Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

  • I wanna join!

I'll make it quick...as I don't want to take up too much invisible space.

I'm 28 and live in Georgia. I'm mom to 2 race-track rejects, well my dog (greyhound) actually did really well on the track, but then got injured and they pulled her off the track and then I got her My horse raced 7 times and only won once, which I actually was able to track down his win pic recently My horse has the cutest begging tactic, he ticks his tounge out.

I used to show my horse in lower level dressage under the name Less Is More, hence my screen name.... if I had used his registered name "Little Bit Wet" you would think I belonged on an xxx site

I am a whisperer...animals of all shapes and sizes flock to me, birds drop out of the sky in front of me, little teeny tiny black kitties find me as they run in front of my car on a dark night, and I see them, and save them...dogs, cats horses stop what ever they are doing to sniff me, humming birds stop and sit in the tree to watch me in my pool...it is wierd but nice...I own three cats, a mini pin, an ottb, and about ten koi....my two legged offspring is 22 and could care less about my horsey habit...I have rescued animals since I have been five years old....my day job in a busy oral surgery office has me in my caring element daily...(but I am secretly a bitch, just ask my daughter and my mom around that time of the month)...I hope when I die all the animals that have touched my life will be lined up at the pearlie gates awaiting my arrival! :P

Oh gawd... I fell for the Quarter in the worst way- from the driver's seat of a mule drawn carriage late at night! I will never be normal again *sigh*

As for the Breyers (and Stones and Artist Resins) I don't encase them in leather (unless it's realistic tack!) but I do trans-gender them on many occasions Sometimes I just geld, though.

                        • Can I join? Pleeeeeeease.
I'm 46, started out life in New Zealand, married an American, and moved to the States (14 years). He realized before we married, when we first met, horses were going to be part of our lives, as I was running a home for wayward racehorses. He is still not a horse person, but I think some small progress has been made. We have produced one 8 year old son, and a 5 year old daughter. I'm a recent graduate of a Feldenkrais training program. We share our house with two aged Springer Spanials/Forest Runners, and a Lab/Pit (a pitador, for all the labradoodle fans), a former city dog, relocated for the joys of county life. We also have 4 Ducks.
Home is a former tree farm, of which I have 4 acres cleared, for the lifestyle maintenance of His Regal Highness, who has been on stall rest because he foundered (IR and thyroid problems) in February, and had a tenotomy in both front legs, (his mantra -- "Watching grass grow, wood shaving beneath my hooves"), and his Grey Friend Ted, who arrived here in mid April, yet to be ridden and enjoying being the official grass trimmer of Horse Pasture.
His Regal Highness is 3/4 Morgan, and when not in recovery, one heck of a horse. Ted is an Andalusian/Arab cross, who at 13 hasn't done much in as far as being a riding horse, I'm hoping he will be a good allround kind of guy. Now, all I need to do is recover from getting my apendex out, and the following abcess, and Ted and I will be good to go.

                          • I am super-duper invisible, and I like it!

I am entirely too close to turning 30 for comfort, have a hubby who tolerates and for the most part supports my horsey obsessive compulsive disorder. We have 5 4-legged kids, two labmutt dogs and 3 cats, plus my baby, the horse. Shaq is a 6 year old arabmutt (was supposed to be pintabian, but someone forgot the white) who I got as a long yearling. Nearly 5 years and many lessons (from him, to me) later, he is broke, extremely rideable and we are just starting to jump. I, sadly, have no super powers.

                              • Hey! Me too! I'm 26 yrs old and thought I was out of riding for a least a year to "figure out what I wanted." I lasted three months! I'm riding down in SoCal at Copper Meadows and loving it. I don't own a horse currently, but I'm catch riding a couple of them and riding one giant TB consistently. He's awesome--although his name is "Chicken Little" just because he's always just a little worried the sky is falling!

No kids, my SO is British and still in the UK getting his Phd in Physics (he should be over here soon!) so I tend to spend a good chunk of each summer up in Manchester with him. I'm a school teacher (middle school) and I love it!

I think it's mean that you won't jump higher than 2'6'...but you expect your dog to do it...all alone...with NO handholding!! I think you're probably the SMARTEST one of us here because you don't lease or own a horse. You're probably also rich beyond most of our wildest dreams!
Ozy's only 19" at the doggy withers, so he'll max out at jumping 2'. Now CHYNA (the pit) - when we got her we installed a 4' picket fence (the maximum allowed by our homeowners assoc). Turns out she's REALLY scopey and LAUGHS at our measly 4'. If only she had hooves, she'd be the next Grand Prix Horse of the Year!

And rich? Not so much. But we play the lottery!

                                    • Me too please?

