Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

    Cat/dog Sanctuary

I would first purchase the largest parcel of land I could find and open up a stray dog/stray cat sanctuary...Fence it all in and build houses all over. This way they could roam freely. Of course the cats would be separate from the dogs.

Give $$$$ to the ASPCA and other animal charities.

Buy my horse property and a trailer.

Gosh, you guys have those ginourmous lotteries in the US. Ours usually only go up to a few millions. I could spend 3 or 4 millions, but 325?

I really can't imagine what I'd do with 325 million. That is simply stupid amounts of money. I mean, I could probably spend about a million quickly, put another away for retirement, and maybe give a million to each of about a dozen relatives who probably don't deserve it, but what the hell.

Here's how I'd spend the first million or two:

Bulldoze my house and build something about the same size (1200 ft) but with all the modern conveniences. Like water pressure, for example, and more than one bathroom. That would be about a half mill.

Put up a combination building to house the indoor arena, the indoor swimming pool and the hubby's music studio, fully equipped. Another half mill or so.

OK, Let me buy a succesful, sound, young grand prix dressage horse. No, lets make that 3 of them, that would be another half mill. A trainer to keep them in shape- they make decent money, but I am sure another half mill would keep him on the property for 5 years or so.

A new car? naw. I love my SMART and they are only about $14K.

I think the other 300+ millions would just be given away.
Some to our local SPCA because they are a no-kill shelter.
Most to famine relief world wide through the Mennonite Central Committee, one of the few charities which actually gets the money to the people who need it.
Some to horse rescues locally and abroad.

I guess I lack imagination, my tastes are fairly simple.

It was 232 million..and yes, you end up with about a 3rd if you take the lump sum. Lump sum is half and then they take taxes. While it sucks, I do think I could be happy on 88 million dollars.

Ours is 33 million tonight, I plan on buying a ticket....I could be happy with 10 million dollars....got the farm already picked out.. And I'd still have 7 mil left.

            1. Financial planner, accountant, lawyer. ASAP.
            2. Do the LLC thing - great points, AiryFairy!
            3. Invest.
            4. Pay off parents' mortgage and bequeath them a large sum of money. Buy them new cars. Make it so my stepdad doesn't have to work at his very physically demanding job anymore and my parents can dawdle around doing whatever they want.
            5. Pay off brother's mortgage and bequeath large sum of money, buy him a new car too!
            6. Set up college fund for my (only) nephew.
            7. Buy self dream car
            8. Buy self large house on very large acreage and build large custom barn. Lure away current trainer from her barn and make her rich by training my 10 hand-picked, super amazing horses (one for every division! HA!). Also buy a dedicated packer horse I could get on and just go trail riding or pleasure riding on and not have to worry about him pitching a fit or being green or being crazy... can we tell I ride too many young, green, hot horses..?
            9. Buy a top-level eventing horse and go watch him/her compete in 4-stars.
            10. Pursue eventing properly - nice horses, great trainers, etc. I'm too poor to do it now!!
            11. Build my own, personal XC course - from BN to Advanced
            12. Rescue horses and set them up with new homes or in perma-retirement.
            13. Have lots and lots of staff so I could dabble in whatever struck my fancy and have zero responsibilities

All I need to do is buy the lotto ticket!! :P

Ya'll don't even worry your pretty heads about what to do with the money. I'm winning! LOL

First I would pay off my brothers' and my college/grad school tuitions.
Then I'd ship my fantastic horse to Massachusetts with me to play on the cross country fields and just have fun being a horse for the rest of his life.
I'd buy myself one or two really nice jumpers to learn and move up on and a pretty wooden barn to keep them in. I'd probably throw in a few nice horses for my friends too.
I'd buy myself and my brothers houses.
I'd also probably end up giving a lot of it away- to various charities and organizations. Can't have all that money without doing some good.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. Explore. Dream. Discover.

DH and I dream every time the pot gets big
                pay off parents farm
pay off parents new truck that they purchased to haul grand kids to shows
                college funds for 8 kids
buy bigger house ( 8 kids take up ALOT of room)
                buy a NEW Suburban
wait for the Pony Auction next year and BUY every pony I fall in love with ( ok maybe not everyone but most of them)
hire a tutor for the girls and spend all year traveling around the country showing ponies
Dh gets new sound equip and guitars, he is not that into horses so he can travel with us or stay home and play guitar and just fly in on the days the girls show.
My boys would all get new cars and a business to run and help support themselves
After that all I need is a nice hotel room each night we are away and enough money for a personal trainer so I can get rid of the weight I gained having 8 kids!!!!!
oh and we would of course SHARE with our friends and family and our local AC4H they are GREAT people who do wonderful work!

Keep dreaming, everyone. It will be even bigger for Tuesday! Of course, as DH pointed out...After $300 mil you could split the jackpot with 150 others, give the state it's half, and still be able to pay off everything and have some fun. If I can't have it all, I'm willing to split it with you guys.

                    fun....but I have expensive tastes!!! :/

Easement/trust stuff-love it! Would do it too, to protect against development...

Financial planner and my own personal accountant would be crucial!!!

I'd try to buy a working vineyard and keep all the employees, but shift/re-construct the existing villa to accomodate guests and build a barn w/ trails throughout the vineyard. Try to work w/ existing agri-tourism businesses to create a functioning 'vineyard trail' and open a B&B that does horseback vineyard rides. Own a small apartment in Rome or somewhere on the Amalfi coast. (Obviously I love Italia!)

I would want to use the money to invest/start successful small businesses that cater to the group of ppl who *always* have money.

Also, would love to hire Williams or someone to design another 3 or 4 star course and open a huge ass eventing facility for a classic 3-day event here in the States. Would LOVE to do that. *drool*

Pay parent's house/debts and sell their impractical house/land, set them up somewhere else. Give my dad the ultimate retirement situation. He's given me my already very nice life and he deserves the ultimate retirement!

Buy bk the horses I've had to sell and set them up for life in a huge, green pasture.

Continue w/ college but own an apartment right near school and retire my truck for farm duty-buy a little car-gas efficient, low emissions- to use in town. Hire someone to take my dog to a leash free park during the day and exercise him while I'm in class.

Pay for braces up front. Hire a nutritionist and a personal trainer. Board my horses nearby and ride them a few times a week when classes allow.

I have expensive tastes. This is why I'm not marrying a poor man. And also why I'm planning on multiple degrees.

That was way too much fun...

OH one other thing is that if my farm was big enough I would build a guest house for my mom and step-dad to move into. My step-dad would be able to do what he loves...working on a farm and not have to worry about money. Seriously this man would be thrilled if I provided him with the state of art bush-hogger and fields to mow.

I also would set up a couple of scholarships for college students in my old school. Not typical...kids who get the A's and do every sport.
