Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    Ooh, I like this idea!

I think an on-line classified forum would be great! There are many people here who are looking for horses and those that are selling. I personally would pay to be able to put a thread out there that said I was horse hunting and be able toget immediate feedback.

For what it's worth-you will never get everyone to agree on one thing. We all love this BB and would hate to see it shut down. I'm sure most people are willing to make a concession to prevent that.

I wouldn't mind a pay to post pictures policy (how's that for alliteration). To be honest, there are some photo threads I love, and there are others I don't open (mostly because I have a dial up at home and the larger photos just take too long to download).

I love the Maddie photos, the COTH get-together photos, lauriep's "traveling with the team photos, and the "photos of you riding before the Reagan years" type photos. The cute critters photos can be fun (and sometimes I open them) but mostly they take too long to download.

I don't think I've posted photos in over a year, but if the fee weren't too large, I wouldn't mind paying it if I had some photos in the future I wanted to post. Or I could just link to a Webshots site or something similar.

Question that I don't think was covered:

Does the e-mail notification count towards the bandwidth used? As in, when I ask for immediate e-mail notification on a topic or on someone specific (like Willem!). Do those e-mails count when tallying bandwidth?

            Defintely hats and polos!

Also, I think the paying for posting pictures idea is a good one, but I also think even without going to premiums and whatnot we can slow down the amount of pictures flooding the system. Afterall, we are COTH, we do (sometimes) work together for a greater cause.

I like the one-picture crititque or one-picture "Snuffles and I went to the Grand Canyon and Snuffles thought he was a donkey!" or whatever, but when there are around 20 pictures all about the same thing I just pass by. Also the "Post your puddle-jumper pictures!" threads are a bit overwhelming. Everyone loves to share pictures, but I bet we can tone it down a bit just by not having huge amounts of photos that few look at.

No I don't like that idea, I am banned by family members from having a subscription to COTH, I'm a pack rat and they just add up way too quick, I still have boxes and boxes full of them from when I did subscribe. NOW I do advertise in COTH and pay for full page color ads, which equals a lot more revenue then a subscription does. So I think it would just be too much to decide who has subscribed, who's advertised, etc.

I agree with pintofoal. Besides, I know to some of you $50 doesn't sound like a lot of money, but, there are loads of us out here in horse land who have all of our money in our horses and honestly can't afford the COTH subscription price. The fee to post pics would be lower and more affordable, and those of us who have to really pinch pennies could always post a link.

                  This too, shall pass.

Or, here's an original thought....how about keeping posts HORSE related? Or how about no photos posted unless they're HORSE related?

Or how about limiting photos to x number per month? year? and make it a low number. Sometimes it seems like people upload their whole roll of film and uh, the pictures are not that interesting.

Probably the best way, really, is to just make people post a link to their photos. Then it's just not the COH's problem. There have been so many terrific photos posted here (the blasts from the past, the horse looking in the car, the example of terrific form over fences, etc.) I do hate to lose those. But tons of pictures of my house, my dog, my kitty,....arrrgh. Even some people here post constant photos of their horse and frankly, I think MAYBE 2 or 3 people want to see and it's just boring for the rest of us. Let's face it, our own horses are marvelous to us, but to other people...well, people really don't want to see endless everyday photos of my horse and I don't want to see endless everyday photos of yours. What's so wrong about asking people to link to their own sites for this?

I didn't read all the replies, so I'm sorry if this has already been suggested.

How about if subscribers to the print magazine were automatically premium BB members and nonsubscribers could pay the premium membership fee to post pics?

As a subscriber, I'll be a litte angry if I have to pay the same amount as a non subscriber.

i think you should charge extra to allow people to post links too, since they usually are free advertising for farms and trainers.

charging for photos is fine. go for it. many amount to advertising for trainers/farms as well.

i'd also suggest you consider taking online ads and charging for those.

if it's possible to monitor, you might consider charging people who make more than x number of posts a month. that would mean frequent posters would pay, and that would include me, but i wouldn't mind because i come here to practice writing skills and it's cheaper than a writing class; aside from that i would enjoy helping to support the chronicle.

I think it is true all across the bord that paying a small fee (10-30) would be within all of our grasps if we wanted "premium privelages."

