to brown, to black, to purple once, on purpose...hey it was 1983.

-I have a habit of picking at the skin around the nails of my thumbs with my pointer finger, not nervous or anything...but have done it all my life, even in my sleep.

-The only green vegetable I eat is broccoli, no kind of salads at all.

-I like to drink dill pickle juice after the pickles are all gone.

-I have 2 toenails on each pinky toe, they split down the middle, my mom does too.

                    -Spiders are monsters.

-I have to smell everything before I eat it...doesn't smell like I will like it, then I won't eat it...I have heard "you are such a picky eater" all my life.

I'll ask my hubby and kids and I am sure they can come up with many more!

I am OCD about cleaning stalls. All the poop- even the little bits- have to be picked out, the wet spot shoveled up, the clean shavings then de-distributed totally evenly and then swept neatly from underneath the hay feeder and buckets.

I broke my shoulder blade getting dumped off of my crazy gray horse (fractured scapulas account for only 3% of all fractured bones, and most of those occur in motorcycle accidents- there is your random fact for the day!).

When I was little I had to have oral surgery to remove an extra tooth! Instead of having a baby incisor and then my adult incisor inline waiting to grow in, I had an intermediate tooth waiting in line!

I am deathly afraid of frogs and toads. Especially toads. If one ever touched me I would have a heart attack on the spot. The mere thought of one touching me sends me into an anxiety attack (getting one right now just typing about it!!). A friend who was unaware of this little problem threw one at me one summer night while we were putt-putting and I fell into the dyed blue river-look a like- water hazard on the putt-putt course trying to get away from the airborne amphibian. It didn't hit me, thank goodness.

I've had dermoid cysts on my ovaries twice, and had to have surgery both times to remove them (the most recent being just a week ago). My doctor told me she'd never heard of anyone getting them more than once. Go me.

I got kicked in the stomach by a horse when I was 4. I'd gone along with my Dad to a car dealership and as some whacky promotion they had a horse up for raffle. He was talking to a salesman and I wandered off to pet the business end of the horse who then kicked me! I was scared that I would get in trouble so I hid behind a car so my Dad wouldn't see my crying and ask why! We didn't win the raffle...

I can only smell with my right nostril, not my left.

I am so blind without contacts or glasses that I have to put everything in the exact same place at night so that I can find it sans glasses.

I am so paranoid about earthquakes that I have my purse next to my bed at night, shoes next to it, keys at the top of the purse so I can flee if necessary.

One of my great uncles in Holland was legally euthanized when he was terminal and fed up with the thought of living another two weeks, in pain and unable to sit up or lie down. I was all for him doing it (please, no insane PTs about this).

My cousin was murdered by her husband. Thanks to the Dutch legal system, he got only three years for what Jack McCoy would have thought deserved the needle.

My right big toenail is smaller than the left one, thanks to Willem stepping on my right foot and pivoting the nail right out as he stepped off. It did grow back smooth though.

These are hilarious. I never knew so many people had weird traits just like me! Great topic! Here's some other ones

-My family has a strange genetic trait. My sister, my mom, and my uncle have webbing between there big and index toes. Duck-feet! Don't need flippers in the pool!

-Once when I was angry, I told a friend that my husband pissed me off. She told me to grind up glass into powder and put it into his food...that when he dies the autopsy will show that he died of severe stomach ulcers. Needless to say it freaked me out............

-I can do the best whinny impression you've ever heard.

-I slept inside a bar in Toronto once. Apparently I passed out underneath the pool table and no one noticed. They found me the next morning.

-I am DEATHLY afraid of flying.

-When I was 12 I decided I wanted to be a horseback vaulter, so I got on my pony and stood on her back. Fell off, landed right on my back, and thought I was paralyzed.

-I was ponysitting 2 years ago when my husband accidently let go of the pony on our way to the paddock. Took 2 days to find him on 33 acres of woods.

I went to a Rush concert with my bro once; I wanted to see Pat Travers, the opening act, and he wanted to see Rush. We were in the 12th row and I slept the entire way through Rush.

Did an encore performance when I fell asleep during Eric Clapton at Dodger Stadium.

I have two webbed toes on each foot too--even before all the rain.

I can gain five pounds overnight.

Including the horses, I have 19 pets.

I've had a lifelong crush on one of my cousins.

I really believe I was mixed up at the hospital nursery.

Another cousin mysteriously disappeared in Texas 12 years ago. Authorities in Washington state discovered his body three days following his disappearance, but didn't get the news out until this year. He was reported as the victim of a hit and run with all his major bones broken. Isn't that creepy? The rest of us cousins think his wife had something to do with it.

                                        What are Bananas Foster??? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

I am not sure how to explain it, but my friend is a chef, adn I know it involves Bananas and flames... and alcohol. It is very tastey. Oh, and do you want my addy so you can send me some of those delicious muffins?

EBO, I have webbed toes as well, and people make fun of them all of the time when I were sandles. So, I wear my sandles anyway. It is my second and third toes on each foot. You can see how much it bothers me as I forgot to mention them on this thread.
