Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

Wow, your situation sounds a lot like mine - the job, the age, the singleness, the still living in your home state thing - I have the same struggles and I've been so frustrated with things recently. If you ever want someone to talk/vent to, drop me a PM?

And yes, I have over 2,500 posts but they're over 6 years - and I tend to go MIA/quiet a lot on the board.

As for a superpower, hmmmm I dont know, I need to give that some thinking!!
OMG...someone quoted me! I am not as invisible as I thought.....or perhaps since my battle with the guinea-hen-eating-ratsnake last night my super powers are drained. Must go to the dept. store (in my barn clothes) and be ignored by the snotty self impressed sales girls. That is sure to strengten my powers. They may not see me coming but they will sure smell me!

I try and try but never fit in anywhere.....that's ok I have my own little world.

        Stats
going to reach the half century mark this year.
have my own little piece of heaven - 1.5 acre, little house, one staller (barn not outhouse), one fiesty 23 yo little red mare, one very large and getting quite old black swampmutt girl, and two barn kitties - one follows along on trail walks - the other guards the yard.
I am goofy, love to write, and am a polly-anna - professionally I am a system business analyst. I also teach/train on weekends and week nights.
My special CoTH power is tail-coating - I jump on threads, toss my serious two cents in, or, pull a rail stake to help a derailment - no-one usually notices though.....
My special other power - making smiles happen, building confidence, and easing fears. And, hurting myself on shadows....

        • Wow, there sure are alot of us. Who would've thought? I am not very good at witty humor, but I agree that we "invisibles" may just have the superpowers as a combined group to turn nice-gone-nasty threads back in the right direction.

Jilltx-thanks so much for replying to all of us. And, the chickens aren't really that bad. Just the mean old roosters can get cranky sometimes.

I am taking my human kids to their first little fun horse show tomorrow. Should be interesting as the pony can be a fiesty at times.

            • Well I guess I'm invisible too! Either that or I'm blocked big time Poor me, for someone who posts so much, I don't get noticed much...

I turned 41 on Wednesday I have a totally non-horsey hubby and two teenaged daughters (16 & 13) We have a mutant giant black lab, Bumpus. He was dumped at the farm and I suspect it's because he doesn't retrieve. Ever. He doesn't like to swim where his feet can't touch the bottom either. He's a freak, but we love him. He was recently joined at the house by Daisy, who appears to be a lab or golden/Chow mix. I recently tried my hand at dog clipping on her and found the Clipmasters to be up to the task We also have 3 cats, and a rabbit at the house.

              I have 6 horses.
The Heifer (6 y.o. HAN) is leased out to make fabulous babies. She's in foal to Freedom Z for '07.
Minnie the Moocher is a 7 y.o. Dartmoor cross who is allergic to south GA and currently leased out to COTH'er In the Air.
Clever Minx, aka:Coco, is my #1 daughter's 7 y.o. TB mare who came to us as a baby from ReRun. She had a rough start in life and is a real sweetie.
Farnley Catena, aka: Angel, is the 23 y.o. Welsh wonderpony who taught my girls soooo much. She's taking a break from teaching kids right now.
Zardene is a 15 y.o. retired OTTB broodie who started me on the path to 'rescue' the occassional beastie.
Candi Streak is the 20 y.o. 100% blind appy that I bought at auction for $70, three months before she lost the vision in her 'good' eye... She's such a special horse!

I keep the horses (along with six fixed barn cats and a beagle-type dog) at a friend's farm. I have a full time job at a wonderful architectural firm. Unfortunately (maybe fortunately), I'm the only one working at my location. The other thirty-some-odd members of the firm are about three hours away. So, not only am invisible on the BB, I'm invisible at work

I guess my super power is my ability to find the bright side. Like MissBri, I have a been told more than once that I am a Polly-Anna. Hey, that's not a bad thing!!
              Y'all ain't right!

              • My superpower?

Starting cliques that no one joins! 'Course they might join if they saw my sig line more frequently...and saw that there IS a lurker's clique. What a paradox.

