Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • COTHers in eastern VA.....check in.

    How's everyone doing?

With tides 7' above normal, 50 mile per hour wind gusts, 5+" of rain, power outages, bridges, tunnels, schools and offices closed.....I'm hoping you, your family and critters are all safe and sound. The cities have asked people to evacuate low lying areas. However, if you live here, you know the whole area is low lying.

I have 15" of water covering my street, trees down and was without power most of the morning.

    I'm inland a bit...near the 4H center in Wakefield, but it's dreadful.
Horizontal rain, along with the winds are just ceaseless.
I'm not even near a body of water and I have a foot of water in my pastures.

I'd hate to have to deal with the tidal flooding that those of you closer to the rivers and bay are dealing with.

    Jingles to all!
Hopefully this thing will blow itself out soon.

Checking in from Va Beach - Horizontal rain day 2.

Ponies are dry in their stalls, but a little grumpy about the weather. High tide has past - good thing - ditches are full and overflowing onto the roads. Most ditches are tidal here so next high tide will be scary. Just got back from trying to take DD to work and can't drive more then 1/2 mile any direction - streets flooded or trees down blocking passage.

Looks like this will last through tomorrow. With the water issue even if it does horses won't be able to go out to pasture until it drains a little. Their barn looks like it had a moat around it.

We're Ok here for now. I'm located south of the Suffolk airport about 9 miles just north of the Carolina border. We're on high ground and no flooding problems from rivers or streams or the ocean. Winds are very strong right now...the worst we've seen so far. My guess would be 35-45 mph with higher gusts. We are in a very open area here and generally get more wind than most places. The temp is down to 52 F and my poor outside horses are miserable.

We just got done mucking the main barn and it took two of us about 2 hours as we've had it full of horses for the last 24 hours. We brought in an outside mare with a foal who did not have the sense to go into a shelter and her poor baby was miserably cold.

We still have power but I'm not sure how we got this lucky. My internet is losing it's signal now too...hopefully I can get this posted. We are on a satellite.

What a terrible mess and they keep saying this will go on another 24 hours or so. My God...what a nightmare. Stay safe everyone.

dawglover...is 460 open? My husband is in Petersburg today...I'm worred about flooding along some of the low areas along that road.

We're safe over here on the Eastern Shore. We do have some flooding in low-lying areas, but this peninsula is a natural watershed (thank goodness!). Winds gusting to 60 with horizontal rain. We had 5" rain overnight along with spotty power outages. Who knows how much more rain we've had today.

The horses are just standing around in the barn. They actually have sense enough to get in out of the rain .

Really, though, it's very nasty with the most danger from ponding water on the roadways, downed trees, limbs, and power lines.

              Take care, all!

Ugh, I really feel for y'all. We're in between Richmond and Charlottesville and it is a mess here, I can't even imagine it down there. My horses went out for about 7 hrs. yesterday and I let them out just long enough to muck this morning and locked them back in. They were NOT happy when I left for work but I couldn't stand the thoughts of them being out in this mess. Our place is wide open also and windy.

                Hang in there!

I'm battling bronchitis with the 55 mph gusts, sideways COLD rain and boot sucking mud. Horses are staying dry in their barn, but certainly giving me 10x the cleanup time. I'm keeping tubs full and feeding soaked cubes. So far the power has stayed on. The weather was perfect last weekend, except somebody must have wishes for rain. Back out for the evening check ... Then more cough syrup and antibiotics, or maybe a hot toddie or 2. r

Yep Daydream, 460 is open but lots of water ponding on the roadway, especially those outside lanes. Gotta be careful of hydroplaning.

Lots of small limbs and debris but I didn't run across anything huge in the roadway when I was out earlier.

That could change at any minute though because the ground is sodden and trees are swaying.

Really ready for this to stop now.

I'm in Hampton with my horse boarded on waterfront propeperty to an inlet pretty darn close to the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. As of last night water was half way up the back fields, about a quarter mile from the barn. During Isabel the barn stayed dry, barely, so we're expecting to ride this one out too. I'm heading over there in about an hour to clean stalls since I think we'll get a break in the rain. So far power is good, but the streets are starting to flood since the drains can't keep up.

I am worried about my friend in Virginia Beach. Her farm in on Knotts Island Road, and she has Back Bay within 1000' of the house/barn on both sides. She has quite a few horses there, so I don't know if they would have moved them inland.

Thanks Dawglover. My husband just made it home a few minutes ago. 460 is open all the way for now anyway.

Fairview...there is a lot of flooding in VA Beach. Hopefully she evacuated.

Wind has really gotten bad here but the rain has let up some..thank goodness. Looks like we could get some wrap around rain tomorrow from the spinning of the system but the worst is over here. I'm hoping I can get some horses out of the barn in the morning for a while. They are getting tired of being locked up.

Another Eastern Shoreman here. We humans are cold, wet, wind-blown, and just generally miserable. We've got so much standing water here that you'd almost think we have waterfront property now. The horse on the other hand are faring much better. One mare won't come in out of this weather even if it did cause her to shiver yesterday (she abolutely hates being stalled) so she's standing outside in her heavyweight blanket happy as a clam now. And my little girls are dry and happy in their stalls with plenty of hay to get them through until the sun decides to visit us again.

Anyone else keep checking the radar hoping that all the bad green and yellow stuff will magically disappear?

                            Keep dry everyone!

Yikes, RNB. That's one HECK of a LOT of water! Here, inland, we've got cold and wind, but the rain pretty well stopped thurs. morning/overnight. Yikes, again!

I think the worst is over finally.

This morning it's just breezy and heavy drizzle.

Now, if the foot of standing water will just drain out of my front pasture, I will be a happy camper.

We are still here! Our only casualty seems to be my shavings bin roof. It is two sections of tarp stretched on a wooden frame and was held down by ractchets. One side was blown half off last night...in the worst wind we had throughout the storm... and the wood ripped apart...so my nice fluffy shavings are now getting wet. We will attempt to do something here in a bit when some more help arrives but a windy day is not a good time to monkey with something like that. The roof sections can become a "sail" quickly and be taken by the wind.

Still a sideways drizzle here also. I will probably throw out the inside horses for a bit so we can clean stalls and rebed. They need a bit of exercise as well and a little drizzle won't kill them.

My outside horses were a lot happier this a.m. at feeding time. They are still wet but the miserable look in their eyes was gone. They are not so desperate to stand butt to the wind either so that is a positive sign.

I am still quite amazed to see so much wind left over and still rain falling from the sky. Yuck...I'm really over this.

On the bright side...I'm getting some inside projects done.
