Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Hurricane/Tropical Storm Danny

I looked at the weather a little while ago and was shocked to see SE Virginia...and lots of populated areas and Eastern NC in the strike range of a Cat 1 hurricane as soon as Saturday. Holy Smokes...where did this thing come from? Looks like New England could be in for some fun too...still a hurricane by Sunday a.m. and it it follows a more westerly path, it could graze the East Coast from Jersey to Maine... Oh what fun...

We are making preps here for a lots of rain and wind and power outages. I hope it misses all of us. I just wanted to point this out as it sure surprised me when I looked at the weather a little while ago.

What is your prep plan if you don't mind my asking? Why can't we have cool storm names like Hurricane Snuffaluffagus?
Thus do we growl that our big toes have, at this moment, been thrown up from below!

      DB -

The VA Horse Council had a program where you could sign up your farm as an evacuation point if needed.

I signed my place up last year or the year before - but I heard nothing more about that program or how that information is made available to the public in time of need.

If I remember correctly, there was some master plan that was being devised by the VAHC in the case of a coastal evacuation but I never heard anything about it beyond the initial discussion and search for potential relocation sites.

Uh LexInVA - Do you by any chance know Carol Kozlowski of Avon NY who events an intermediate horse by that name!

If not, never mind but it just struck me funny that you used Snuffaluffagus as an example.

I don't know anyone in NY. Well, nobody I like anyway.

Lex, if you knew Carol, you would like her very much. I'm sure Daydream Believer would back me up on that for sure.

Our prep plan? Well, we make sure anything that can blow around is secured...we get the generators prepped and ready. Get stalls bedded down if we are bringing in extra horses. Make sure we have enough feed for the horses, dogs and us on site to last a while if we get stranded here by fallen trees and flooding. I was told in Hurricane Floyd our area was an island and you were unable to go anywhere. We get our chainsaw out and check it over, fill up extra gas tanks, and top off the farm diesel tank. Worst case I can run my diesel pickup off that if I can't find a gas station with power to run the pumps. We have a diesel tractor and a gator also and are trying to find a good diesel generator as well. I will move the horse trailer to a sheltered area also.

We are on high ground thankfully and about 40 miles inland but Hurricane Isabel made a real mess of this area a few years ago. Power was out around here for a month.

I'm a bit surprised at how short a notice we are getting. Usually these storms they are watching a week or so out.

I have one of the only concrete block barns in this area but I have barely enough room for my own horses without becoming an official shelter....and have neighbors asking if they can bring horses over as it is. I have about 28 in pasture with three sided shelters and, 9 boarders in stalls and 22 stalls in the main barn. Someone will have to double up as it is or be penned in our aisle which is doable....and 6 of those outside horses are foals at their dam's side. A cat 1 doesn't have me too worried about horses outside getting hurt by debris but it is a concern...tornados spinning up a fear also.

If your horse trailer is not covered separately from your tow vehicle, this is a good time to get it covered. Remember what happened to Silverwood farm a few years ago? They had a tornado come thru their farm off one of the hurricane's remnants, destroy a very expensive horse trailer, and then found out it was not covered as it was just parked and not in use.

Carol is a wonderful person and a great coach. I loved working with her. I wish she'd move to this area! We are hopelessly devoid of good eventing coaches in this part of VA.

Welcome to August in the Western Atlantic/Carribean!!!

Storms frequently form in this area and can be quite strong, although they don't have that much time over warm water so they don't usually get as impressive as the storms from waves off the coast of Africa.

They can also "blow up" very quickly in the Gulf of Mexico (as lots of Texans and folks from the Yucatan can tell you).

I've personally been through five hurricanes (including one aboard ship). They are not pleasant experiences, but if you live above the high water mark and take reasonable precautions you can do OK. If you live in a flood zone then you have some choices, but they're all pretty bad.

Horses are more resilient than many think and I'd likely not try and evacuate my stock (I've got 11 on the premesis). I'd ensure that my fences were up and I'd use a Dremel tool (or something like it) to put my phone number on one or more hooves.

Additional prep. would be to ensure I had gas for the generators; all vehicles (including tractors) were fully fueled; I'd formulate a menu of food that could be quickly and easily prepared (and ensure all ingredients were on hand); make sure the wine celler were secured; and then make a trip to library to get some good books.

Hurricanes are part of the price we pay for living in Paradise, I guess!

                        G.

P.S. I live in East TN so the worst we'll see is a bunch of driving rain and maybe some thunderstorms (with rare tornados).

DB, not a whole lot of help but Carol spends a couple of months (Feb and March) in Aiken, SC. That's a bit closer than NY.

Trust me...Suffolk Virginia is a long way from Paradise! It's hot, steamy, muggy and buggy for half the year and the other half it is raining, windy, and cold. We do have nice sunsets here...and the beach is not too far away...and the occasional visit from a bear out of the Dismal Swamp.

Well, that's easy. Just imagine for a moment the local (ok, read southern- I'm from SC, so I can point fingers!!) meterologists trying to read that off the teleprompter. It would be so entertaining that people would be hoping for hurricanes!!!

I'm with you on the short notice thing DDB (hey just realized your intials are same as my screen name). Think this thing just formed closer then they usually do. I think the good part is it shouldn't get very strong - their expecting max at cat 1 and for it to stay off shore.

I'm here on the coast - Va Beach- so any plans to leave here need time. Have to go through tunnels most ways out. Isabel was one that we were leaving until it downgraded. We had no power for 10 days , but no damage or flooding.

I will check out VAHC (thanks LexInVA) to see if they have evacuation barns close, but out of harms way.

ddb...we're practically neighbors! Nice to meet you. I'm pretty sure the show complex down in Edenton, NC, is an evac center as well as the Richmond Fairgrounds.

Looks like the latest projections now have it missing us and headed for Massachusetts and Maine. Folks up that way need to batten down the hatches and get ready. It looks like it will be a Cat 1 when it makes landfall. No fun.
