Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

  • oooh, Moose -- Errol Morris, the director of Fog of War, has done a series of commercials using Republicans, all of whom voted for Bush in 200, who have come to oppose Bush for various reasons. A few of them have been shown, but he's posted them on his web site.
    Errol Morris - Republicans

Here's his quote about why he did these ads, when he's never done anything as a political activist before (from Salon's War Room column):
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>Errol Morris lifts the fog around Bush's war

Any Republicans in your family who are still wavering on Bush and could use a nudge in the opposite direction? Errol Morris might be your man. The Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker ("The Fog of War") directed and edited over 70 TV spots featuring long-time Republicans from every walk of life, who explain in heartfelt, compelling words why they're switching to Kerry this year. A half-dozen of the ads have run on TV, courtesy of MoveOn -- one ran nationally during the Republican National Convention and the others in various swing states. Frustrated that his spots did not get a wider airing on TV, Morris has now put his entire army of anti-Bush Republicans on his Web site, where they can be seen ripping into the president on Iraq, the economy, the environment, civil liberties, and his character.

"We were given these ideas that there were weapons of mass destruction. But where are they?" says Lee Buttrill, a young Marine veteran of Iraq, in one Morris spot. "I was on an intelligence gathering team and looked. We never found anything. It was just a lie. It wasn't a proper use of my life, of my friends' lives, or the Marines who I've seen die around me. It's not a proper use."

Why did Morris, who has never done something like this before, take the plunge into political advertising this year? "A mixture of fear, hope and despair," he told War Room. "I'm not sure I can construct the relevant pie graph, but my guess is 60 percent fear, 30 percent despair, and 10 percent hope.

"I had just won an Oscar for 'The Fog of War,' which chronicles a half-century of error, self-deception and wishful-thinking in American foreign policy. It's hard to edit scenes about the Gulf of Tonkin incidents (where we went to war over an imagined Communist attack that never happened) or about the Cuban missile crisis (where we narrowly averted nuclear war not through diplomatic skill but blind luck) and not think about our current political situation. That's why I call this the I-WANT-MY-MOMMY-ELECTION. Everything I read, everything I hear just makes me went to crawl under the bed and suck-my-thumb."

But instead of ducking under the bed, Morris picked up his camera and began cranking out his 30-second portraits of deeply disenchanted Republican Americans. "I hope even at this late date they can make a difference."

    • Yes, CessnaPilot, I know all about the Washington Times -- a publication owned by the Moonies, which it picked up from Drudge. And as I said, even Scott McClellan and Rummy's spokesman Larry DiRita aren't buying into that one.

Why do you think someone faked the document - because THE INFORMATION PORTRAYED IS FALSE. That whole episode did nothing but show CBS and Dan Rather's bias. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Well then, we're even, I expected better from you than a vast left-wing conspiracy theory.

I don't particularly care whether or not Bush fulfilled his guard duty. I don't think it, or Kerry's Purple Hearts, should be a major issue. I think it's a diversionary tactic that politicians use because people who don't do research will just go, "Oh, OK, he's a bad dude."

I don't believe any news organization is completely devoid of bias. But if you read enough, you can come up with enough viewpoints that you can assume the truth is somewhere in the middle.

As for the issue of Bush's guard service, I just plain don't care all that much. But thanks to the media's persistence on this topic, quite a few government documents that were "overlooked" when the Bush administration was ordered to produce ALL records have been uncovered. (Due to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit by the Associated Press and others.)

Taking pot shots at CBS doesn't make you look like you have a valid argument to stand on. And I think the president looked just as foolish when he did it during the debate.

By the way I would apologize for being mean spirted if there wasn't so much of it coming from the Kerry camp. I always get feisty when someone tries to put me out of business.

And the Heinz outsourcing and how many jobs will Mrs. Heinz Kerry offer the country? Oh! wait a minute I think some one said she married for it too, so maybe she has no say in what happens to Heinz and just takes the money.

Start at home Kerry and set an example then maybe I could believe something that you say.

And are you SURE you want to stand by the fuses-as-WMD concept, because its not like we didn't know exactly what was there, right down to the gnat's eyelashes. I mean it had been documented, inventoried and sealed by the IAEA and verified to be intact within days of the invasion. • Oh, Cessna, one other point... I believe many of the people who CBS went to to verify the content of the documents for the original story were the same ones who were later cited saying they could not vouch for the authenticity of the documents themselves, or saying that they outright believed the documents were forged.

If you are willing to believe these people on the fact that the documents were not legit, why don't you believe them when they say the content WAS legit? Just honestly curious, not meant to be snarky.

                                      1. The Bush administration has released 1970 era documents relating to Bush's service that are also typed in a proportionally spaced font. Are those obviously forged?

                                      2. Killian's secretary, the one who stated that she did not type those documents, also stated that she typed a document remarkably similar to that one and it was placed in Killian's CYA file. She said that Killian had given Bush a direct order to take a physical and Bush had refused, and that Killian had been very upset about it.

But I'm with Erin that the story was largely irrelevant. There is plenty of other evidence out there, and has been for years, on what actually happened, and people have already made up their minds.

Bush has had 4 years to be in office and establish that he stands for policies very different from those he campaigned on originally. The Republicans seem surprisingly angry given that they control all three branches of government. I think it's clear that if he is reelected we'll get 4 more years of the same.

                                      • I have a couple of questions for everyone who think W is their security daddy. The missing explosives were on the weapon's inspections watch list as evidence of a nuclear weapons program in Iraq. The Bush administration knew (or should have known) about this.

Why was there no plan to seize the site where the explosives were stored when they entered Iraq?

Doesn't it bother you that Bush has no clue where the explosives went? 400 tons of C4 can't just walk away. If it was looted before the US arrived, there would be satellite evidence. It is more likely that the site was looted in the choas while the US was trying to capture Baghdad.

"Strategery" was never W's strong suit Why do you guys think he can keep us safe?

DMK the point is that the words we call things by don't change the truth of what they are. I am offended by this chastising of George W. because he believes what he believes but the total tolerance for the freedom of Oval Office by others who had less god reason for what they did. I'm not sure that I can respect a man for President whose church which he says he believes in tells the parishioners that it would be a sin to vote for him.

If someone doesn't approve of the Washington Times then do it because you don't approve and don't not approve because it's owned by a church you don't like. In fact there are two thirds of the world at any time that don't approve of any other religion but their own.

I had a long talk with a nice Muslim man about Islam and they view life differently, from their perspective since they are also the children of Abraham and to them this whole thing is just an argument of the estate of Abraham. As the first born son of Abraham Ishmael should have inherited and they have spent 5000 years trying to get his birthright back to him.