As far as posting pics, I have no problem just posting a link to my website. I think most of us just use the Attachment because it's easier, but life wasn't meant to be easy so I think we can all handle uploading to our own servers and laying off COTH's bandwidth.

People have hit the truth about how this BB is one of the most informational on the internet..it's the one I visit first when I'm online! So anything to keep it going with the same essence it has now is fine by me..

I wouldn't have a problem paying a few dollars to be able to post photo's on the site. Actually I think it's a great idea because it still allows everyone the ability to visit and post at the BB for free. Ditto's to cutting the file size of the pics as well. I know I don't even bother clicking on any pics that are huge. In the country with only dial up available, it just takes too long.

The other thing it may stop - and this is something that bugs me everytime I see it - is people that post a picture here and place an ad on another BB that doesn't allow pics - such as EMG - and link to it. Nothing like using COTH's BW to advertise on another board. A lot of BW use is in viewing.

I don't agree with an across the board membership fee though. As discussed in that Pay Per View thread, some people just can't afford it and many wouldn't join without being able to try the place out and get a feel for it first.

The user name titles is also great. By the time I figured out what I wanted to have it was almost the end of December and since we were told that the titles were only for the month...

I also love the idea of classifieds, COTH hats and other COTH stuff (maybe a COTH online store?), forum appropriate banners and a COTH dating service.

                              Back to mucking out....

I LOFF this board and even though I probably wouldn't pay the pic fee (since I rarely post pics and have a free yahoo gallery) I would pay the extra $$ to have a title etc.

I would pay the $10 someone suggested if COTH ever went to PPP it is worth it for me--the way I look at it I have had 1600 some posts for FREE--thats a heckuva deal, and $10 or prices like that are cheap--and I am a poor college student!

I will support COTH all the way!

I agree with Robby in that a nominal fee could be charged to everyone, whether or not they post pics. Seems like that would be the fairest solution and possibly give COTH a nice income as well.

Hopefully, it would get rid of those using aliases as well as each userid would be charged.

Now, I do realize that this may be a problem for some of the juniors as they would probably need their parents to submit $ thru credit cards or PayPal, but then the parents should be aware of what their kids are doing anyway. JMHO

What about allowing photo posting but removing photos after, say, a week or some other short but not too short time period?

Either the COH can remove them or better yet, the poster MUST remove them or receive a warning (only ONE)to either remove them or be banned.

For instance, someone said they felt bad about posting tons of my house in the snow pics. Well, they could always simply remove them, right? That way we could post a funny pic, a fabulous pic, etc. but take it down after 3-5 days. It's given everyone a chance to see it and if they want to keep it they can download it on to their OWN space, right? And the discussion could continue. If someone comes in late I'm sure a request to the list will let someone email it to them privately.

For the smart alecks who remove pictures of Precious-poo after 3 days and then re-post them, the COH can no doubt deal with them in their no-nonsense way.

That would be me, but all the photos I posted where well under 50KB + they are mostly horse related, showing the big snow--I will remove them, but not for a few more days since I think the "snow" is a pretty big deal to us struggling though it + it's intresting for those who are not.

I think it's a good idea....the "Come look! I have 20 new pics of my pony standing around" and "Critique all these pics, even though I'm doing this, this and this wrong and won't take anyone's advice" threads are a bit ridiculous~ and it would help weed some of that out. I don't post pics all that often, so if I opted not to get a premier membership I like the option of linking to a photo site. I also think an online store might be a good idea: Ball caps, T-shirts, stuff like that to help offset the cost of maintaining the board. SUZ

There is a piece of information here that surprises me. Being a non computer person I did not realize that posting pictures took up so much BW. Having known that I would definitley only post the most important pictures instead of just freely posting a million pictures just for fun. In fact, I just posted a ton of pictures of minis. Had I known that it was costing COTH so much I would have only posted 1 or 2 instead of the large amount that I ended up posting.

Would it be possible for us all to agree to only post important pics or at least less pics of the same thing? Examples- If you want a critique just post your best pic instead of 3 or 4. If you have something cute to show just post 1 pic instead of 10, like I did, oops. and so on...

We could maybe try this for a month or so and see if it makes any difference. I think if everybody could just make an effort we might bring the cost down. I know I will certainly post less pictures after knowing this information. I feel really bad about how many pics I have been posting lately.

What do you think, would this help?
