Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Yes tinting can go horribly wrong. A friend of mine got hers done and somehow the dye leaked under her lower lashes. It looked like she had two black eyes for awhile.

how you put on mascara can make a difference. A makeup artist at a photo shoot told me the best way to keep it from smudging is to dust your eyelashes lightly with facial powder, then put on a light coat of mascara. Wait for that to dry, then put on another coat.
Yep that really works. Also I used an old toothbrush to brush them out. My friend uses a pin to seperate the lashes. I'm sure that would result in blindness if I tried it.

You're a goddess! I was just trying to figure out a way to ask if anybody had any water/sports proof foundation, but didn't want to get nuked on this board.

When you reach a certain age, girls, and you have gone all your life ignoring your mother's oh-so-helpful advice about wearing hats and sunscreen, you get mottled skin. Uck. So, not only do I wear sunscreen, I wear foundation with sunscreen in it. And waterproof mascara. And, God forbid, I've been known to slap on some lip gloss so that when I go through the gate check (I live on a military post), I don't look like I've been doing precisely what I've been doing, which is playing with horses in 95 degree heat and humidity.

Does this make me vain? A drag queen? Nope. I feel better about myself when I don't look like an ad for the harmful effects of the sun.

Your advice is dead on!!! I have always used sunscreen and worn foundation b/c it has sunscreen in it as well.

Result - I look a good 10 years younger than I actually am (blessing and a curse) - and I am vain enough to want to look my best. Its my inner and outer Diva at work.

And, quite honestly, I don't worry too much about what armchair warriors think/feel about me - I'm okay with who I am and myself is the only person I have to please.

Maybelline Define-A-Lash. Heck you can even wear it while swimming and it won't come off.

Make Up For Ever's new Aqua Smoky Lash is a really good waterproof mascara, if you want to go for a pricey one. Otherwise, Maybelline's Volum'Express Waterproof in the solid light blue/grey tube is excellent! (DO NOT buy the Turbo stuff, it's terrible!)

I use good ol' cold cream to remove waterproof mascara. Cheap and efficient.

I consider the use of mascara for myself in the same way that I might use hoof polish for my horse - for that extra little touch that makes us look finished and complete. I also like to wear little pearl earrings in dressage and in the hunter ring (since I fail miserably at hunter hair).

Of course more often than not, the green slime on my white breeches reveals us for the hopeless cause that we truly are. But at least I try!!

LOVE the body shop stuff!! The liquid works just as well as the cream, too. I'm also cheap and make it to WalMart more than I do the Body Shop, so I currently use the Neutrogena stuff in the purple bottle. Doesn't sting and works really well!

I still haven't found my "holy grail" of waterproof mascaras. Probably because I am too lazy to take it off, so I like normal mascara. I love Chanel Inimitable, I will have to try the waterproof version, and maybe the dior.

Hahaha!! Green slime is too true!! Just last night I had to be at a dinner just about the same time I feed, so of course showered, dressed, then fed and put the horses out in my dress and muck boots (changed those before dinner) I thought I was so smart until I got to the dinner and someone helpfully pointed out the horsey kiss on my back!!!

                        Had to add:

At the risk of being a Pollyanna I just had to add:

To any hurtful or unkind remarks...this is a place for support and I'm so thankful for the times I've had horsey or training questions and people have been so kind to take their time to answer.

Also, as a private farm owner who also must work, and doesn't have time to get together with horsey friends, I'm thankful for the board community.

As the Beatles profoundly said, "All you need is love," and mutual respect!

To make-up or not to make-up: Such a trivial thing.

Now if I were to get on here and say," Hey, I just used a cattle prod to get my horse on the trailer..." THEN you could flame me

"morally opposed to wearing makeup" ???????

