Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I am sorry but The OOPS part is what made me giggle. when I got Bugs, all of her records from birth until the point of purchase were given to me and trackers usually keep pretty good records. Bugs had every shot known to man. Can you call her previous owners and ask for her previous shot records?

    • Might try some cold hosing and wrapping for the swelling. I usually don't call the vet unless lameness is involved or the situation gets worse instead of better. If she is not lame, no harm in waiting a few days to evaluate what is going on.

Earlier this year one of my mare's knee swelled up quite bad. but, she was sound so I didn't call the vet right away. It didn't resolve in a week so I did call the vet just to make sure it wasn't anything serious. Of course, they just wrapped it and told me to keep it wrapped for a week and put her on stall rest! It did take over a month for it to go completely down. We never did figure out what she did but she was never lame so I didn't lose any sleep over it.

      • Well I have been out playing with my guys and rode Plunge and Crystal (Chris)!! They are just awesome. Plunge is a character - he loves the water. Chris loves to jump - he clear a 4ft. pile of firewood while playing out in the pasture. The only thing in the pasture (10 acres) other then grass - he decides to jump it.

Now it's time for Lady and Turk. I need a step ladder to get on Turk. I'm only 5'4" - LOL!!

I will get more pictures and add them to my collection.

Have a great weekend everyone - I am taking Chris to a show on Saturday with my warmblood to see how he acts.

Hi guys, Canna belle could not get a bath - it was raining here all day yesterday. I did learn that she does not know how to cross tie - oops. I groomed her in her stall and she really seemed to enjoy it. SHe has calmed down a lot & she is very, very sweet. Today i am going to try and put her in the round pen and see how she does. SHe has some swelling and heat in her left front so I am going to try everything before I call the vet out.
= ABout shots, are they up to date? DO they get west Nile? DO you think I should get all of her shots done now? We have soo much standing water b/c of the hurricanes and the mosquitoes are soo big they could pick up the horses and carry them away!!! <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Hi gang, I wish I could comment on all your wonderful success stories, especially some of the horses I personally got to know while at NH. I am so happy that you love your new family member(s), and wish you all the luck in the world. It is such a joy to read through these posts.

Kim I am not sure how in depth our phone conversations went as it was so hectic at NH and all that rain! But treat her like she has almost no training (ground manners that is). These animals are used to be tied in their stall when tacked up/brushed so they do tend to get anxious when you do them. I am sorry you learned the hard way about cross ties, but at least everything is fine. Again this is something that is very new to them, so you need to introduce these things to them. It sounds like she likes attention in her stall when groomed; she really is a sweet lovely mare . As for vaccinations I treated all mine like they had none prior which is ‘usually’ the case but not always. I did two shots at a time, 3 separate vet visits but well worth it to me…

Once she adjusted, and is ready for group turnout. Make sure you have a farrier pull off his racing shoes. Often they have toe-grabs on their shoes that can injury another horse if kicked. It is important to introduce new horses slowly. One or two horses will be more excitement to your new horse then can remember. Let him make a buddy (sounds like she already has) he can be turned together with, and there will be no problems. Good luck and hopefully the swelling will be a non issue...

OK, I have to hunt down 17handtb because I KNOW that she knows about Smokey Way - but I can tell you that Govans' trainer decided to NOT sell him despite multiple offers. He was running really well, and had been started over fences at home - so he opted to keep him.

                • Dara, it's supposed to be a SECRET

but she's good - much calmer last night than the night before - we scritched each other for quite some time in her stall... she started pawing when I sat down on a tack trunk outside her stall and ignored her for a minute

She had ignored breakfast, but cleaned up her dinner and hay last night - so she's definitely settling.

my heart, it is slowly melting...

                        • Thanks guys! Another question, sorry I am not too familiar with mares; I have not owned one in 5 years. Anyway, when a mare is in season, it is normal for her urine to be more frequent and VERY yellow?

                            • Quentin (Eloquent) is adjusting beautifully. We introduced him to two other horses slowly and he went out over night last night in a huge field. When I went to check on him, he was happily munching away in this beautiful green field with the sun shining. He let me walk right up to him and scritch him.

He was given this go ahead after my vet checked out his leg again. He's almost sound jogging. (Unfortunately, I was the one jogging, so I still haven't seen his movement.) The bump on his leg has hardened quite a bit. He's still getting Surpass massaged on it and wrapped during the day while in his stall.

He also had extensive dental work done yesterday, including getting a tooth pulled. If he liked treats, the tooth fairy would have visited him. He does have quite the parrot mouth so he doesn't get as much grass in his mouth when he grazes. At some point, he might start getting a mid-day meal. But, for now, he is still gaining weight, so all is good there.

We also gave him 1/2 of his fall shots and a tube on Strongid. (I did call the trainer to find out his schedule - he said he was due for everything. ) We'll do the 5-day Panacur Power Pack in two weeks, followed by Ivermectrin in another 2 weeks. He'll get his second 1/2 of fall shots in 4 weeks.

He is such a love. The barn staff can't believe how quiet and sweet he is. Plus, he seems to adore Pepper.

                              • Hmmm, well, yeah - it would appear that I have inadvertantly become a foster mom for a Suffolk Downs TB

Fostering will 99.9% sure lead to adoption, as I have fallen madly in love!!! She's fabulous! Didsbury aka Ruby is a beautiful amazing wonderful 3 year old gray roan filly. She's a big girl, right around 16.2. She's the sweetest thing I have ever met -- when I first saw her I scritched her neck and she put her head on my shoulder and started scritching me back If I scratch her withers, she starts at my waist and tries to work her way down to my ankle grooming me.

Unfortunately, she was started too young for being such a big girl and therefore has knee chips and probably some arthritis - we have her x-rays and we are going to have her evaluated. Hopefully she'll be manageable and I'll be able to eventually do some trail riding or light ring work with her.

In the meantime, she moved to her new home Wednesday night (she was a good girl getting on the very scary trailer in the dark) and is starting to settle in. Wednesday night was tough for her, but she's steadily getting more relaxed. She's getting her vaccinations today and her racing plates pulled off tomorrow.

She has the most amazing personality, she's very alert and inquisitive but sweet sweet sweet - I have yet to see her make a grumpy face. When I was leading her out of her stall at Suffolk Downs Wednesday night, she was very nervous and shaking a little bit - but she was so gentle and respectful of my space, she didn't take a wrong step - she just took each step very slowly

Everyone that sees her has the same comment "well if it doesnt work out with her knees she'll be a spectacular broodmare" as she is GORGEOUS!!

                                Hmm, shall I go on???

I am hoping to get some good pictures this weekend to post, and also so I can stare at her all day long while I'm at work!

                                  • Oooooh, it's LOOOOOOOOOOOVE! Congrats to LBM, and the pictures will need to be posted, of course.

Smokey Way was bought by a COTH poster - though I cannot for the life of me remember who! Maxxtrot might know; Smokey was in the group that was on "layover" at Maxxtrot's friend's place until another shipment could take more Northampton horses down South.

Congrats are also in order for Fessy's Mom, Maxxtrot, Duffy, Jersey Rio, Feanixrising, et. al. Please e-mail your photos and stories to canterne@canterusa.org. We would love to include you all on the CANTER NE Success Stories page.

And stay tuned for some photos and updates on the Northampton horses now in foster care who were helped thanks in NO small part to the generosity of all you awesome COTHers!

P.S. RomanceWriter, you're right. Most track horses aren't vaccinated, so it's best to assume your OTTB needs the full round, including WNV.

I don't yet have time to do anything with her and thought that a vacation and a stay at the fattening-up farm would do her some good. She has a stellar disposition!!!
