Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

    Yeah, I figured as much

I knew about the new Dan Synder deal, but to move here to VA? I can't believe they would build a movie studio here but who knows.

Red Hunter you are correct on which farm it is, but it is not under "contract" right now it is Contingent no kick out with a fesiblity study that end on Oct 6th, 2006 then it will either to go contract or back to active if it does not go through. I checked the system today and did not see Huntland. Will go check again. I also see the farm on Canterbury in Warrenton is under contract too..another Gorgeous horse farm and it also has a fesiblitly study, so I'm wondering if he does not have two under contract right now.

::snort:: That is one of the biggest - and most egregious - cases of flipped estates I've seen! Yes, lovely home but the owners (who live in M'burg) have in their actions have become profiteers with zero respect deserving IMHO.

        Norsire,

Go check the Armfield, Miller & Ripley website. If you look at the description of the property of Llangollen it matches exactly the description of the article that states the Cruise is buying property: $22 million, seven ponds, training track, orchard and formal gardens (location: Upperville).

Here is link as of 5:30 p.m. today their site has the property listed as UNDER CONTRACT

Hey Norsire, I was around with Robert Duvall at that same time! I remember the horse TC bought him well. Kitty Beveridge was the agent, I believe. I never understood what possessed them to pick THAT horse. They guy who was helping Robert with his jumping instruction (who we were friends with) rode the horse in some local schooling shows (FPP and others). I was not impressed with the horse. But the thought was nice. That was right at the Days Of Thunder filming. Do you remember Robert's horse, Woodrow? Big bay, not sure of his breeding, think he might have been an auction special. I think our trainer friend bought him for RD. I liked him!

What's the name of the farm TC bought? I may not remember it, it's been so long since I lived around there.

The deal isn't for a movie studio.

First and Goal LLC, headed by the Washington Redskins owner, will provide development and overhead financing for the actor's firm, Cruise/Wagner Productions for two years, with an option to renew after that. Paramount had the same deal for 14-years but didn't not pick up the option to renew.

If I recall correctly Paramount was on the hook for $10M a year in funding and Snyder's offer is something well under $5M/year.

Films developed by Cruise/Wagner Productions include War of the World, Mission Impossible (and the sequal), Minority Report, and The Last Samurai among others.

Least we forget that Days Of Thunder had Cruise and Robert Duvall together and Robert's place in The Plains isn't too far away ...

              Sorry Red Hunter...

Red Hunter, I know what their personal web site says..but in the Real world of Real Estate and the MRIS system that all agents use, it is contingent no kick out until Oct 6th, 2006, if it is indeed "under contract" then they have not updated the data in the MRIS system to next read "Contract" with a settlement date listed. I know this maybe confusing if you are not a REALTOR. And Huntland was withdrawn on Sept 20, 2006 which is three days after LLongallon went under contract as contigent no kick out. So, Roy must not have wanted to sell both farms and now that one is "under contract" he wants to keep the other. I really am just wondering if he will have horses there or if he is going to do something else with that gorgeous horse farm. I hate to see another beautiful farm be turned into a resort or something else like a bunch of houses on a few acres each...that's all. Red Hunter if you send me your e-mail I can e-mail those listings to you..they are public record and you can see the status yourself.

                WOW!!! :googly eye emoticon:

I just looked at the pics of that place online. If I had 22 million dollars, I promise I would have all of my fellow COTHers over for tea and crumpets to my fabulous estate. I feel like I should be wearing a hoop skirt a la Scarlett O'Hara if I live there though. I would also insist on riding sidesaddle to go get the mail.

I had posted this - when the property first was listed - under the Hunting board as I wondered if the property was used in the local hunt as Huntland has been, on occasion. No one seemingly knew the answer although I suspect not.

Regarding development of the property I would have to suggest stepping back for the a moment and thinking about it. Why in the world would an actor want to develop a property and put the public any closer to himself? That would be the last thing! You can't physically get near the main house so its perfect for seclusion. Roy Ash bought the property at auction in 1989 from would-be developers. The property today is used for cattle - it is not an equestrian epicenter by any means - although he's invited a few carriage meets there at the estate.

It really hasn't been used for jumpers and the like since Liz was actively riding. Afterwards she kept her race horses there a few of which were Derby entrants but not top flight contenders

From Time Magazine Nov. 20, 1939 - yes 67 years ago, an article on Madison Square Garden:

Because 75% of the hunters and jumpers exhibited at U. S. horse shows nowadays are ridden by women, the spotlight focused on the jumping Jills.

Most famed U. S. jumping Jill is Mrs. John Hay ("Jock") Whitney, a spirited, devil-may-care rider who has been winning blue ribbons on the horseshow circuit for 15 years. Before her marriage to Croesusrich young Whitney in 1930, Mary Elizabeth ("Liz") Altemus was well known in the hunt country around Philadelphia. After acquiring the 2,200-acre, million-dollar "Llangollen" estate near Upperville, Va., Liz Whitney became the most glamorous horsewoman in the U. S. Her drawing-room gum-chewing, social-worker hairdo, haphazard clothes were aped by many lesser socialites. Her riding technique became the very pattern for aspiring horsewomen. Her money-fed horses were the envy of the show-ring. Two years ago at the National she rode her Grey Knight to three blue ribbons in one day and wound up with the hunter championship.

Last week, after virtually deserting show rings for a year (while hobnobbing with Hollywood folk), Liz Whitney reappeared at Madison Square Garden. To the galleries' shouts of "Come on, Liz!" she rode four of her entries. But at week's end, no Whitney horse" had qualified for the championship final.

Maybe his friend, Steven Spielberg, will suggest they get into racing

Steven bought a one-tenth stake [for $500k] in 2003 Kentucky Derby runner "Atswhatimtalknbout" via "Biscuit Stables LLC". Of course that was the year of Funny Cide and Atswhatimtalknbout finished 4th in the Derby.

You know the only thing I wish and believe me I have seen much lower priced homes I have thought/said this about..............I hope they look at their home and property and realize just how lucky they are to be able to live in such a great place, for many of us only dream of such a place. Actually I think this about homes around me priced in all ranges but have found many in the 350 range that fit well into dreaming land and are incrediably beautiful with a decent amount of land, not a 1000 but 30 or 40. As in sSxteen Candles quoted maybe not completely acurate "I bet the people that live there don't think this is anywhere near as pretty as I do". I won't comment on Tom, why bother