I am a 42 yo mother to 17 yo daughter that rides and 13 yo son that doesn't. Wife to DH that just can't quite figure out the whole horse thing. Is still waiting to get his money out of the whole deal. Poor guy.

George (Graf Tesoro) the 17.1 hano horse is the equid love of our life. One day I will scan his picture and add it to our profile. Daughter shows in the local shows and she lets me pay the bills and pull the trailer. Currently we are otherwise without animals but am seeking to persuade hubby that small dogs travel well to horse shows. Our rescue lab Tyson succumbed to the ravages of canine diabetes almost 2 years ago now. Sniff.

We live north and west of Boston and horse lives south and east of Boston. Like many of you I spend WAAAAYYY too much time on the BB at the expense of all of the poor unwritten (and unwanted?) SOPs out there. I feel like I know many of you (and some of you I DO know, as it turns out thanks to the OTHER thread) and love you all for your wit and wisdom. Back to lurker status!

                    • oooh, can I go next?

I'm 25, and engaged to a lovely chap who's scared of horses, haha. He is getting better though, and has graduated to being able to hold my sister's horse all by himself, and is now threatening to get on and ride - which I'll believe when I see. We have a wonderful Parson Russell Terrier who's 8 months old and makes us laugh for hours on end. We've been putting a lot of hours in with a dog trainer and are very proud of how good the little munchkin is now.

I am horseless as I can't afford one at the moment (just bought a house) but tend to hang around the yard where I used to keep my pony a lot... I'm also my sister's groom when she events.

I'm currently working hard in my new job at a very large UK port - the aim is to be able to afford a horse by the time I'm 30, which seems like a pipe dream at the moment as the house and wedding seem to be causing me to haemorrage money.

                      I'm enjoying reading about everyone!

But geek they're all so nice. They just want to be able to come here to share and learn. They don't like meanness. I think we can learn allot from the invisibles. I think we are all really just looking for the same things. Both the invisibles and those bad meanies. We all want to be seen, heard, accepted for who we are, and share what we know. It doesn't mater how smart you are or how much experience you have. Horses are for everyone, and there are no stupid questions.

I pledge to use my super powers to protect the invisibles, I will defend them from meanies with my super powers of "brilliant, saucy wit" as bestowed upon me by jilltx *thanks jilltx*.

Oh! I am invisible at work too! It is by design and it works very well but still. My company is in downtown San Francisco. I am in Washington State. My company does have a Seattle office but my team, project, group and so forth are all SF-based so there's no reason for me to go to the Seattle office. I work at home, in my rented room, on the farm. I am so NOT complaining, it has more advantages than disadvantages. But it does make me invisible! And it gives new meaning to "out of the loop".

                                    • Hobie Cat:

I have 2 horses in training as well. One in England, who ran 4th on Tuesday and won 3 races last year as a 2yo. I don't like mentioning when he's going to run either because he always gets beat then! His name is Valentino Swing.
Then we have an unraced 2yo filly who we think will be named Annia Faustina. (name of Marcus Arelius's wife). She has a lovely pedigree and will join the broodmare band when she is finished. Cool more racehorsey people.

I do believe you can still be invisible writing 1000 posts. That ignore button must be in effect for a lot of us, you know those not in the cool clique! You write your little heart out and nobody cares!

Could someone tell me how to include the Incredible Invisible Clique at the bottom of my page. I am also a computer geek and only just learned how to cut and paste.

                                      • Equi, you change it in your profile.

Go to the private messages section, then edit your profile. That's all there is to it, really! I'm such a dingbat when it comes to computers, so if I can do it, you can too.
Homeopathy claims water can cure you since it once held medicine. That's like saying you can get sustenance from an empty plate because it once held food.

                                        • Okay - I pledge that whenever a thread gets mean, especially to an Invisible, I will use my Super Derailing Powers to derail the thread, and thus protect them in the only way I can.

Actually, I have been nice to some Invisibles! I let Rt66Kix try out my brand new saddle and shared treats with her horses - even peeps!

And Quin is going to visit tonight and I even put clean sheets on the bed in the guest room. I mean, I had to do laundrey for that.
