Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.
Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

But Cessna, doesn't it bother you that a President could inspire that kind of feeling in otherwise intelligent, thinking people? It does me.
Back to Bush's speeches, silever, right on! He DOES work for us, at least til next Tuesday, and how dare he or his handlers deny ANYONE access to his speeches. It is NOT a private club, or private anything, so actually, could it be illegal for him to do so?Laurie

Those who made their minds up on this issue before the Democrats even chose their candidate are fools, just like those who say "anyone but Bush". You may as well let a computer run the country if all you can see is a binary system: "good" vs. "bad", "black" vs. "white", "liberal" vs. "conservative", "Republican" vs. "Democrat"...yechh.

deltawave, I've noticed an alarming pattern in all of your posts--they are way too sensible and well reasoned, and therefore I'm not sure they belong in any thread related to this year's election. Sorry.

I am having a hard time tolerating the postings and emails I am getting that call one or the other party a "war criminal, moron, traitor, idiot...on and on". The population of the US has become rude, mannerless, and disrespectful.
I have lived through many elections, but this is the first one that has become this hyped and ugly. It has polarized the population. The underhanded tricks and name calling on both sides stun me.
The population of the US is very much "on edge". Just look at the news. Yesterday, a man stabbed his wife in the neck and killed her, at a local community college. His reason was that he didn't want her to get custody of their four children. Now he's going to prison and the four children will go to foster care. I would have to say he didn't think this one through. A father killed his wife and stabbed his 8 year old son in the stomach. The 8 year old survived it and called 911 to report that his daddy had killed him. A man drove his car on the sidewalk, nearly running down a group of women carrying signs. His reason was he wanted to "scare the protesters" who were making traffic go slower. A voter registration canvasser was paid in crack cocaine for all the new applications he collected.
In the past four weeks I have had two patients totally melt down in the chair and had to send them for psych evaluations immediately...and I'm a dentist! The melt downs had nothing to do with dentistry or me. I have not had this happen in the 20 years I have been practicing. The pressures of life have become unbearable for some.
Yesterday I found myself humming the song lyrics "Blow up the tv. Throw away the paper. Move to the country... Build us a home. Plant a little garden. Grow alot of peaches..."
I think we could all benefit from putting the media in the proper perspective. Big money from both sides turns the wheels. We could all benefit from simplifying our lives and taking a break from the media. Turn off your tv. Don't read the paper. Go hug your horse and get back to the basics of good manners and respect for others. At the same time, respect for our current president and loyalty to our country is important.

See, deltawave, it's a funny thing about primaries. Sure a yellow dog democrat can say "ABB" BEFORE the primaries, but then, just like the Republicans, we all have to come together and responsibly nominate a candidate worthy of running this country (from the ship of fools who would actually WANT the job).
For all the rabid anti-Clinton sentiment in the Republican party in '96 and nominees worthy of much political humor, everyone got down to brass tack and nominated Bob Dole -an eminantly reasonable sort of person, in spite of the fact his sanity must immediately be questioned because he ran for the job).
So I do think the vast majority of yellow dogs in this country (OK, so Republicans never got themselves a cute moniker, but we will allow them to share ours for purposes of the argument) say stuff like that, but it's more to express vehement dislike for the policies of the other side. But let's not kid ourselves. I doubt many people would support Zell Miller on the dem ticket. Fortunately the primary system works, so we can all continue to amuse ourselves with edgy political humor AFTER the primaries if that's what rocks our boat.
But as Jon Stewart likes to point out, "this is the Comedy Channel, and this is fake news." Don't confuse this with reality.Your crazy is showing. You might want to tuck that back in.

Oakleigh - Wait a minute. I did not read your entire post. Yes, you are right about people being on edge. But respect for this president - why? Respect is something to be earned. This fellow is just one of those people born into the right families. He deserves very little respect from what I see. I guess he is a fun guy to party down with. Ok, for what that is worth. But otherwise I find him contemptible as a president. And loyal to our country includes critizing when necessary, not blindness to its faults.

Perhaps I should have said respect for the office of president. The current president earned respect just for having won the office. It's ok to vote either way. Voting him for 4 more years, or voting him out of office is fine. My contention is that the disrespect of calling someone a "moron, traitor, war criminal..." is only adding to the national stress. Civility is not expensive. We should all acquire some.

Um, no. I agree, name calling is juvenile and unnecessary, but by no means did Bush earn my respect just by being elected, and he has done nothing since to earn it, either. But, I didn't respect him BEFORE he was elected, either, while I do respect Kerry. Do I agree with everything he says? Of course not. But I DO believe he studies issues thoroughly and doesn't just mouth whatever his handlers tell him to, or won't if elected (the campaign trail is an enigma that doesn't show either candidate in a good light). I also believe he has respect for the rest of the world and the ability to work with them, which is imminently important to me.
Respect is ALWAYS something to be earned, not simply granted.Laurie

Reading through this thread, there is little to no chance to convince anyone to change their mind.
However, I have a fairly simple question:
What do you think will happen to the economy, fuel prices, jobs, health care, etc if the US is attacked like we were on 9/11?
I'm not saying there will not be another 9/11 type of attack in the States, but the way I look at it I want a commander in chief that wants to protect the U.S. I don't want someone who will give in to the United Nations and pass the 'global test' which John Kerry talks of. Fighting terrosim and not in our country helps to ensure the Unites State's freedom and security. If we aren't free and secure, then our economy will come to a skidding stop and we will be in another recession before you know it. Look at what happen to the airline industry after 9/11!
I don't agree with everything the president has done, however our security outweighs all other things at this point in time.

"pass the 'global test' which John Kerry talks of."
Did you even listen to the rest of the answer that this sound bite is pulled from? This is NOT what he said, and this just illustrates how so many of the voters are making decisions (on both sides) just by what the media deigns to highlight, or by what either candidate's handlers tells them to use as a new tag line.
There has been nothing said/done by Kerry that would indicate he would do anything less than Bush in protecting us, and MUCH to indicate that he would re-involve us with our allies, which IS vital in the world today, regardless of what the GOP wants you to think. You cannot go it alone.Laurie

Ditto HFSH. And, by the way, Massachusetts has a Republican governor. I won't get in to what he's done while in office in too much detail, but let's just say that he has driven up the costs of a lot of items and services that we use daily- and who pays for those increases in fees? Disproportionately, it's the middle class and poor. Seems eerily similar to what's happening on the national level, hmmmmmmm.....
