Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

On the make-up topic: I wear it for ME - even if I'm home alone.
Exactly! I would feel sorry for anyone who felt they were being scrutinized and felt they had to wear make-up. I couldn't care less about what other people think. I left that in middle school. I enjoy all aspects of make-up. The excitement of getting a new product, the smell of it, trying it out, etc is what I like. As I confessed, I am a product junkie. The whole ritual of being a girly-girl is one I wholeheartedly embrace and it doesn't have a thing to do with what anyone else thinks. It's fun, period.

I'll have to try out the Dior mascara. I have read good reviews about it.

I'm morally opposed to people expecting me to adhere to their moral beliefs!

I use the L'Oreal Voluminous, too - love love love it. Use the waterproof when expecting rain, tears or showing - works like a charm.

Oldenmare - who wears makeup/mascara whenever / whyever she darn well feels like it!!!

o.m.g. What bizarre reactions. I haven't been in public and yes, even including stables without makeup for the past 15 years. I must have no morals. You know what? I do it for ME. My husband loves how I look regardless, I don't think I look like a dog without it, but I feel much more polished, put together, and happy when I feel I've done everything to look my best. With my uneven skin tone, blotchiness, and redness, that involves foundation, powder, and blush. Taking FIVE minutes out of my day to make myself feel good is worth it to me. Heaven forbid I ever paint my nails too!!! I'm ashamed to even admit it but sometimes... brace yourself... I even have a smoking hot PEDICURE under my boots!! I won't dare admit that I even wear disgustingly girly underwear under my breeches sometimes too. I just shouldn't even show my painted, feminine, girly face in the barn.

To the OP, I use MAC splashproof. I use MAC everything!

Have you ever cleaned your face after a day at the yard and seen what MUCK comes off? I ALWAYS wear sunblock and foundation, (plus mascara!), even if only to protect my skin. Yes, some people at the yard make comments, but then I look 10 years younger than I am and they look 10 years older than they are.

In addition, why do you care if other people wear makeup? Their choice, surely, even if they do look like drag queens.

          Edited to add:

I don't typically wear makeup in the barn (mostly I'm too lazy), but when I go out I use MAC everything too. I've sweated in it and never had a raccoon face from the mascara ever. MAC is wonderful stuff!!

Diorshow, or Dior Iconic. Both are fantastic, waterproof, and long-lasting. I can't tell you how many compliments I've gotten since wearing the stuff -- just amazing.

And I always wear makeup...I used to have bad acne and though I don't anymore, I like looking polished.

Humm - wow! I did not expect to come back and find so many responses to my question. Even more surprized at the few hateful ASSuming remarks that since I am asking about mascara, I must doll up to the drag queen status.

For those of you who just gave me an honest answer..my heartfelt thanks to you. I will again try one of those brands ...and will even try the waterproof kind again.

For the few who felt the need to be insulting and hateful...I usually find that people who could care less about their facial appearance..could also care less about the rest of their physical appearance as well....

Now - someone ....please pass the butter for my popcorn!

I just wear lots of deodorant and make sure my underwear and socks don't have holes in them.

Hmmm - never thought that not wearing makeup meant you didn't care about your physical appearance or facial care. What a very shallow, superficial thought.

The way I look at it if you don't wear makeup you just don't wear makeup. Whether by preference, allergies or religious edict. Really doesn't matter and it's really no one's business - and it's most certainly not evidence that the person neglects their physical appearance. If you wear it - it's also not only none of my business, I'm not going to think you're taking better care of your appearance or skin than I am.

By the way - I wear Mary Kay. I have to - my aunt is a Mary Kay lady therefore I am a Mary Kay customer. Before her plunge into the world of Pink Cadillacs - Lancome or Clinique.

I also don't wear jewelry when I ride - not even my wedding band. Does that mean I don't care to display signs of personal wealth or does it mean I don't want to lose a finger or earlobe if I get hung up on something?

(I just don't want to get hung up on anything or lose a nice piece of jewelry)

Another vote for L'Oreal Voluminous. I wear it to work (office), to the barn and when I show, shameless hussy that I am. It's inexpensive and it never runs or smudges.

ETA -- how you put on mascara can make a difference. A makeup artist at a photo shoot told me the best way to keep it from smudging is to dust your eyelashes lightly with facial powder, then put on a light coat of mascara. Wait for that to dry, then put on another coat.

Thanks for insulting those of us who don't wear makeup AND tried to give you honest, helpful answers.

I don't even know what you're trying to imply there (no makeup = fat? unshaven? ugly? what?) but tongue-in-cheek or not, it was not appreciated.

I apologize. That was not my intent. It was said off the cuff of a very few who insinuated that I dolled up like a drag queen just because I was asking about mascara.

Again as I posted "For those of you who just gave me an honest answer..my heartfelt thanks to you."

