I just want to say thank you to you all...It means so much to us, there are just no words.
Last night, about an hour before we were to go pick him up, my cell phone rang and the words "restricted" displayed on the ID. The only time that happens is when Cornell calls. I was fearing the worst of course, and the worst it was.
He took a very sudden and serious turn for the worse. His little body just couldn't take the stress. We had planned to bring him home and give him fluid and electrolyte support until he passed but he just couldn't do it. He was failing fast and we were no going to make it in time, I couldn't make him wait for us to say goodbye...that is selfish. So he was euthanized surrounded by the always so compassionate and incredible staff at Cornell. I know they made his last minutes gentle and kind. He did not suffer, and he would most likely have just gone to sleep but again...
Kurt Fisk, our farrier, is covering the shop for Mike Wildenstein this week and we had him come and put his special shoe on to save him a trip out to the farm. I am so glad he had a brand new one to cross the bridge with...he will need it for all the running he will be doing with all his new friends in Heaven.
Godspeed little old man...you changed my life. You were my very first horse and worth every day of that 41 year wait. Every day of those 8-1/2 months you were here you loved us completely and we loved you so, so, very much.
I cannot thank Lori at Sunkissed enough for posting him on the giveaways. Through Dumplin' so many WONDERFUL things have happened. Special Horses, Inc. was formed, our EEA/T program is budding, tons of little kids with special needs and others have gotten their first experience with a horse thanks to Dumplin'. The other gifts are just too numerous to mention.
Dr. Hartman said to me on the phone as we were driving to Cornell. "Colleen it is going to be an easy trip for Dumplin' to get to Heaven, because he already had it here on earth with you".
I am so grateful we did everything in our power to spoil and love him so completely. You really never know how long you will have them.
So today, if you would, think of Dumplin' by sharing a marshmallow or peep, or his new favorite...cheese doodles (the kind with honey BBQ
) with your horses and think of my little old fart
And please, if you can spare it...send Lori at Sunkissed a dribble in Dumplin's name so that maybe another one of "unadoptables" that might find their way there can have the same chance Dumplin' did.
Thanks all...again, it has meant so much to us to have you here. I know your jingles, prayers and hugs surrounded Dumplin' to the very end of his life.
