Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Some more updates on a few FLF:

Brolio is back to work after a few weeks on "light duty" to allow a green osselet to set. We did take X-Rays to be sure the joint space wasn't compromised (it's not!), he seems happy to be back in work. I am treating him for ulcers using Pop Rocks, I've suspected for some time and decided to take the plunge. He seems to be responding favorably to the treatment so far. Bro also got kicked out on turnout board to give my bank account a small break, he seems OK, but I do think he misses his stall... I may have to give in when one opens up again. His canter is just fan-freaking-tastic, sooo adjustable! If he ever fails as an event horse, the show hunter ring would be a good place for him. I plan on just schooling him xc this year with lots of hunter paces and hacks with a "soft goal" of doing GVRDC HT in August, either Intro or BN.

He did go on his 3rd field trip to Mendon Ponds Park (with Sandy Castle and 7 other horses!) this past Sunday as it was warm and sunny and perfect. Of course, everyone else in Rochester thought so too, so he got to see lots of hikers, dogs, kids on a playground, boats, bicycles and lots (!) of motorcycles which he took in stride like an old trail plug. We got in some ditch and water training in too!

Sandy Castle: She has been doing fantastic with her owner, going on lots of field trips (even out fox hunting!). Bro and I took a lesson with her and her owner a couple weeks ago where she finally picked up her feet and JUMPED over the fences (she had been clobbering them for a while...)! She's great to have around and love having her at the barn.

Our Helen Wheels (Fiona): Can I say I wish I was smaller so I could've bought this horse? Fiona is in training at the barn and wow! She is one scopey little mare, knows exactly where her feet are. I was lucky enough to jump her at her first 2 field trips (one a lesson with a local h/j trainer, one a schooling session before a hunter show) and a few gymnastic lessons as it is easier for my trainer to set the exercises and have someone capable(me) ride the horse. She was excellent for the field trips, jumped everything without hesitation! I've even started to call her "Mighty Mouse"! Her owner has been out more often now, as she has her other horse boarded with Fiona, and loves her to bits!

Genuine Offer (Bella): I haven't seen her go personally as much, as her owner is usually at the barn opposite of me, but I hear from our trainer that she is doing well. She did go to her first show in March in the Hunters, it turned out to be a great schooling opportunity! She is one athletic mare! I can't wait to see her at the end of the year.

Pizzaria: He's owned by a PC kid who lessons with our trainer. Unfortunately, his rider injured himself (not horse related) and is still on the "injured reserve." So Pizza came for a few weeks of training. This horse is a serious athlete... His canter is phenomenal to watch, he's not even relaxed and supple yet and his hind foot is already almost under his girth!! Trainer says if his front end is half as nice as his hind end, watch out world!

One Classy Lady: I get reports from her owner that Lady is really starting to shine in her lessons and is starting to work on 2'9" courses! Her owner is planning to take it easy, showing wise, this summer with Lady and will hopefully compete her in eventing next year or possibly this fall.

I think that about covers it!

    • A tiny updated on my girls: Jordanna Bananna is doing great. She sticks at 14.3 and is a prefect fit for me. I can't get over how amazing this mare is, I gush about her all the time.

Catillac Cutie is mostly hanging out trying to gain weight. She is also quietly looking for her own person but in the mean time her retraining is getting started now that the weather is looking up.

      • Very big day today... I cantered River for the first time since Thanksgiving!

He is such a GOOD BOY. We'll be going to a show in a couple weeks... Intro combined test, intro dressage test B, and possibly intro test C if he's being good.

        • Lovely updates!

Bailey & I are going to GVRDC Combined Test this weekend to break out into the world of eventing. We'll be doing Intro. Then GVPC Spring Event doing Intro a couple weeks after that. He's been doing so well at jumping, it's like it's all finally clicking with him. We went on our first small trail ride last night too, and he was wonderful.

Have some video's of recent rides up on my YouTube page: http://www.youtube.com/user/Silver4488

Not sure yet. I might if I can find a ride. Our next trip for sure though is GVPC Event on the 25th doing Intro.

Bailey did his first Intro at GVRDC Combined Test yesterday. He was a really good boy for our first time out. Warmed up great, but once we switched rings, his ADD kicked in. We got a 36.5% in dressage, which I was happy with considering he was really distracted & I tried my best to bring him back down.

He rocked stadium. My stupid insecurities flared up during warm-up, but my trainer got me laughing, and we went in and jumped everything clear....with 3' to spare, lol. I actually started to relax & laugh halfway through, and started to have a lot of fun.

                • buffalocolleen's Darkness Falls went to the Hamburg Equifest in March to ride in a dressage demonstration presented by Kathy Wood-Copa.

The atmosphere in the arena was waaaayyyyyy crazier than the video imparts! Tilly contended beautifully with fizzy friesans and spinny-frothy hanoverians, to say nothing of loudly cracking microphones and the general melee of everyone watching and equifesting around the edge.

She was a really good girl and just let me quietly steer her around through it all. What a good girl!

                    • My first show on Timer

This past weekend, I finally rode my own FLF, Time Piece, in a hunter show! It was Timer's fourth show overall, and his first this year. He was such a good boy -- never peeked at a thing, just marched right around. I had a lot of rust to knock off, since I hadn't shown in the hunters in about 5 years, but Timer gave me a lot of confidence. A few rough spots to smooth out -- late lead change, jumped in to one line too slow -- but all in all not too bad a beginning of our show career together. These little jumps are just too easy for him!

Yes! We're doing the Intro CT, and Intro B and C dressage tests.. C might get scratched if we can't get canter transitions better, we'll see on that. I might see about XC schooling if it's available, but that'll depend on how he is and how brave I am, lol. We'll have to do an FLF photo. Dr. Lignom is going, too.

ADVICE WANTED: Tips on getting canter transitions to be not terrible? It usually takes several tries and lots of very fast trotting before getting a canter. I'm asking the way I always do--sit the trot, inside leg at the girth, outside leg back a little, and I'm even using voice commands (which I very rarely do). Does he not understand how I'm asking? He does nice transitions on the longe without excessive effort on my part (say "can-TER" and wave the whip). I've been trying extra hard to keep my body up and relaxed so I'm not getting in his way or giving conflicting signals. We have 7 days to get our canter transitions halfway decent... or at least get them on the first try, lol.

J, The Jolly is pretty much my favorite mare ever. Shhhh, don't tell my mare!

                              • I remember seeing Top Gun at quite a few events I jump judged! I'm so excited you guys are coming! I didn't think you'd come all the way to Buffalo area when there's so much in Rochester. We'll have to have an FLF party!

His dressage test was the most focused it's ever been, so proud of him. He was great stadium, had a rail due to my own fault. Need to work on my confidence over fences. But overall, I was super happy about how we did. On to GVPC Spring Event next weekend doing Intro.