I'm late to the fray here (think I'm glad about that), but I'll give a very high two-thumbs-up to the Blinc mascara. It's also marketed under the name Kiss Me. It makes tubes around your lashes and I never ever get smudges. They also make a lash primer that you use first and it helps it stick better. The Maybelline waterproof and the Diorshow were my two favs before, but I find this to be much, much longer lasting and less clumpy.

Ooh, I do not recommend this at all!! If this is not done by a really, REALLY good qualified person, it can result in eye damage. Be very careful if you choose to go this route.

                              GREAT mascara remover

Since we're discussing waterproof formulas for riding and how they are a pain to remove, I thought I'd add that The Body Shop has an AMAZING waterproof eye makeup remover. It is a chamomile based cream formula, and it is non-irritating and fabulous. A little goes a long way, and it lasts a long time.

I've tried the blue Sephora brand remover, and it didn't work too well. Just FYI.

And if only there were a smiley that batted its eyelashes - that would be amazing right now!

I rock a 'smoking hot pedicure under my boots' too! Gorgeous color w/ designs, and I even wear big ass aviator sunglasses. Its fun. When things get serious, I couldn't care less about breaking nails, chipping paint, my make-up, tossing aside the cool shades, and getting down to business (be it mucking stalls, scrubbing stall mats, whatever!). But while I'm farting around, I enjoy looking 'good'. Good onya girl! I think it should be seen as a personal choice, not a political statement! I'm not a girly-girl per se, but definitely like showing a polished exterior (just as much as I like conducting myself in a polite, educated manner). I love seeing others who are put together; not excessively, not covered w/ accessories/make up, but simply put together, clean, polished. Looks professional.

Timely thread...I'm actually wearing eye make up right now! Funny because I put on eyeliner and mascara maybe 3-4 time per year for the last 5-6 years or so. Well, mascara only more often than that, maybe 3-4 times per month. And I'm wearing eye makeup today because my husband showed a friend of mine a photo of me yesterday...it was a photo that was used on my business cards when I was a Realtor so I had on cosmetics and my hair down and done. (my normal look is no make up and baseball hat/ponytail) My friend didn't believe it was me, LOL! So this monring I thought since I had an errand to run I'd put on some make up. Of course I shmeared it all to hell because I forgot I had it on and rubbed my eyes. So now instead of "neatly polished" I did errands looking more like "Courtney Love."
I have white-blonde eyelashes, very pale white skin and very dark blue eyes. So sometimes when hubby and I go out for a bite to eat I'll swipe on a little mascara so that my face doesn't look like plain oatmeal with 2 blueberries floating in it.
I have the Maybelline mascara...pink wiith green top of course. Been wearing that for ages...since back when I used to wear make up all the time for work. I prefer the pink & green over the expensive department store types. They make a great waterproof too, stays put without flaking on me, but comes off easily with a quick wipe of baby oil.
In the last 5 years, this is the most make up I've worn:

That was my Pumpkin Head costume for taking the kids trick or treating...it was a joke on my daughter's childhood nickname: Pumpkin Head Pencil Neck.
                                  You jump in the saddle,
                                  Hold onto the bridle!
                                  Jump in the line!
                                  ...Belefonte

LOL here too. Personal choice thing here, ladies - won't hurt anyone else whether she "does" or "doesn't" so who cares!

I'm actually impressed when I see riders who have not only put in a great trip, but also come back looking lovely and well put together.

I've gone both ways though - if I'm having a rough go, I'm the renegade tomboy rider with smudges on my breeches, slobber on my arms & hair escaping my helmet all over the place.

On the days when everything is running like clockwork, I not only manage to get myself on the horse without smudge & slobber, I have hair in a hairnet & (drumroll) a bit of MAKEUP on. Those are the days I feel most calm and in control, and suprise suprise, have the best goes. It's just about having that bit of polish, you know? And yep, it's for ME! Same reason I deck my horse out in glorious purples you know? For me! And for lovely blinged out photos! ))

No hints on best mascaras, I'm taking notes myself lol. But I didn't know about that tinting lashes idea, I like the sound of that, must look into!

Anyway, I don't have scientific proof yet, but I'm pretty darn sure that me wearing mascara and tacking up with plenty of purple makes my horse jump better. I'll let you know if I get any studies done next season...

As a redhead with ultra-blond lashes (and eyebrows, sadly) - I have tried the lash tinting and found it to be a complete waste of time and money.

FWIW - and I used a highly trained/recommended professional (yes, I checked her and the salon out prior to visiting - have also heard the horrors about what can go wrong).

Should have saved that money for another tube of mascara!

Darn! I guess it sounded too good to be true...

Ah well, when I have the time I can "grow" myself some normal, natural looking eyebrows & lashes - with pencils & mascara, lol
