Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    • Awww...he looks great. Especially given that it's only been a month. How is Shay getting on in her new home?

Shay seems very happy. I drive by her frequently on my way to the grocery store. I talked to her new owner and he said his grand daughter loves her. She has been riding her and they are both pleasantly surprised by how well trained she is.

          • [QUOTE=ptownevt;2170807]I just love this thread!!!! What a difference in just a month! Amazing, truely just a case of not feeding him.

Oh, no..he WAS being fed! However, it was PIG feed, no shit! The worker there told me he was giving them "kibble" - he was not a horse guy, but working in the kennel. Hay? What's that? He hadn't seen any. I hope this guy hasn't lost his job we agreed he would pretend he never saw me when the state showed up for my complaint - he knew the horses were skinny, but didn't realize Rocky was close to XXXXX and was very concerned.
I mention his job because he was employed on the dog grooming/boarding side of these peeps biz, and fed the horses as an aside. Anyhoo, I have heard several horror stories about this place for dogs, and hope this guy can find a decent place to work, if he has lost his job. He has a big heart - just wasn't familiar with heese enough to know that Rocky was on his last leg.

Well, I climbed up on old Rocky today. He seemed in a particularly good mood today and so I brought out some tack and tried it on him. When he didn't object to this I figured today was the day. I took him to the arena where he stood like a statue while I mounted. I rode for about 10 - 15 minutes total. He was such a good boy. He has a nice springy but not bouncy trot and he picked up both canter leads easily and was very balanced and comfortable. I was very pleased with him. Now that I know how nice he is to ride, I'll start slowly getting him into condition. I feel so lucky to have rescued this horse. Hopefully by spring he will be up for some short trail rides.

              • bird - that is just WONDERFUL! i am also SO GLAD that you rescued him!

reminds me a little bit of my cocker spaniel rescue dog. i got him at a "last chance" offering, if i hadn't taken him that day, he was going to be put to sleep. that was four years ago and i swear he is the best dog i have ever had. he's a real family dog, loves everyone and loves nothing better than to have the whole family together. everyone loves him, too. what a waste if he'd been pts.

keep us updated, and next time get someone to take your photo while you are up there! i am so excited that he picked up his canter lead changes! don't you just wonder who trained him and how he ended up in such dire straits?

                      • Oh, gawd.....now I CAN'T resist! Bird4416 rode him first [have I mentioned how brave she is? she got on Shay first, too, not knowing anything about the background...but she's no dummy - she did it meticulously and safely - and she knows heese!] and he's fine, as I thought he would be just based on his personality (but thx Bird for finding out!) Did I mention my soft spot for chestnut TBG's? (Thunder, don't worry, I loff you too!) My biz better take off soon, 'cause I think I may buy a horse [Rocky]...
Of course, that is a big leap to take...perhaps Bird will want to keep him!

They have two horses that live in their front yard with acccess to an old barn to get out of the weather. Last winter, one of the horses got pretty skinny. You could see prominent hip bones and ribs. The other horse stayed in good flesh. Over the summer the skinny horse put on weight and got a nice shiny coat and looked pretty good.

Yesterday, I noticed the one horse has lost a bunch of weight again and looks as bad now as he did at the end of the winter last year. I'm afraid he will have a hard time this winter if he has already lost this much weight this early. The other horse again, looks just fine. Obviously, the one horse must be older or have some other problem that causes him to lose weight while the other horse maintains his weight.

How to I approach this problem? Should I call animal control or an equine rescue? Should I approach them myself? I don't want to alienate my neighbors but something needs to be done for this horse. As I said earlier, the horses live in the front yard on a road that gets a good bit of traffic so I know other people have seen this also.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Speak first to your neighbors - they are YOUR neighbors and you will have to live next to them for awhile so try talking with them. You would be surprised how many people don't realize what it takes to keep a horse during the winter (extra feed/beet pulp, whathaveyou...) and a civil conversation and offer to help will go a long ways to keep your neighbors GOOD neighbors.

Just express concern about the poor horse and offer to help - (draw up a feed program, suggest a vet exam, offer to help them find the right feeds if it is an old horse, etc.). Don't come off Holier than Thou but just as a caring, horseowner - even a good old gal if you have to, and make sure that you aren't criticizing the care of the horse. Offer to go to the feed store with them to pick out feeds, offer the name of your hay guy..whatever.

They may be unaware (clueless) about why that horse loses weight so maybe explain that XX breeds need more feed in the wintertime..

Get my drift. Getting along with neighbors is hard enough, but calling authorities before talking to the neighbor first will not promote a good feeling.

On the other hand, if you do this and they blow you off, don't take your advice, etc. you have options as we say: offer to buy the horse. If you don't want the horse and can't afford the horse, you can in a round about way, suggest that the horse be donated to a rescue, etc.

If all fails and these neighbors just won't listen to reason...then pull out the big gun and call your local humane org. or the state or whomeever you need to call.

Having always had neighbors - I have a neighbor who had a dog that she kept chained in her yard. Poor little dog had no house, was chained to a telephone pole with it's water bucket always turned over and really was a mess.

I went over after observing said hound being in the cold, sleeting rain and stood just outside the doorstoop where said neighbor had to come out on the sidewalk to talk to me. Pouring sleet, cold as crap, she's standing there shivering and we start discussing said dog.."ya know, that dog of yourn is looking pretty miserable now that it's winter time"..she said "well it's a dog, they stay outside". "yep..guess that's why the poor thang is shivering like that..no house to get in.." reckon you'd care if I brought you a doghouse for the dog? She said "aw she kin get under that car if she's cold".."yep, she could except her chain is wrapped around that pole about ten times and she can't move more'n three feet so how's she gonna git under that car?"

Ding, Ding Ding - lightbulb moment...for the neighbor.."oh I see what ya mean, uh you got an extra doghouse I could borry?" "yep I says..I'll run up ta that house and git it, but you gotta fix that dog a pen when it quits sleeting." Oh Lord..a pen..money, time, effort. "A pen, why she gotta have a pen if'n she's got a house?" Well that there is a pup and pups are kinda like kids, need some room to roam about and stretch their legs, sides how can she protect you if she's chained like that?".

Needless to say, I spent two days slamming posts in the ground with my neighbor so that dadblamed hound would have a pen..but I noticed a bit over time that she started taking pretty good care of the mutt, and she's still my neighbor and will occasionally walk up the driveway to my place and ask me stuff about "Rosie" like "all these boy dogs are hanging 'round fightin and carryin on and Rosie is howling all the time" then we discussed getting Rosie spayed..and course neighbor was all for not having no more dadblasted dogs around, so I got her a spay certificate from my vet and she carried Rosie off to get her "fixed"..no more problems with boy dawgs..Rosie has turned into a pretty nice dog and the neighbor takes real good care of her now. But it takes a step to get a step..

So try first being a good neighbor and then if that don't work, then call the authorities.

Works well some of the time and you can sleep better knowing you tried.
