Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

That's what I've read, is that they are usually hunter ponies that went oversized. I suppose it could be both?

    • I think I'm the only COTHer who completely totalled two vehicles in the span of a bit less than one year, WITHOUT the involvment of alcohol, on clear days (on one ice was involved, in the other a deer). AND got more money each time from the insurance company, and got progressively better vehicles out of the deal. (and all without major injuries)

      I love my insurance company.

          • Swale, you and I may have been separated at birth. I don't know what a roll a thing is. And I don't bandage my horses's legs (thank goodness he hasn't had an injury yet; knock on wood) b/c I do have a phobia about wrapping incorrectly and causing a bowed tendon. And I don't wear spurs. My horse can be lazy sometimes, but a crop usually solves the problem. The main reason for not wearing spurs is that I tend to turn out my leg when I ride. When I've had spurs on and I've ridden this way, my horse has not been very happy.

                  • I may be the only COTHer who...

Had her very first fall off of a horse that wasn't moving.
It was my fourth riding lesson, we had been cooling out the horses bareback, and when I dismounted, I got overbalanced and slid down the horse's side head first. That was the start to my recurring back problems...

My 5'7" spouse rides our 14.2-on-her-tippy-tippy-toes filly (and I at 5'11" will, too, once she is a bit more solid in her training, though I will probably not compete her).

CookiePony, another thing we have very close in common, but I got you – and all the others who have posted except maybe hiddenlake – beat on this one.

I have a pair of Dehners in my closet that were worn in JFK's inaugural parade.

Speaking of, anyone know if you can alter the width of the ankle of 30+ year old Dehner's? The company's been no help...

And I know I'm not the only historian on COTH, because CookiePony is one, too!

I do have OCD. I doubt I’m the only one, though. I dunno, maybe I am! But I agree with Reynard Ridge, in any case, that a mild case is fiiiiiiiine!

                      Kementari does.

I am probably one of the few COTHers who know how to do more than one quote in a post, and can type out the more complicated smilies rather than just clicking on them.

I may also be the only COTHer who typed out her whole post in Word to be able to respond to everyone!

But at least I'm not the only geek.

                      • I pulled my horses mane for the first time about a month ago...... then one of the teens in the barn "fixed" it for me

I have yet to learn to properly clean my gelding's sheath myself.. ( I have done some random.. "picking" when the opportunity has come around but I have yet to delve into the "cave" and go spelunking for the elusive bean) which brings me to the fact that I don't know exactly where the "bean" is or what one looks like....(but I do have an appt with trainer and good drugs to learn soon)

I may also be the only one who has jumped 3'3 (maybe it was even bigger?) in their first four weeks of ridding......okay, so the horse took off with me and headed staight towards an outside line. I was told I had perfect form over the first fence...pretty off for the second...and came off before the third

I don't ride, although I do own a horse. She lives 10k miles away from me, which makes scheduling a ride tricky.

I wonder ... I might be the only CoTHer who lives on mainland China? I haven't noticed anyone else ...

has won a horse on COTH!! I entered the contest for the fabulous Savannah V and won. She's now happily munching hay in my barn while her mom is getting ready to be deployed to Irag or Afganistan. Top that?

                                • I am probably the only COTHer.....

that has been riding for 42 years and still doesn't do it very well

                                  • First of all, I think it's nice that so many other people feel Invisible at times that it actually has a name

I might be the only poster who thinks is so cool that all of you COTH people seem to know each other personally, and wish that I actually knew ONE person on this board.
Also, I regularly post and lurk on the eventing board, and I've never ridden in an event.

                                    • I may be the only COTHer who events a Hungarian Warmblood Lipizanner cross mare and hunts a Belgian Appaloosa Cross gelding. One is absolutely gorgeous, the other.....not so much .
It's psychosomatic. You need a lobotomy. I'll get a saw.

                                      • ellemayo, I see you're in MA...come to the Equine Affaire this November and watch this BB for updates on meeting times/places. That way you can meet a bunch of fellow BBers. BTW...that's one freaking cool user-name! I always thought that would make a hilarious show name for a horse!
And hopefully I WILL be able to make it this year, missed too many years in a row now.
Now wait, there are folks on here who play violin? Isn't that one of the toughest instruments to play? I adore music...and have zero sense of beat, tempo and timing. Am also tone deaf. And uncoordinated. Watching me sing and dance to the radio while I do housework is close to being a contact sport, LMAO! Or looks like a National Geographic Special.
Hmmm...I'm wondering if I;m the only Cother who does/has something. I'm not the only one with a friend that's a turkey vulture...because I remember someone found a large fuzzy baby one in their stall on this BB once. I may be the only one with a really old coyote "pet." I'm betting I'm the only one who has had to pry a bone out of the teeth of a pissed off fisher and had to give an enema to a badger once. (well hell, my "only ones" are freaking weird and nobody else would want to have those as "only ones")
I'm sure I'm not the only one who regularly has to haul her husband and my tractor out of the manure pile.
"Honey, why are you sitting in the manure pile?"
"Ummm...it's warm? BTW, could you go get the tow chain and truck?"
"The freaking tractor is under you, isn't it???? Dammit, I thought I hid those keys well enough!"
I know I have OCD when it comes to horses and animals. Hubby has OCD when it comes to me. Makes for an interesting household.

                                        • Ummm, Little Valkyrie? You KNOW you've got to post photos of those crosses now, don't you???