Really?? I'm morally opposed to abusing animals and children, stealing, and inciting mayhem, but makeup?? sheesh

Another vote for Maybelline waterproof, and also Revlon makes a sweat-proof light foundation with sunscreen, "Colorstay Light" I think that works very well. Trick is to blot your face throughout the day, don't wipe. I carry paper towels in my pocket, pull one out, blot blot, so when I take my nasty sweaty helmet off and replace with ball cap, I am still reasonably cute and presentable. As others have pointed out, if I take the trouble to groom, polish, and braid my horse so he looks his best, why wouldn't I do the same for me?

I wondered how a simple request for mascara turned into what, 4 pages?

Oh, wait, it's COTH, I should have known LOL

I really like Maybelline waterproof in dark brown, the black is too harsh for me. It comes off well enough with soap and water, but a dab of Oil of Olay will finish it off well. I sweat a LEETLE too much to doll up at a show but I can manage mascara and lipstick.

I don't wear makeup everyday, wearing none today and I'm at work. Might slap on some lipstick when I go out, I feel more dressed with it on, I have thin lips and I feel more put together (think Mr Potato Head) if one can actually see my lips for a change LOL! NOTE- I don't think about whether ANYONE is noticing me, I do it FOR me. And for the SO who notices if I come home wearing lipstick I get an extra smooch if I do. Another shameless hussy here LOL!

All this moral superiority just cracks me up. As though bypassing the Clinique counter makes one speshul, virtuous, and prettier on the inside and out? Might need a little Botox to unscrew that pursed mouth, folks. You don't wanna wear it? Great, that's absolutely fine. If I want to, mind extending me the same courtesy????

I haven't read through this entire thread so hope this isn't a repeat. How about just dying your lashes?

I totally HATE makeup, especially at shows. But I also have invisible lashes and find that mascara helps with the sun. I haven't tried the dye yet because I'm too cheap.

Sadly, it is a repeat. Someone else mentioned it, and a couple of others said, "no way."

IMO, I do not use Maybelline as I have had too many instances with their mascara in which it would make my eyes burn. I'm still voting for L'Oreal Voluminous - Waterproof, and since you said you have light eyelashes, I second getting mascara in a soft brown.

Another trick - after pulling the brush out, lightly dab the excess mascara off on a tissue. It helps prevent globs. When applying, do a zig zag motion so that it keeps your lashes separated. Don't forget to replace your mascara every 3 months or so as everytime you take some out, it allows air in to dry out the mascara (then you'll have clumps!). Don't pump your brush INTO the mascara tube either as it will just speed up the clumping process

L'Oreal Voluminous Waterproof--the best. Comes off with baby oil, which is way cheaper than makeup remover. Baby oil takes off the "extended wear" lipstick gunk, too.

2bayboys, I'm sorry I came back here, but context is important. Please don't put words in my mouth.

Of course I wear makeup sometimes. But if it's inconvenient, or costs me sleep, or is impractical with regard to the activity at hand, I can't be bothered. And never while engaged in athletic activities. To me, wearing makeup when you ride a horse or play in a softball tournament or dig in the garden buys into the notion that just doing what we are doing well is never enough, and that women have to look like Malibu Barbie at all times. It says that no matter what else you do, you must be decorative and decorated. And every poster here who says " I never leave the house without X, Y, and Z makeup" just confirms me in that belief.

And it matters because some of you are going to raise daughters who will be raised in the same mental prison that says that job #1 for women is managing their appearance.
I tolerate all kinds of animal idiosyncrasies.
                                        I've found that I don't tolerate people idiosyncrasies as well. - Casey09

I agree in theory, but not in practice.

While most people who know me know that I'm not a huge makeup person (and rarely, if ever, wear any type of foundation makeup), I would not be caught dead without eyeliner. I go through like 2 sticks of it per month. I carry it in my vehicles, my purse, my work bag, etc.

There is something about "applying one's game face" before a competition or any kind of "all eyes on you" event. To me applying my makeup before a horse show feels more like those black swooshy marks that football players put on their cheeks.
