Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Yes, the horse has had several owners. But maybe we should ask "WHY?" Could he be an incorrigible rear-er? A horse who bolts and runs away with his rider? There is something about this horse which makes people want to send him down the road. (Pun not intended...)

I do not think that he was just turned loose on the highway (if he was, they probably would not have left him there with a good leather halter and shank...) and there is something definitely fishy about this entire story.

But, it might also be interesting to know why several owners in a row had him for such a short time.

No flaming me here. I am NOT saying that he shouldn't have a good home. Every horse deserves a good home. What I am saying is that, just because he was found lose on the road (in good weight, with nicely pulled mane etc) does not mean that he is God's gift to horse-dom. Something he does has caused these people to want to get rid of him.

Before bidding $5,000 out of sentiment, I sure would want to know what it is.

                • Got this in my email this morning. Stretch does have someone who loves and wants him. I hope she can get him back. I know Cheryl Mendenhall, and this is a legitimate request.

Tonight is the auction for Stretch or Flying Algonquin (previously known as the LOST LAKE STEVENS HORSE) from the Marysville Auction. We are currently collecting pledge money for Erin Porter, the woman who cared for Stretch for a month at her home in Lake Stevens. I just found out yesterday that Erin would really love to buy this horse - and is worried that with all the publicity she will not be lucky enough to have the highest bid. Unfortunately, this is one of the down sides of all the publicity this horse has received, although decidedly there is not enough publicity about horses going to auction.

Erin provided a great home for Stretch, however, Animal Control took the horse from them because the law states that the horse must be sold at auction, since the legal owner was not willing (or able) to come forward, pay impound fees and reclaim the horse. (Please see the note below from Jess Rogalla for more details).

Two hours ago, Bonnie Davis (Snohomish County 4-H leader) posted a note pledging money to further strengthen Erin's auction power tomorrow. Since that time we have collected $200 in pledges and are hoping to help Erin give Stretch the home he deserves, with Erin, the woman who has already shown she can give the horse a great home.

We are soliciting pledges at this time and suggesting that you pass the word as quickly as possible as the auction is tomorrow!!!! Please email or call me with your pledge IMMEDIATELY.

If Erin posts the winning bid tomorrow - YOU WILL NEED TO SEND ME YOUR CHECK IMMEDIATELY - as she will need to pay for the auction tomorrow.

I will be home tomorrow - please feel free to call - or email any questions, comments, suggestions!

Thank you in advance for your generosity and support on Stretch and Erin's behalf.

                  note from Jess (2/1/04):
This is the latest on Stretch.

Most of you now know his history; how he was born in British Columbia, raced for 3 years and earned about $8,000 which wasn't enough to keep him racing. So the couple who bred and raced him sold him to a nice couple in Snohomish so the wife could turn him into a saddle horse. For whatever reasons, that didn't work out so they gave him to a lady for a good home (they
thought) well for whatever reason that lady also gave him away to a guy who no one has been able to find.

Fast forward to the night he was found, wandering with a chain wrapped all the way around his nose, bleeding from a gash on his nose and dragging a lead rope. Animal control officers catch him and after asking a local neighbor if they knew the horse, decided to leave him in Erin Porters pasture with anote
on her door since she wasn't home. Imagine Erin's suprise when she got home. If you know Erin you know she has a big heart and something in Stretch connected with her too. She lovingly cared for him for a month, bought a barn full of hay and grain, got him a blanket and its fun to hear her tell stories of gaining his trust enough to get him to put that blanket on, etc.

Fast forward again to her husband, resting on the sofa a month later after a root canal. Dogs barking bring him to the door in time to see Animal Control loading stretch into their trailer to haul him off to Marysville without so much as a "thanks alot" or "Mother may I?"

Well, some folks might be relived of the responsiblity. Obviously whoever localy lost Stretch that nite hasn't wanted to claim him either. But Erin is breaking her heart over this horse, worrying about where he will end up next and really really wants to keep him and give him that loving home that everyone thought he was getting several times, owners ago. The sad part is the city, and the law, says he has to go to auction! Too bad he wasn't a bag
of money or a diamond ring because after 30 days it would automatically belong to Erin. But the city and the auction house are the ones who will benefit on this go round. Too bad for Stretch who finally, after suffering the wisdom of humans, went and found his own person who loves him for what and who he is.

Tommorrow, when Erin bids what little they can afford after all they've already spent on Stretch, I will personally be very mad at whoever bids against her!!!!

Lets see if Erin can finally bring Stretch home. They both deserve a happy ending.

                  Best Wishes, Jess

                                      Hello All -

I just got off the phone with Steve Porter, husband of Erin - hopefully soon to be Stretch's new owners. Steve was so grateful to hear of all the efforts and pledges that people have made on their behalf. They are soon to leave to go to the Marysville Auction.

Good News - They have an existing PayPal account, that money can be sent to. The email address for their account is portersworld@hotmail.com. Steve also assures me that they have enough credit to cover their bids this afternoon - however, they will be very grateful for fast payment on your pledges. If you have a PayPal account, you will know how to send payment, if not go to http://paypal.com and follow the directions - OR - you can send them a check (I will post the address in the next email). Current pledges are $1185. The Porters have some money available from family and friends in addition to your pledges.

They will call me from the sale with the results of their bid - and I will get it to all of you ASAP.

Again, thank you everyone - what a wonderful community we belong to.
