Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I was at Sweet Briar until this year and this is the first I've heard of it. Perhaps it is newly-established?

I graduated Hollins in '03, and remember Liberty being at IHSA shows when I was there. Nothing sticks out in my mind about them one way or the other--not one of the top teams in the region, but I also don't remember anything bad about the team's riding, just a smaller team and program than some of the other schools.

They actually allow women to participate? I'm sort of surprised. I mean, I know it's not as restrictive as Bob Jones University (to name one), but still.

There are pictures from the team at the farm's web site (including the shot from Fugly's blog), so maybe the team is not so new?

This part of their site, in particular, is a nice mix of seemingly innocuous pictures and red flags. I see at least five things that give me pause.

I'd be interested to know how they can "GUARANTEE!!!" that every horse they sell is beginner and child safe. Although having bought my horse out of a similar barn, sometimes the mere fact that the horse survived and stayed sound there proves that the horse has a good self-preservation instinct.

At $840/month for board, these folks could certainly afford some killer Clinique gift sets...

Really? I graduated from W&L in '08, and did not see Liberty at any of our shows. We are in the same region as Hollins. Are you thinking of Longwood? Or maybe they switched regions between 2003 and fall of 2004 (when I joined the team)? Wouldn't make much sense though since both Randolph College and Lynchburg College are in our region.

Mara, they are a NCAA Division I school - they have to have women's sports due to Title IX. I checked out the school's website - they have all the standard sports (volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, etc). No mention of a riding team though.

I was surprised to see that they are, in fact, accredited. I had always heard that they are not.

I used to drive through Lynchburg on my way to Lexington - always a sight to see! Every building has LU in huge letters on the side. The tuition is very inexpensive for a private school - $22k a year. The buildings are all brand new and gorgeous.

                        Different strokes for different folks.

I have been meaning to read that book about the kid who transfers to Liberty for a semester.

Another of Fugly's postings where she's going off about something and her brain dead followers chiming in, even though they have no clue about what's really going on. Yes, Ms. Rivers has the LU Equestrian Team. They were just established this year, which is why none of you have seen them riding yet. As far as those students who are being 'pushed before they're ready', you don't know their backgrounds or how long they'd been riding previously with other trainers and no improvement. The horse world is very small, and Ms. Rivers is a friend of mine. Agree with her methods or not, she's the only one who could make Casper into a decent equine citizen and a good riding partner. I had 3 other trainers tell me to put him down because he was dangerous. So be careful of what you say because you have no real information, just Fugly's hysterical, spittle filled rantings.

Well, if some of those videos are her students, they're not very good jumpers. The one I watched had better pray the horse never throws his head up on a landing because if he does her best-case scenario is a broken nose. She's laying on the horse's neck, she has no leg, and if she loses a stirrup she's going off. No contact on landing with the horse's mouth, either, so I HOPE he's a packer.

I don't get what Fugly was saying about the 'backwards oxer', though. In the picture the rider's position is bad (again, WAY too far forward without the leg to back it up) but the "oxer" has no ground line and the higher bar is at most 2" higher--it's not a 5'6" GP triple bar where I could see worrying about the horse not seeing the lower rail but come on, I've jumped things like that before on a greenie and I lived.

But here and at Fugly blog, can people please not slag on Liberty for being a religiously conservative school? I don't think it would be quite so casually accepted if they were Orthodox Jewish or Muslim or "secular humanist". When I was at W&L (a little...uh...earlier than you, Ben & Me...'08, MAN, I feel old now, and as I'm a girl I can't have gone there THAT long ago, right? We can't been co-ed that long, right? *goes looking for her walker*) I met kids from LU a few times and believe it or not, no one tried to convert me to Evangelical Christianity or tried to give me religious literature. Perfectly nice people.

Dancer, those students are shown their videos and there's discussion about what they're doing wrong, and how it needs to be fixed. Ms. Rivers is aware that some of the riders have horrible form, but she doesn't think dissing them in public is a good idea. She works with them behind closed doors and in private training sessions. I thought the one girl was jumping far too high for her skills, but her horse IS a packer as well as an old 3 day eventer, so he takes care of his young rider. I'll make sure to tell her that she needs to take down her videos, or make them private for just her students and herself, since Fugly and her baying hounds are out for blood. I'm in contact with Liberty students and faculty on a daily basis. They're hardly Bible thumping Evangelicals who try to corner and 'save' you. Unless you know they're from Liberty, you'd think they were just average, everyday people, which they are.

If it's behind closed doors, and they don't want people tearing them apart, they really should not be posting videos on YouTube.

For those of you making fun of the wording in the ad, Ms. Rivers didn't write the piece; someone else did. I saw the two page spread myself only after it was published, otherwise I would have pointed out the correct spellings before it went to print. Her prices are her prices, and some people have no problem paying them. From this 'horrible ad', she's already had 2 new horses come in, and there are 3 other people who have visited the barn who are considering bringing in theirs. Make fun of her all you want, but her students DO win ribbons. That girl with 'horrible form' has taken second and third places against college riders in fairly large classes. I've been there to see her do it, so it's not hearsay.

I don't disagree with you, dancer. You always take a risk of people saying unkind things if you post something for public consumption. The girl everyone is tearing apart is 13 y/o, and the comments have been very hurtful. Ms. Rivers has disabled the comments on her videos, and I think the next logical step is making them private.

Agreed. The only part that disturbs me about this whole story is that the trainer shows this stuff to everyone in PUBLIC videos and on a PUBLIC web site. While I agree that Fugly goes on tirades sometimes about ridiculous things, the existence of her site drives home the point that stuff you post online is public and available for the world's commentary.

Frankly I have seen plenty of barns where this kind of shenanigans goes on--inappropriate footwear and riding wear, riders pushed beyond their level and it's justified "because they're riding a packer", etc. But most trainers are smart enough not to post videos or pics online that show their students and business at its worst. Through the magic of proofreading and careful editing, you can make even the most hoody barn look great. Apparently this trainer missed that memo. Seeing as she's removed most of the videos, she seems to be getting the point now. Let's hope one of her lovely LU students volunteers to proofread and edit her site next, which will help preserve her professional reputation.

The school's religious bent are of no interest to me. AFAIK religion has no relationship to good or bad equestrian behavior.
