Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I'm sorry, but the above post is difficult to follow at best. In a very serious matter that may save a person's life it's important to be articulate and specific.

Is it stating the obvious that if someone says "oh I just inherited money from my father's death" that this should, at the very least throw a huge red flag. If it doesn't smell right, it isn't!!! Ask for a resume, even if they are hiring you, check on them using google and never get in a stranger's car or let someone you don't know get in your car.

              Sick people are everywhere.

Edited to say I may sound a bit harsh, but things like this really scare the cr#@p out of me. How do you know he's wanted in S.C. and for what? What girl is with him? More concise info is needed if possible.

Ick, I can't believe this creep is from the Saratoga Springs I live near... I've warned all my horsey friends in the area.

That seriously creeps me out. I'm glad that girl wasn't more seriously harmed, and I pray to God that no one else gets in a car with him.

I'm hoping that the girl reported to be with him is the one who they found bound... and not another girl.

OMG! That is the scariest thing I've heard in awhile! Thank goodness shes okay...things could've turned out very badly. She must have a good guardian angel.

I agree with the above poster regarding the message posted about the missing girl. It doesn't take much effort to type out a clear message. I understand being shaken up and words not flowing well. But, I could barely understand what was typed.

I'm really hoping they catch this s.o.b. Who knows what others things he's done or plans on doing. And lord prove me wrong, but when reading the posting I got the impression he had a 'young' girl with him (not for the job position either). If he does have another girl with him I pray they find her safely.

Ugh! All these creeps make me so freaking angry!

Thanks to the O.P. for posting this. I have alerted my horsey friends and will be posting this story at the boarding barn. What freaks me out is how isolated many barns are and how many women are working alone at them. The manager at my current boarding barn is a young woman who is there alone for hours every day. I instantly thought of her and her safety as I read this story.

To those who may not take time to open a story link: (my 'puter sometimes takes FOREVER to open newstories, due to all the multimedia content. A brief synopsis along with a link is always appreciated, because I tend to just skip away from posts that are just a link, and would bet others do too)

Girl was found bound in duct tape in a PA motel, injured but alive. Apparently scammed into thinking she was working for a douchebag named Arnold Fox aka Michael Fox from Saratoga Springs NY. Claims to have "Fox Farm", is meeting women online and 'hiring' them to work at his horse farm.
Be very leery of anything to do with Fox Farms, Micheal or Arnold Fox. There's a pic of him in that link.

                      Shooting's too good for him.
Bind him up in duct tape and leave him someplace for a while....like a few years.

Actually LC she was found in a NY motel but there may be other women involved. He stole her Jeep Liberty-green in color.

Weedsport, Cayuga County (WSYR-TV) – The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is On The Lookout for a man who bound a woman with duct tape in a Weedsport Best Western Motel.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office says the woman met the suspect, identified as 30-year old Arnold Fox, online through ads involving employment at horse farms. Fox convinced the victim she had been hired to work for him at “Fox Farms” in Saratoga Springs, and convinced her to meet him in the Pocono area to assist him in purchasing horses. Fox and the victim did meet and visit horse farms in Pennsylvania.

The victim called her family at approximately 11:00 p.m. Saturday to say she was about two hours from home and would be dropping Fox off in Warrensburg, N.Y. She was not heard from again until she was found Monday morning at the Best Western Motel in the Village of Weedsport.

The woman was unbound by a Weedsport Police Officer who responded to the motel based on a report that a young female was found bound in one of their rooms. The officer also found she was suffering from a head wound, and she was transported to Auburn Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released.

The Sheriff’s Office says that Fox and the victim’s vehicle are missing. They add that Arnold Fox was using the alias of Mike Fox during his contact with the victim.

The investigation has not revealed any horse farm in the Saratoga Springs area that Fox owns, but he has been known to work on farms in the Adirondack area, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Fox also communicated with at least two other females online using the same rouse, but had not met them in person.

The Sheriff’s Office is attempting to locate witnesses who saw Arnold Fox or saw him with a female anytime after Thursday 12/3/09 and anyone with information about the whereabouts of Arnold C. Fox or the victim’s vehicle, a 2003 Jeep Liberty with Massachusetts registration 522DF8.

Detectives also want to interview any persons who conversed with Fox online or responded to any online add posted by him or “Fox Farms.” Persons with information may call Cayuga County Sheriff’s Detectives at (315) 253-1610. If the information is of an emergency nature persons may contact our 911 center at (315) 253-1222.

All the little girls that post online "I am 12 and want a job with horses, etc" Scares the crap out of me - because there are thousands of "Mike Fox's" out there just looking for an opportunity My thoughts and prayers are with Nikki!

Sadly, it just reinforces my feelings about posting/answering ads-never respond alone. Even if it's for a job, no one who is seriously hiring would fault you for showing up with a friend if meeting in a remote location like a horse barn.

And having a pick up, I'm often asked to be the "back up" for friends responding to sale ads. Women alone have to be smart and think defensively.

Hope they lock him up and throw away the key. Or feed him to the alligators.

I'm in Albany and posted this article to my FB page as most of my FB friends are horsey people.

Women who are offered horsey jobs that first involved travelling a long way to "look at horses" or pick up a horse should be very careful about who they travel with and meetup with. I know many horsewomen who think nothing of driving hundreds of miles alone to pick up a horse. If it is a scam, they could be in serious peril.

Yes, I'm sure many women who would not dream of meeting a stranger from an internet dating service alone would just hop in the car to go do something with a horse. It's always good to be careful.

I hope the victim in this case is OK.
