Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.
Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

called 911 on a tailgater today

Another late night haul in Toronto for us, another night of stupid drivers around horse trailers. I swear, I could film a documentary on what not to do when sharing the road with a horse trailer. Last night we were at a four way traffic light heading for a highway merger around 11pm, in the right of two lanes, and we hear revving engines beside and behind us. Light changes, and two little foreign models beside us peal rubber, joined by a third swinging out from behind our trailer to go around us in an attempt to gun down their buddies. I watched them continue to shift and zip between normal moving cars, narrowly missing bumpers left and right as the cars slam on brakes. Of course later when we hit slight traffic in a construction zone, we also got zipped by a pair of motorcyclist daredevils weaving slowed traffic
wft is with people??? There are times I'm praying there's a cop nearby.

dunno, a ton of steel careening down the road, piloted by an inconsiderate person is a possibly life threatening situation.Originally posted by spaghetti legs View PostI think calling 911 was extreme.. why not wait until you get home then ring the local cops. Someone with an actual life threatening emergency could have been trying to get through.

I called 911 on a pick up that was all over the road. Shoulder, left lane, right lane, no directional signal, no reason to be changing lanes. The woman driving almost hit me and appeared not to be aware of what she was doing, meaning no reaction, never turned her head, she was looking straight ahead. She was either having a medical crisis (perhaps a diabetic), asleep or drunk, although there was no head bobbing typical of the last two. I was behind her for about a few miles after she nearly hit me. I called the police to get someone to stop her, before she killed someone or herself and get her some assistance. The dispatcher thanked me.Originally posted by Jsalem View PostDon't agree with that. Perhaps the 911 operator will take swift action and have that tailgater pulled over- avoiding a serious accident.

The principal of my high school ended up resigning because he got caught tailgating this poor woman and took it so far he actually followed her to her house. She was mortified and dialed 911, good call because he ended up in a lot of trouble. I can't imagine having someone actually follow you home like that.
Has anyone ever tried turning on their flashers when someone's tailgating you? Not sure if it would be a good idea or help but it might convey the message that you have no intention of speeding up.

Talk about rude tailgater, I got tailgated while stopped for a train at a railroad crossing. The guy behind me thought it was very funny to deliberately stand on his accelerator, trying very hard to spook my horse while we were waiting for a very long freight train to pass. I really wanted to take his head off by the time the train went past. For some reason, I had a lot of trouble trying to find the gas pedal when the crossing was clear. My horse had better manners than that yahoo and was rock still during the whole time. I only wish he had propelled some natural fertilizer out the back!

I didn't even tell my SO about this bc he already thinks Im going to get killed (or get him into a fight) for my attitude while driving
But messing w/ me is one thing, however you mess w/ my pony's welfare and I will not hesitate to use that manure fork in ways it was never intended to.

Last week I was at a construction merge on a bridge. I had waited with the other cars for almost 20 minutes as we inched along. As I was going through the construction zone lined by Jersey Barriers, a car came out of nowhere on my right and almost drove into the side of my car to try to squeeze into a tiny space between the side of my car and the barrier. I couldn't move over to let him in because I was already in the merge area, and I did a tiny 'beep, beep,' in case the driver didn't see me. He must have driven in the breakdown lane to pass all the other cars behind me that had been waiting. I would have let him but there was no room. I've always taught my kids: on the road, don't look anyone in the eye and don't ever engage in or respond to aggressive behavior behind the wheel because there are a lot of nuts out there and it's not worth it.
He cut off the driver behind me and when I looked in the rear view mirror, I saw an twenty-something, enormous, scary looking man shaking his fist at me and screaming like a madman. I had my daughters in the car and I was terrified that he was going to rear end us or do something crazy. As soon as we got out of the merge, I pulled over to let him go past and he slowed down to scream at me and flash me a single digit message. He was so aggressive and insane and scary, I picked up my cell phone to call the police and when he saw that, he was gone like a rocket, veering through traffic to get away.
What a psycho. It is a jungle out there. Be careful.

A few years ago my pony broke his leg and had to be transported to the vet clinic about an hour from my house for surgery and all that good stuff. That part went just fine, and a week and a half later I was trailering him back home. Some stupid cow got behind me and had to be inches from the back of the trailer - heart was in my throat for my pony. We were on a 4-lane highway and whoever was in the left lane was going about the same speed as me. I was slowing down incrementally but so was the other car. Finally other car speeds up and cow behind me goes ahead and flies by, then cuts in front of me and SLAMS on her brakes. I about upended the trailer stomping on my brakes. Should have just rear-ended the evil witch - would have served her right. Of course meanwhile I'm frantic about Pony, who let us not forget has a broken leg and has a cast on almost to his stifle (right hind break). Pony was fine, I was livid. Was so terrified for him I didn't get her license plate. If I saw her now I would wring her neck.
Now, living in Chicago and driving my Wee Car around everywhere, I get tailgated more than ever. Other day I had a Jeep coolly sitting six inches off my bumper. Switching lanes did no good - she stayed right behind me! It seriously freaked me out. I ended up getting off and pulling over in a toll and she finally kept driving. It scared me.

Hi, and helo.
So many pranksters have been calling 911 on others to send them to hospital. Reason behind pranksters is that they can stay fully anonymous protective or don't have to stay present in hospital when the other patient wakes up. Often people end up ditching leaving troubles and violence to public communities that violates federal laws. Pranksters don't even pay portion of hospital bills, and gets charged 0 dollars for using ambulance, fire trucks, helicopters, and so on because 911 don't check caller's identification other than merely phone number. They don't even keep records of their driver's license.
Can you imagine getting billed immune $15,000 only because you fell asleep at a public park? No. You cannot.
Therefore, it became illegal.
Hope this helps.

When people tailgate me I just start going really slow. I don't drive slow myself and I usually keep up with traffic, but people where I am are always in a hurry. I love seeing them throw their hands out the window when I slow down and I think to myself well get off m a**! People don't understand hauling AT ALL either. Non haulers don't get that you need to break early and drive carefully with live cargo. One time I was driving through a residential and a lady walking jumped out right in front of me on a crosswalk. No way I could have stopped and she gave me the finger. Only people that haul understand that you can't just stop on a dime...at least without throwing your horse over the chest bar. Insert eye roll imogi.
