Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • When horse people go to professional meetings...

So I'm attending a medical oriented professional conference. My colleague and I were in the exhibit hall, trying to score free stuff from the vendors, flash drives and mini textbooks and the like. I see this large advertisement for a new rx med for chronic pain....and am horrified. Said ad depicts a horse, lead rope wrapped around neck, jumping over a BARBED WIRE fence, with the tag line "breaking free." I seriously hope the barbed wire was photoshopped in..... I get the point of the ad, of breaking free of the pain, but why barbed wire????? My stomach turned just seeing the ad.

I was just aghasted and of course none of my non-horsey co-workers get it, which is why I vent to COTH

2 more days until I'm home and can see my pony.....

They do jump over barbed wire while hunting in NZ. Still I am sure the pic was pretty freaky, sort of like the bridles that don't go anywhere and saddles on backwards. Hope your trip is productive and over soon.

Since I have dined with you personally, I can just picture your face aghast. You are a classy lady

You guys will like this one...

A few years ago I used to work for a decent sized electronics retailer. They made us come to training sessions, WITHOUT PAY, on our day off. So one of the last ones I went to, I got off a horse, climbed into the truck and went to the meeting. Wearing Ariat paddock boots, my full chaps, and an old torn/ripped coat, that I wore out to the barn. Immediately after that, they made a rule about being dressed like your going to work for the meetings...

My silent protest about having to come to work, and drive about an hour there at that, for NO PAY, and my day off...

I bet even today, if I walked into one of the stores, asked if they had ever heard the story about why they have to be dressed for work at meetings, they would say yes, they heard about it...

                Ah...

I was at a meeting for a professional organization I am a member of a few weeks ago--I'm currently trying to get elected to the board, so attempting to put my best foot forward.

The president walks up to me to say hello, looks at me strangely, and pulls a long strand of hay out of my hair...

Somewhat reluctantly though. They jump wire fences but usually "drop" the top wire and/or put a spar on the top of it for a bit of protection. Not the best I agree.

Not to say barbed wire is ok for horses, but when I was growing up, all of our horses were pastured with the cows and with barbed wire fencing. None of them (~ 8 horses and ponies total) ever got hurt in the wire. Of course none of them were worth very much -- if they' been worth anything, they'd probably have gotten tangled in it many times!

At an educators' conference, I was chatting with the textbook reps and noticed the cover of one of the new textbooks: a knight in full armour aiming his lance at a butterfly, riding what looked like a Friesian--but the horse and rider had CLEARLY been photoshopped together, I doubt anyone was on the horse in the picture originally, just from his stance. And, at the bottom of the cover--a nice set of rubber *petal* bell boots and some mud covered hooves. It cracked me up.

Sorry, flashdrives are in short supply.

New rules this year....the pharmaceutical companies are only allowed to give educational materials to physicians. Since that's the bulk of the attendees, that means no pens, no flashdrives, no clipboards for anyone Apparently MDs from Massachusetts and Vermont can't even legally accept food. So it's all pocket guides to this disease or that drug. Darn ethics, spoiling everything

On the other hand, one of the vendors was giving free lyophilized cytokines (stable at RT) that I just happen to need for upcoming experiments. And I got a free subscription to Epocrates, very useful PDA program for med school.

I cannot wait to leave New Orleans. THis humidity and rain is killing me. And I miss my horse obviously. Other than the carriages downtown, I am seriously equinemic and in need of a horse transfusion ASAP.

                          Ah, the gratuities...

At NASA we had a rule of thumb: a gratuity was anything you couldn't eat, drink, or *bleep* within 24 hours.

Eeeek, docs in some states can't accept FOOD??? Why even bother becoming a doctor, then? The laws about drug reps are so stupid. Does the government honestly think doctors are so stupid that they're going to prescribe based on who brings the best presents? And in offices, doctors don't even get to enjoy most of it, the office staff descends on goodies like vultures!

ummm...yes. The government does think that some (many) physicians will do anything for a buck. Any doctor who accepted food from a rep, and then got p/oed at their staff because the office staff ate it all up -well that says it, doesn't it!

Pharma has routinely given out $500+ dinners, free drugs (including speed that med students received in the not so distant past), 2K+cruises -including food, free goodies and other "freebies" that big pharma to promote their products. It has been a significant issue.

Check out the Merck and Vioxx story, if you want examples of how easily doctors can be manipulated...

Well, when I go to the Genetics Society of America meetings (affectionally known as "The Fly Meeting"), we get plastic flies, free copies of journals, and one injection service gives out chocolate covered cookies. Neener neener. This is why I always look up COTHers in the area and arrange a Tack Store Shopping Trip.

Yet MORE stuff that I missed career day at school! Engineers get rulers and pencils (mechanical, but still pensils), an occassional plastic toy car/bot/plane/train/bridge and all kinds of demo pipe (concrete, plastic and metal - but too small to be of use except to clutter the cube area) but flash drives?! Cruises?! *snork* Food? now food would be fabulous! That's rare too.

Here's hoping you get home to your horsie soon!!
