Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

    DMK,
go back and reread what i posted. It clearly says those who chooses not to work. clearly you are not in that catagory.
You worked and because of things beyond your controll you were not working any longer.
That is what the welfare system was set up to do to assits those who can not work and those through no fault of their own find them selves without an income. It was never ment to become a lifestyle a some use it as now.
no one ever said you were less of a human or american. you earned your unemployment and other assistance because you worked for a good amount of time.
You unlike others who at one time found themselves in teh same situation went out and found another job. It may not pay what you were making ( and it is none of any of our business how much you made and are making) but at least it is some sort of income.

Well, if I could vote, it'd be Kerry.

Libgrrl, my belief is that freedom is just that, the ability to choose one's way according to one's convictions.
I am pro-choice, and have always been, although I am personally opposed to abortion. I have had two abortions and have given birth to two children. I would always , for myself, choose life over the alternative.
Civil unions are not a problem with me, nor are they for Bush. We are all entitled to our share of fulfillment and deep committment.

DMK, I appreciate and accept your sincerity. You are not, in any way, less of an American for voting as you see fit, or for believing as you do. You are an American and have the right to your convictions. Isn't that what freedom is about?

I honor the opportunity to express my views on this BB. Often, I have not had the chance to state what I believe in my community, as I and my husband are labled as dumb, intolerant, straight-laced right wingers. My husband was verbally attacked several years ago by two we regarded as friends. Their attack was ugly, cruel, untrue and viscious. They are liberal. They do not respect our right, as Americans, to our own opinions. To me, they are not spokes people for freedom. I can accept the fact they disagreed with my husband: I cannot accept their visciousness.
Several years before this incident, shortly after we moved to this area, I attended a local church in a search to find a center for our children. After the service, I was introduced to the minister, who immediately asked me my political affiliation. When I responded, nonplused, "I am a Republican", he turned his back and walked away.
Where is the tolerance? Certainly, IMO, not with the Liberals in my world.

horseless, first, thanks for the clarification on the other issue - I pretty much spend my life on factcheck.org "de-spinning" crap so I love a good shortcut.

But I really did read it right the first time. What got me was the inference that somehow Kerry was going to let more people who are somehow happy on the dole exist in that life more easily or with some sort of government blessing. Best as I read it, it was a joint effort of Dems (Senate/Presidency) and Republicans (house) that overhauled welfare the last (and only time). And BOTH parties bought excellent points (and balance!) to the table.

And a lot of people probably wondered why I didn't get a job at 1/3 my old pay. That wasn't an unrespectable amount. And I would have taken it. But I heard the phrase "overqualified" so many times (for those that even bothered with a response) I could chant it in my sleep. Ain't no way they were giving me that job.

And I have to wonder how many people who *seem* like they are inmotivated lazy slackers (like the 90+% of you who use my roads) are in that system because they have a child who will lose healthcare coverage (or they will lose heath care coverage) and/or they can't afford to take a job because the job doesn't cover daycare? We create a lot of perverse incentives and laws of unintended consequences.

Me? I'd like to wittle away at perverse incentives and let folks keep driving on my roads. I just tend to think of blanket solutions and generalizations as clever as my idea to keep the other 80% away from the stuff.

boosma - that's all good, and you are right - that is what freedom is about. And by the way, you should associate with a better class of liberal. Fortunately I like to surround myself with decent republicans. It's not like there isn't a shortage of both available...
Your crazy is showing. You might want to tuck that back in.

I just KNOW you can find a reasonable counterpart in your part of the country. You just have to stop saying "BOOOO!!!" when they come around.

Trust me, short of Houston, Texas NOBODY sits redder than the northern/eastern suburbs of Atlanta!

I'll take your Daley-esque Early and Often and raise you Jim Tobin's (New England Bush Campaign chairman) resignation and potential indictment for election fraud (he's been named by two associates in their plea agreements). Oooh, now that's got a put a crimp in the ethics portion of your CV, right?

And Sproul & Associates? What a BUMMER for the GOP that they openly funded them (gosh, I really enjoyed those GOP stamped career.com ads looking for workers who seemed to accidently lose, trash, shred or otherwise misplace democratic voter registration cards!) Sucks to be obvious, as they say.

Meanwhile we all sit on tenterhooks waiting to see what Texas hands down on Delay. I mean lets face it. You have to really work hard to violate campaign finance laws in Texas! I LOFF a politician who looks at a silly little obstacle like that and says "I can do better!"

