Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

The downside is that I used to think people were mostly good. Now I assume they are stupid till they prove otherwise.

To give you an idea of the types of stoopid we get. We had to send the fire department out to help a woman who was locked INSIDE her car...yes INSIDE!!! that's funny - though it struck me that the stoopidest person involved is the car. I mean, why go into hysterics if someone is trying to get OUT? Last night I got a call from a gentleman who had a car for sale. The car didn't run. Dude comes to look at the car, asked for the keys, would not start. Dude goes and gets a battery, then asked to take car to his house to work on it, without transferring title. Dude never returns with the vehicle to transfer the title and now it's been 2 weeks.Originally posted by LoriO View PostDitto this!!! I agree people are stoopid until proven otherwise. Pseudo-administration at a large, urban high school. My background is teaching math, but I have my administration degree and now work in support services. Mainly, I work with teachers to help them improve their teaching practice, analyze data and help develop & implement new programs to improve our students' achievement. Basically "Other duties as assigned"!
I love my summers, and that I am off by 3:30 every day. I can ride and be home before DH most days.A proud friend of bar.ka.

I <3 numbers
I am a staff accountant at a mid-sized CPA firm in a small town. The hours are 8-5 M-F most of the year. We work 8-5 M-F & Sat 8-12 Jan through April 15th. BUT from Memorial Day to Labor Day we only work 8-5 M-Th and 8-12 on Friday to make up for tax season craziness.
I get to ride everyday if I so choose.
I actually am starting a new job in a new town the middle of September. My new title will be Senior Accountant (I got a HUGE raise (think double)!
) at a hospital, actually it is a system of about 10 hospitals. The hours are 8-5 M-F with full benefits and more paid timeoff. I am not sure how riding will work (timewise) but I will have more money to show so I am excited.
Background: I have a BS in AgriBusiness and an MBA (finished it in May). I have 5 classes until I can sit for my CPA, which I plan on taking online so I can get my CPA
I was always a math nerd in school so I am now putting it to good use. I would love to go to law school and practice Tax Law but I am unsure if that is in my future b/c the SO is planning on starting vet school (food animals) next fall.

Another graduate student checking in. I am going into my fourth year in my PhD program studying Human Factors Psychology - I specialize in training systems. I have a research fellowship working for a government research agency which is a 20hr/week position during the Fall and Spring and 40hrs/week in the summer. I actually started riding again after several years off in my first year of grad school and it is what keeps me going. When I finish my PhD I will probably try to find a research job in either a government agency or industry.

I work in Inter-library Loan and Cataloging in a college library - my hours are 7:30-3:30, which would be fantastic if I actually had a horse, but I'm unfortunately in eastern MA, which has THE most insane board prices I've ever seen! So no horse for me. I did start taking lessons again after many years off, and I've found that getting off work earlier than most people means I have lessons at a time when the barn isn't TOO overrun with other lessons and boarders coming to ride.

Work as a sales rep for a manafacturing company. Job isn't very interesting at times, but the pay is good, and I get to travel a lot.
ETA- I'm also involved in Operations. So if something in the building breaks, I'm the one who gets to make phone calls and get it fixed. It started out as a temp thing, covering for illness, but I seem to be stuck with it!
Keeps life interesting though.

I'm a marketing manager for a large insurance company. Interesting sometimes because I get to use my creative side, but lately I've been feeling a little dissatisfied...could be all the crazy re-structuring and re-orgs we've gone though (thankfully I am still employed) or it could be that I am essentially marketing a product that couldn't be more boring if it tried.
I've actually started the grad school application process. I have a degree in Literature and would like to teach High School English. Total career change, and a pay cut, but I know I would enjoy it more. And it would give me free time over the summers to ride and show :-)

Graphic Designer (RGD) at a major pharmaceutical advertising agency. We do a lot of facial aesthetics design work for Botox, for example, along with products that are coming onto the market to compliment it (Soft Lift, Juvederm, etc). There are LOTS of "Before and After" photo shoots!
In addition, we handle work for anti-depressants, hospitals, neurosciences, several eye-care products, and other brands that I can't legally mention. During our "off season" we take on significantly more fun and creative pieces to keep us designers happy, and function as a regular studio.

I'm an independent Financial & Administrative Consultant - I currently have 3 clients, all government contractors, all involved in things like CyberSecurity, which means business is good
I can work for two clients from home; the other wants me to report, but the hours are very flexible. It's a nice gig, but I had to pay my dues to get here, I did the report to office M-F thing steadily for 15 grueling years +/- My clients have seen my name around for most of two decades and so trust me with their confidential records and to get the job done.
I'm making more money now than I did as a full time CFO, but it can be scary being self employed - no paycheck, just monthly invoices that you pray you don't have to get aggressive about collecting on, can buy my own health insurance but I've found it is impossible to get Long Term Disability insurance on one's own the minute one mentions "horse", lol.
The good thing is I don't have all my irons in one fire now, and having realized job security is a thing of the past, it's kind of nice to be depending only on myself, my skills, & ability to solicit & satisfy clients.
I don't relish working with numbers, spreadsheets, accounting databases, & political suits all day, but I am reconciled as I've realized its the best way for me to a) pay off the farm mortgage & afford some toys along with my horses and b) have time to ride said horses & take care of small farm.

PS I read every post on this thread so far, what a bunch of interesting people we are. And I for one vote that those two police dispatchers have to entertain us with more stories about the STOOPID people on the next off-topic day, I have a feeling they are gold mines of hilarity!

I'm still laughing about the guy driving the car to his house to "work on it".
My day job is that of an agricultural extension agent and I'm working on my masters degree in soil science. Low level pay and low level of appreciation
My horse is in semi-retirement but I could probably make it out to the barn 3-4 times a week with no problem if I was motivated. I usually head out 1-2 times a week to check on him - more so in the winter when I'm riding more."Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil, and you're a thousand miles from the corn field." --Dwight D Eisenhower

Wow! It's cool to see so many University professors and grad students on here as lately I've been considering throwing school back into the mix and heading off into the world of Academia.
But... until then...
Mornings I work at a large boarding facility and evenings I work as a technician for Cirque du Soleil.
And people laughed at me when I declared my Equine Science/Technical Theatre double major back in the day! HAH! Pick a "real" major they said...
Well I did. :-p
:-)The ninja monkeys are plotting my demise as we speak....

I am a chartered accountant in a smaller town. Hours are flexible. I generally work 8 to 4 and take my lunch at my desk. From January until the end of April we are really busy, so work longer hours and Saturdays.
I love the flexibility and if I am going to have a busy season winter time works for me. We are slower in the summer, so if I was showing I would be able to get the needed time off.

I know what that is! But that could be because I work for a 3rd party money manager......anybody know what that is? Basically I work with a bunch of people that contact financial advisors that use our services to tell them what they did wrong, and tell them how to fix it. Honestly anybody that does investing would be appalled by the number of mistakes and trade corrections are done on their account without them ever knowing, directly caused by their paid financial advisor. Hours are good, 6am-3pm, but there is a 7-4, and an 8-5 shift as well. Hate the job, not fond of the company, but generally like the co-workers. I am currently looking for something else, but know these markets are bad and will definately be looking before I leap!Originally posted by myvanya View PostI do back office work for a broker-dealer firm...if you know what that means....well...that is pretty impressive.
