Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

THE INCREDIBLE INVISIBLES, PART ONE: In Which We Introduce Ourselves

People can post a lot but if they don't tend to stir the pot and get into fights, they (we) apparently go relatively unnoticed.Originally posted by jazzriderYou know, I really don't think those of you that have posts over 1,000 can be invisible. You've been knocking on the BB door an awful lot -- surely you must be seen or at least heard? Maybe you're like Poltergeists, invisible but able to throw things around (or at people) when need be. A somewhat elevated invisible status -- with the ability to make noise for those of us that are truly invisible, when invoked!

Okay, my turn!
I am um, oh yeah, 29 ,and happily married for just a smidge over 4 years. Hubby and I met in high school so have actually been together 11 years!
We have two cats as well as two horses.
I own two OTTBs, the newest being the newest love of hubby's.
I am or have evented both and not seeing a switch to anything else. I grew up doing the local hunters in VA and after riding my first semester in college quit till after graduation. Nothing super unique about me except I did go to four schools in four years and only lost three credits/one class. (I have attended R-MWC, NOVA, George Mason, and Mary Wash) Oh and I have a twin brother.
Was pre-law, bought a horse instead and the money has been bleeding out ever since.
I am currently pretty much jobless, though I do do some accting work for Five Guys. I am SUPPOSE to be looking for a job but . . . .
Okay, next!

I'm so invisible I am afraid of posting on a thread about invisible people.
One wonderful Kerry Blue terrier.
One absolutely wonderful adorable forgiving Hanoverian that I have had for 10 years.
One terrific boyfriend who is supportive of horses but he is 6'8" and 270 lbs so not much chance he will pick up riding.
One job as a defense scientist.
Two months until I defend my PhD dissertation.
About 120 pages left to write in my dissertation.... so time to get back to writing.
Thanks for a place to post!

So Monday are you saying I have a big mouth!?!
It is funny but my family has known the owners of Five Guys for a long time. The Murrells have been in few not as successful business ventures with my father while having one family store. About three years ago they opened up to franchisees and BANG! They are going like gangbusters!
Most of the East Coast territory as been sold so there will be lots and lots of Five Guys stores in the coming years.

Gee, I remember Five Guys when there was only one restaurant, and it sure weren't nothin' fancy.
They're based out of VA, but the closest I've seen one to where I live is the suburbs of Richmond, which ain't all that close. I'm almost 90 miles southwest of Richmond, so that's a leetle too far for me to go for just a burger n'fries.Homeopathy claims water can cure you since it once held medicine. Hey, I'm going to PM you after work. It would be nice to talk to someone who has the same frustrations and reservations I have! All of my friends are the "settle down, find a job and buy some land" types and I guess don't feel trapped in their job/state/whatever. I do, and it's kinda nice to know I'm not the only one who feels that way. It's getting old feeling alone in these issues!!!Originally posted by RegalmeansWow, your situation sounds a lot like mine - the job, the age, the singleness, the still living in your home state thing - I have the same struggles and I've been so frustrated with things recently. If you ever want someone to talk/vent to, drop me a PM?
And yes, I have over 2,500 posts but they're over 6 years - and I tend to go MIA/quiet a lot on the board.
So, talk later then!
Maybe we can give eachother some new ideas or thoughts re: careers, singledom, and life in general!

There's a five guys on Rt. 29 way west of DC (Warrenton?). I used to trailer over to a trainer in Remington and it was always a hard decision as to whether to stop at Five Guys or IHOP on the way home.
Sending thoughts of IHOP to our invisible friend in Ireland! (sorry, I'm too lazy to scroll back and find your screen name...but at least now you're a little more opaque!)

I loved the shakes Five Guys did for a while. I guess it was just a trial thing becuase when they stopped I emailed and asked why. They said it just wasn't their thing.
Its so good, but not the healthiest. I am only a 15 minute walk from the one in Old Town so if I am going to eat there I make myself walk. I doubt it even puts a dent in the calories, but it sure helps me rationalize!

You sound just like me: Nearly 40, never married and for no apparent reason other than I was (as my dear granny put it) independent as a hog on ice. I preferred to think of myself as intimidatingly attractive and successful.Originally posted by DressageGeek "Ribbon Ho"EquusRocks and Reagalmeans...also similar (except that I've moved from NY to MA to MO). What is so very cool about this thread is "meeting" so many of you.
I met my future husband in a graduate studies class. We dated for 6 weeks, got engaged and married within 6 months. It had to be fast, because if I'd had a long time to think about it, I would have backed out.
Fifteen years later, I am very happy. To be honest, I like being married better than being single. But marriage is a helluva lot of work -- much more than I ever guessed. And even after almost 15 years, there still are times when I long for the peace and quiet and freedom of being single.
I'm not telling you this in a "yes, Virginia, there is hope for you" way. But because I know if I hadn't gotten married, I'd still be very happy. And that sounds like the situation you're in. And whether you ever meet The One or not, that's a great place to be.

Invisibleness
Rapidly approaching 50. Divorced, my daughter is 24. Currently cohabitating with a wonderfully supportive but relatively unhorsey fellow. After 17 years as a single parent living with someone has been a challenge. We share our small house (800 sq feet) with my daughter, 2 dogs (1 boxer, 1 sheltie) and two cats (Tucker vertically challenged red tabby and Harvey a long skinny red tabby). We have 3 horses (Angel - a 6 year old flat tenderfooted TB, Jewel - 8 year old opinioniated Arabian, and Piper - a yearling Percheron filly) We ride English and Western, dabble in dressage, and eventually when Piper gets bigger (in age although probably also in size) will work on driving. My aim is to do some eventing with the Thoroughbred but from what I can gather hoof transplants are still some way away so eventing may remain a dream. I work full time in a college library, commute and hour and a bit each way, also am in the midst of renovating an old cabin on a lake and some how or another never seem to have time to sit around and do nothing.

"8 year old opinioniated Arabian,"
Corby, that made me laugh out loud. I haven't met an Arabian yet that wasn't opinionated!
I guess that's why I like the bug-eyed little demons so much!
