Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Fei, I would imagine it depends on how much you have to lose. Since I have 80 pounds to lose, the weight may be coming off a bit quicker for me initially. Let me tell you that for the first 3+ weeks, I only lost 2 pounds I lost the other 12 pounds all in the last 2+ weeks...weird I know but I'm not arguing. I am told by the gym geeks that I spent my first 2-3 weeks increasing my lean muscle which in turn will burn off calories at a faster rate.

Basically what I am doing is the following: I go to the gym a minimum of 5x/week and do at least 60 minutes of fairly intense cardio (for me it's the ellyptical machine). In addition to this, I have changed my eating habits from eating 3 large meals a day to eating 6 smaller snacks/meals. I eat every 2-3 hours during the day...this way I am not hungry.

I have been keeping myself to 1200 calories or less a day. I have also been conscious about fat content and not so much conscious about carbs....I found that when I focused on reducing carbs, I had no energy at the gym.....so I don't focus on them anymore.

I also take a fat burner called Leanfire. I know some folks are against taking these sort of products and that's fine, but it gives me energy and I do not notice side effects. This product was created by Sylvester Stallone, and is the most effective product I've found since the FDA did away with Ephedra. I am not religious about taking it either...but I probably take it 4x/week or so.

I hope this helps....it has taken me a long time to figure out what "might" work for me....and lets just say I am still "holding my breath".....

Sannois....NO PROBLEM if you want to figure out something that is more user-friendly. Please keep the board posted on what you find out. In the meantime, everyone can just post here
Live each day to the fullest.

        • Sannois- Thank you for putting together the EZboard. I don't know how that works, but the Yahoo is quite difficult to follow- not to mention time consuming. Anything has to be better.
YadaYada- Sounds like you are doing great. My biggest problem is finding the time to get to the gym. I would love to try and work out 5x's.
          Keep up the great work

I don't think you should feel obligated to post your results, it you want to great, but you can still get support from everyone whether you're having great success like YYY or really struggling, like many of us will be. Thats one of the most important things I learned at WW, we are not perfect and there will be plenty of times that we either GAIN or will be stuck in one place for a while, just keep plugging away little by little.

I like posting on this BB so much better than the Yahoo group.

                      • I have been working hard. Lean cuisine and salad have been my best friends (and those great little 100 cal. packs)I keep it between 1000-1200 cal a day. I have been running/step machine training 3+ miles most days. I have so far (since the 3rd) lost 10#s. I joined the Y and did their fitness workup, I wanted to do weight training as well, but they said I should not I (under the fat) I have a lot of muscle (I did more push ups and sit ups in a minute than they had seen in a long time), so a lot of fast cardio for me! I love the lean cuisine pizzas, their meals work great for me as I work with horses all day and do not like to cook, I always have a good salad with my dinner and fruit as snacks if needed. If I can do it anyone can (I am a chocoholic!), I let myself have one dinner a week (friday night) when I can eat whatever I want, no counting allowed! I find that I eat less than before because I am full faster.

                          • I went to the EZboard and immediately had 3 popups! I HATE sites that 'open' you to adware and such. I have to clean my computer twice a week as it is because of the kids using it

This last weekend I shopped with my diet in mind and particularly looking for low fat LOW SUGAR yogurt. Blue Bunny has a good bet--no fat and sweetened with Splenda. It has proved to be very tasty without tasting 'no fat no sugar no good'. I have yogurt twice a day--it is my secret weapon against irritable bowel!

I've also stepped up my snacks--specifically unsweetened applesauce for morning break, and a pear for afternoon. That makes my 3 fruits daily. I eat either braised chicken or a hamburger patty for dinner with salad. Usually just slice the chicken into the salad.

A handful of almonds for evening snack.

My shakiness is gone--when I wake up I'm hungry--but I'm not ready to fall down with weakness/shakiness. Don't miss that at all!

My jeans are getting loose, too. I know it's just water weight--I mean, I am peeing about 20 times a day--drinking lots of water. I can bend over to tie my barn boots without wanting to pass out from not being able to breathe.

FINALLY, I bought myself a pedometer, and I am wearing it daily at work. Besides going out to the bathroom 10 times daily, I'm also taking walks around the building, taking the stairs up and back down, just to rack up steps on the pedometer. It's kind of an exercise program for those of us who can't get out to exercise, don't have equipment at home, so on.

I will report ONE slip in the past two weeks. I broke and bought one small Peanut M & M's--and totally did NOT enjoy. It just made me feel--stupid. Sigh.

                            • Sorry, Well I tried.. It is a free site, unless we want to make it a gold site. It costs money. If I get enough interest in it I will put some money into it. I have a mac so I never get pop ups. I'm trying to help people get a place they can feel comfortable in.

Are they really good? I thought that low fat pizza with taste was actually too much to hope for!!!

I, too, have lean cuisines for every lunch at work and have been enjoying most of them. The pasta ones are particularly good Today I am trying the Asian chicken...let's just say I am cautiously optimistic....

I also just want to say, good for all of you who have developed plans and are sticking to them. I think we all have to be careful about not feeling SO "guilty" when we have something "bad". I can tell you that "guilt" can lead you to worse things...like eating disorders. I used to feel very guilty when I had chocolate or ate REAL pizza etc...but now I am trying to keep focused and remember simply that as long as I keep the portions in moderation and it is the "exception" moreso than the "rule"....I will be fine...and more importantly, it is a lifestyle change that I can actually LIVE with......

                                • I'm thinking the easiest format may be to do a PT here... What does everybody think? I'm on several PTs where we have a large number of people. On the large topics you'll probably want to make sure you change your settings, so you don't get a e-mail sent everytime somebody posts...or your in-box will be stuffed!

Also, I was wondering if I can get some low carb meal and snack ideas...I don't want to get bored and become discouraged.

I seriously started this week and feel that I'm off to a good start.

                                  • To be honest, I kind of dropped off the group when it went to Yahoo. Not a fan of signing up for more accounts and the additional spam that goes with it, etc. I would be more than happy to keep a thread going here or to do a big PT. Whatever works for everyone else.

As for my personal update... I have been hitting the gym three days a week. I took a yoga class the other day. It was so much harder than the yoga videos I had been doing, but I felt like I worked every inch of my body. The result? So far I feel 100% better and I have lost 4lbs.

                                    <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>Hey Yada x3

I wasn't dropping a thing for the first 4 weeks and then it was like I noticed a difference overnight. I met with a personal trainer and he told me that you should mix the various weight machines with cardio mixed in between the work out. It helps bring your heart rate up and is more effective than just weight training and then 30 minutes on the treadmill/ eliptical/ whatever. I knew nothing about any of this working out business, but his advice of mixing up the routine seems to be working- and I am not bored.

I am very worried about trying to fit everything in when the weather gets nice enough to ride again. I didn't even see them last night...and they live in my backyard