Electioneering. Not just for Daley Dems anymore!

I think all of the Kerry people here should take a few economics classes. The they would understand that Kerry's liberal socialistic ideas just won't and can't work in this country. That's not what we're about. Want to talk about out-sourcing?? Let's then discuss all of the Heinz plants that are OUT of the country. Want to discuss socialized medicine?? Let's talk about all of the Canadians coming down here for their surgeries. People are dying of infections in poorly run Canadian hospitals - do a search on c.difficile in Canadian hospitals. Want to discuss Kerry's record of years in the senate?? Didn't think so. Want to talk about why Kerry won't sign his military 180 form?? I do ... could clear a lot up. Want to discuss why the Kerry's only paid 12% federal tax while I paid 30%?? Wake up, you Kerry folks!! Kerry is shallow, empty and spins faster than a tornado. Nothing is more important to him than his ego. I really feel sorry for his wife.

Well since we've all agreed they are both malevolent and equally incompetent the parties that support them are equally dishonest cheaters.

I'm for Bush because I like cowboys with bowed legs that walk like strutting bandy rooster and such a cute Texas drawl and a suntan. Do you think they taught him that drawl at Yale?

Sorry Kerry makes me think of Herman Munster and I can't take Herman Munster seriously for President of the USA but I would donate to a campaign for Kerry to President of France. He really looks like he should be a Frenchman. He has that regal, nobel, I'm better than you expression down pat.

Because an over 15% increase in domestic discretionary spending was a good idea? Oh please, let me have some Clinton, Bush 41 or Reagan-like numbers again!

Or was it because the stock markets over-perform when they are hinky about long term interest rates and inflation thanks to the national debt? That must explain that whole "under 10K" thing.

Outsourcing is gonna happen. Everyone knows it, Kerry openly admits he isn't going to stop it from happening. But we really shouldn't subsidize it. But in the end game most people who follow this issue realize it is a political shell game and markets will mostly act in their own interests with some tempering forces from policy. Let's just try to get the good policy out there. Or better yet, maybe we could settle debt jittes, give the markets confidence and start paying attention to the economy in toto?

*giggle* snort. Because pseudomonis (scuse the spelling) isn't killing people in American hospitals? Like my next door neighbor's father. Just 5 days ago? Please. Hospitals are a great place to get an infection and we are so not immune from that concept. But don't leap off the better medicine cliff just yet. If our system is so much better then why is it that our IMR is far worse than any other industrial nation (and a good chunk of third world nations) and our life expectancy is significantly lower?

OK, the part where he led key investigations on Iran-Contra and the Saud banking issue? Or is it because he is a liberal? Kind of neat thing. Did you know that NIXON had a more liberal voting record than Kerry? Uh huh. Of course he was conservative for his day. But the point is, days have changed, and not surprisingly, most people have evolved right along with it. What? You expected pro-segregationist Southerner pols to still carry that torch around? Neato.

Now I KNOW you have been to factcheck.org and worked out that whole 98, 367, 6,986 tax hikes and defense cuts things, so I won't insult anyone's intelligence by pandering to that drivel!

See, here's the thing. I don't care. I don't care if Bush was carried into the national guard on a daddy sponsored dais. I don't care if Kerry went to Cambodia or not. I don't care if Bush did cocaine when he was younger. I don't care if Kerry felt differently about his service after he left vietnam. I don't care if Bush didn't fulfill his TANG obligation. I don't care if Kerry only had a scratch and got the Congrssional Medal of Honor. I just really don't care.

I really do care and deeply dislike the element in this country that panders to crap like that though. Does that help clear up things?

Hmmm...Democrats discuss Foreign Policy and Taxes while all y'all can seem to muster is "skerry kerry" and oh, he looks like a groundhog?? I mean, I know that's grounds for ME not to vote for someone...

I'm so glad this board is full of mostly Kerry supporters!! I knew I had a lot in common with fellow horse-lovers!!

I think of George Bush as about as frightening as a Yorkshire Terrier, but Cheney, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld, et al., keep me awake at night.
Life would be infinitely better if pinatas suddenly appeared throughout the day.

                                        • Well even though I don't really like either of my choices I will be voting for Kerry. I can't go along with anyone who claims to be so "pro-life" yet do nothing to help our exsisting children. Abortion is not the only thing that makes one pro life/pro choice. Of course that is just one of the many reasons I won't be voting for W!
