Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

I haven't done an official tally (sorry, spent the entire day at Imagine That with the wee ones - they are both now exhuasted and crying and I am not far behind ) - I'm up for something later Sunday, but not TOO late - let me read through the thread later and see what the majority says. CosmosMom, you have voted twice. What, are you from Chicago?????

If we're voting I also vote for Saturday or Sunday lunch. Lateish lunch is fine (1, 2, 3-ish) but dinner / evening time is going to be rough especially if Sunday is chosen just considering the drive / darkness / potential weather, etc.

And because lawndart is such a superb horse person, no one can fault her for a minor interpersonal faux pas. Besides, I find horses much more memorable than most people too.

It's my impression the weekend discussed is sometime in March. As I'm off to the other side of the world beginning Friday, I hope it's in March.

Sorry folks, I hadn't even seen this thread, DUH!!!

                Yep, I'd love to come.

Off topic, but nevertheless need to spit it out :
((I'm in desperate need of a break, after having been without water since last thursday, as not only watertank gave up but also well pump and apparently they now need to dig up electrics to 'new' well pump to get it all working. Sadly digging up our newly laid out driveway.
And now wondering whether I really needed the new watertank & pump, and if digging up electrics in the 1st place would have fixed the job .

To add to my pain, bldg inspector not giving approval on starting electrics for new barn, so.... sorry horses, you've got to stay in cold steel barn shed for time being....

And to finish darling husband's horse just spend 3 days at BW Furlong's clinic grade 5/5 lame, but looking up right now, especially since he's back home and resting in newly constructed little lameness paddock.

OH & even though we had a new septic tank installed 1st week of Jan, DHB is still snaking clogged toilets .............))

So yes pleeezzzee, break from it all, would love to get together.

Not sure if I know where on earth to find New Hope, but there's always mapquest .

I'll keep following this for dates & times.

                Lieslot.

                    The Votes Are In

The (huge/vast) majority are available on SUNDAY, MARCH 4th, with mid-afternoon (call it 3pm) seemingly the time of day that will work with the most number of folks. In general, folks seemed to think SOs might be bored - personally, I think it's your call - bring 'em if you like, leave 'em home if you don't. Although if KellyS comes withOUT Mr. KellyS, she shall be banished.

And there weren't any great outcries regarding the location, so shall we call it a day with The Triumph Brew Pub in New Hope, PA. See link for more info: http://www.triumphbrewing.com/indexfl6.html

As the date is so far in the future, I suggest the following for logistics: please email me (email in my profile - you can try PM, but my box tends to fill up) with your RSVP. That way we can call Triumph with an estimated number of attendees. I would appreciate your screen name and REAL name - just the first one (or whatever you prefer to be called) if you are uncomfortable sharing personal information.

I agree with lawndart that we should devise some way of IDing ourselves. I personally, do not even have photo albums for my children, though, so if you think I am making one for my Pony and bringing it, well, you've got another thing coming.

My first thought was that we should make it some kind of a game - whoever devises the most creative name tag wins some small prize. But. That might be silly. And I would never want to be accused of being silly. We can discuss and hopefully cooler heads will prevail.

PLEASE - pass the word along to PA/Jersians who have not checked out this thread!! I will try to go back and PM those who have been mentioned that they are invited - but MY FOLLOW THROUGH SUCKS. Big time. So please help.

And, so it shall be. This thread is going to fall off the page fast, so let's move it to email and then pop it back up closer to the scheduled event.

Looking forward to it - and glad we had such a huge response!

LOL! Well, I guess it's a good thing that he gets off work at 3pm--actually, he "serves and protects" in the township surrounding New Hope borough, so we could always get a good picture of all of us being arrested by the police. Nah, I'll tell him to leave the car, uniform, and handcuffs at work. See you all there!

Hey guys! I just got home from work (10 p.m.) and see you have figured out a date and time! Unfortunately, I can't commit on a Sunday just yet, because if there's extra work to do for my office, I do it on Sunday at home. I don't know until the Friday before what there is. Oh well...

Marta, I'm on Amwell Road near Rainbow Hill Road. My friend's daughter rides at Toy Box.

Sorry to get back to everybody so late, but I work a 10 hour shift and my commute, roundtrip, is almost 3 hrs. so it's a long day. Fortunately, I only do this on Mon, Weds, and Fri. Tomorrow is a barn day! I'd love to join you all if it's possible.
She wasn't running away with me, I just couldn't stop her!

Count me as a definite maybe. Right now the day is open but that is rare on my color coded calendar. Also I am a well known tee-totaler. But I eat just fine. I have sworn to never park in New Hope again (are you sensing anger issues?) because they are absolute Nazis with the meters. (When meters have a strong box attached so you can pay your fine immediately - RUN AWAY!)

If we have to wear tags with our screen name, I'm out. I really didn't have a clue when I signed in the first time. Nearly fell off my chair when someone called me Flying Hippo.

But other than that ... it sounds good. Can I bring my trainer/therapist/fashion coordinator/social director?

Small world! Mr. KellyS' horse Traveler (who I now ride) was originally purchased from Gael Gardner's farm--Aaron boarded at Toy Box originally and then moved to Barbara Hay's place (all right in that area).

Of course, that was all a kind of long time a go, but we still keep in touch with Gael who loves hearing about how Traveler is doing (going strong at 23).

To change the subject--we have to wear some kind of nametag so we have a face to go with a screen name! I know RR, Cosmosmom, and Jan/Caroline Weber, but don't have faces to go with the rest of the names here. But perhaps someone else can come up with a better idea.

ok here is my minimalist idea for id's

i'll bring a stack of post it notes and leave them at the edge of the table. each person takes a post it note, sribbles their user name and their real name (if different) on the post it note and stick it to their chest. voila!

                                horse photo albums optional.

RR - no problems identifying you since i think by now most of us have read your book at least once and can easily identify you and the pony (just don't do any abrupt hair style changes before the meet!).

this is pretty cool. i was always envious of the virginia people for having their annual get together.
