Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Is Bo your horse or SO? I mentioned the discussion to Mr. FMF and he rolled his eyes and said: "You didn't invite these people over, did you?"

I'm sure by the time we move to NC he'll have completely forgotten about this and will be happily entertaining COTH'ers of the area when he remembers...kinda like getting ass-whacked with a dead cactus.

Bo is my husbands nickname. His mama calls him Bozo when he has a blonde moment, my dad calls him Bodine, (his real name is Jeff), and he says he is BODACIOUS, so I call him Bo, and he never knows which one I am referring to, lol

You know, scare him. Tell him I am coming to visit my sister and her grandbaby and kids and that I will stop by. THat should REALLY scare him, lol.

            • I'm don't think he was scared; probably just wondering if he needed to start putting on his swimming trunks when going in the pool. (Or maybe he thought his 'scaping needed a touch up?) Geez, I think I'm going to be having nightmares of the topiaries a la "The Shining"!

              • Things I've learned on COTH...

                - that all horse people are crazy including me.
                - that this board is far reaching, especially brought home by the fact that people at New Holland had read my post about an episode there.
                - that accumulating tack is a country-wide addiction.
                - that there is a wealth of info by some very experienced and skilled people here.
To many, the words love, hope and dreams are synonymous with horses. ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes

                  • - when you read a train wreck and are later walking around with a goofy smile on your face because you're still thinking about, people at work will think you're weird
                    - when you interrupt the quite cube farm to laugh outloud at one of Reynard Ridge's posts, people at work will think you're weird
                    - when you then try to stifle a laugh and just make weird spurting noises, people at work will think you're weirder yet
                    - when you're balling your eyes out because somebody you've never met just put down a horse you've never met, people at work will think you're weird

                    - you're really glad that you can get back onto COTH while you're at work and spend time with other weirdos like yourself

                    - you're really greatful for a boss that lets you work 40 hours a week for a job that only requires 20 hours worth of work, because when working around COTH it takes 40 to do everything

everyone has the best horse in the world

barefooters and farriers will never get along (and that's just the way they like it )

Silly threads are lots of fun

                          Vampire movies are cool

Sorry to disagree - my FARRIER made my TBs into Barefooters and declared it was the best thing for them...lol...there is one farrier in the US of A that thinks that 90 percent of all horses can go shoeless and not just curl up and die...and he doesn't do any "natural" junk..just trims them a bit longer for the first three to four trimmings...lol...no stone bruises, etc. Here's a hint ( I know, I know, but you want to learn don't you?... have farrier trim horses a bit longer than if trimmed for shoes (forget that monstrous Strasser crap...sorry!! off topic!)... then do not just throw Dobbin out on the paddock to fend for himself. The key is "slowly introduce Dobbin or Dobbiness to life w/o shoes by turnout on soft ground for a couple of hours in the am, bring back to barn, a couple of hours pm, bring back to barn. Clean hooves. Over the next 6 weeks...increase time out, and terrain. If you've had Dobbin on shavings and soft dirt, put him out a couple of hours on regular paddock or pasture, then bring in. This works...I know, I have two OTTB that people said "they will never be sound without shoes", both go barefoot year round and ride barefoot and have the bestest hooves in the world on GA. Clay and ROCK...lots of rock...neither have been lame, other than one abscess in two and a half years...but
if you really think your horse cannot go barefoot, don't make him...use YOUR judgement.. you are supposed to be smart...after all, you do own a horse..lol., don't get talked into more than you can handle. I am just saying, it has worked for 3 of mine plus a mule and a draft..and an "ay-rab"..so it may work for yours. What I have learned:

Most farriers will trim a horse like it is to be shod..and that is where the trouble begins. If going barefoot, the horse needs a little more 'hoof" and a little less trim...

                          so there, I am through..that is all I know..you've wrung it out of me...I'm tired....I can't think..bwa bwa bwa...

Sidepasser and the Incredible TBs who are deprived of PEEPs..must get PEEPs.

Honor and Maja and Noe thank my Farrier (Noe, unfortunately has been rehomed and may now be part of the "shoed" sect)...but...I have nothing against shoes and my draft mare thanks me for that...the big old lug...

Things I have learned on this board:

NEVER ever venture, even a tippy toe, over into the dressage board. I'm scared of those ppls...they bite!! (I love dressage though and if I can find an instructor, ANYONE SOUTH OF ATLANTA that has a place where I can turn a 36 ft. rig around in???? and teaches dressage and is 50 miles from LaGrange GA - please email me privately...I do so hope that this isn't a violation of some sort..but I really, really , need some lessons and want to be one of those ...."eventer" types but without dressage...it's hopeless...

                          That Hunter people are the "best dressed";

That Eventers have the most fun and that PinknGreen is a REALLY nice person who put up with me at the Poplar Creek show...and has a new honie/horsie and she is braver than I...she actually jumps!!

That the Eventer I most admire is too far from me to take lessons from...LittleKYFARM...she is a very nice person and was helpful when I was trying to place Noe...and didn't have to be and gave me the name of someone who could teach me lessons if I could ever get in touch with the person...

That Cothers will pull together and help any type rescue in need and the board admn should praise them for their efforts.

That the giveaway column is a good thing..some people just need a companion or a kitty (ok...I need a danged dog that is a LGD..my LGD is ancient...and Miss Lucy, the rat terror..will need a pal soon when the LGD passes over the Bridge to keep the bad things at bay.."

That I laff my butt off at the 700 dollar pony person...THANK YOU>> in my somewhat trying time right now. That I offer help when I can and don't expect recompense.

I've learned there is a great need for volunteers at 3 day events..but as an invisible, who would want me to volunteer even though I used to jump judge and scribe..now I am invisible to all...even the invisibles...

and that. my folks, is a just a somewhat short summary of what I have learned - other than Arabs can do what your big horses can do, just faster, with more grace and raw talent and look good doing it!! LOL..now run with that!!

Sidepasser - just stirrin the pot...lol....