I'm 30, happily married, have 3 male human children (11, 6 and 4), am an IT Project Manager which means I'm gaining weight at approximately the weight of 1 lb per byte.

I currently am owned by a gorgeous draft x 3 year old named Wendall, who is just the best thing since sliced bread. He just arrived in my new state and recently discovered the electric fence.

I have been riding since...well...forever and have been owned by many horses. I used to teach, but found that I had no time to ride to get my riding skills back up to par, so decided to head back into the ammy ranks. I am truly an amateur as far as actually riding goes, at the moment, and can barely ride my way out of a paper bag. I am, however, one of those people that has always ended up working with "project horses", and enjoy doing "web consultations" over email (they are free )

I am not remotely Martha Stewart-like, in fact, I would say that I am the antithesis of Martha Stewart. As of right now I'm mid-move (500 miles to another state) and living in an apartment with aerobeds, folding chairs, boxes, and of course liberal amounts of beer. I started a new job, so I'm very busy, and I've been putting up fence. Awww, who am I kidding, the apartment would look like this either way. I hate doing MY laundry, but my horses' laundry is always clean, folded and put away neatly. You don't even want to SEE my closet.

My husband is not horsey at all, in fact, he's from the city and sometimes thinks that a horse addiction is just as bad as a drug or alcohol addiction. Perhaps he's right. However, when we were looking for Wendall he DID find a horse that he really liked and if we could have afforded them both, we would have taken them I'm sure. He also is checking out trailers for me and trying to see what we can get (it's very sweet).

I'm also owned by two dogs, one, a brittany spaniel mix named Sawyer, who is perhaps the most well behaved dogs I've ever met - and the second is named Tikka, who is quite frankly one of the most ILL behaved dogs I've ever met. Tikka is marked like a red fox and is what I call my bipolar dog - she's sheltie/terrier, so she's just absolutely incorrigable, and then completely apologetic afterwards.

I too have a remarkable ability to put both people and animals to sleep. A long time ago I was dubbed quiet butt by many an instructor as I could ride highly sensitive horses. If the horse was a bit of a dullard, however, I had a great deal of difficulty with them. Guess I'm just not that charismatic!

So, my superpower - I have the power of the quiet butt!

                                      • I must be invisible too; I have been calling the Large Stupid Dog for half an hour and he obviously can neither see nor hear me.

I am 46, have a teenaged daughter and a husband and all 3 of us ride. I must have done something very good in a previous life to deserve this! We are doing hunters but are probably open to trying anything. We don't expect to ever do anything beyond little local shows; Kansas doesn't run to big rated circuits and with 3 of us we couldn't afford it anyhow. We live in an old farmhouse with 30 acres of pastures and woods. We have Kahlua, DH's 11 yr old bay TB; Sapphire, DD's 7 yr old grey Appendix Quarter; Harlequin, my very own 4 yr old black and white pinto (the less said about his breeding, the better; "quarter-type" is being polite); and Pistol, our 34 yr old OTTB ex-schoolie who is enjoying life just being a pasture pet. We also have the Owl Cat (barn cat, tends to spook you by appearing up in the rafters), a 16 year old half-Blue Heeler named Girl (yes, we had Boy too but lost him 2 years ago) and the afore-mentioned Large Stupid Dog, a 2 year old Humane Society mixed breed named Patches.

I am an attorney but work in-house for an insurance claims organization rather than a law firm. The pay is probably less but the hours and vacation time are great. I rode a little as a kid but then had a 22 year gap. I started DD in lessons a few years back when she hit the horse-crazy-kid stage and she stuck with it. We got DH to try a few lessons because I couldn't stand that he didn't know what he was looking at, and he took to it like a duck to water. Then I finally got back into it too. With the horses at home to care for and no indoor or even proper outdoor arena my riding time is limited by weather and chores, but I love it all. I found CoTH at the beginning of this year and waste way too much time here in the evenings. I really enjoy the contact with everyone and my goal is to go back and skim through lots of the old threads; some are hilarious and some have been fascinating.

                                        • Hi! I'm 41, an academic scientist, rode and showed as a kid but gave it up for college, grad and postgrad training. Got back into horses when DH and I found faculty positions back east (I'm originally from TN, PhD at Penn, postdoc and first faculty position in San Diego). We bought our farmette in Unionville 4 years ago, bought two completely innappropriate horses for a re-rider and a beginner (DH)--two ~17 hand tbs, one off the track. Mine is Calvin, he's the ottb and completely loony but the sweetest horse on the planet. DH's is Monarch, he is Mr. Cool, the big boss, completely sane but full of "go". Taking care of them and trying to maintain a career in academia is completely nuts--I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. But also great; we are having the time of our lives. Someday I hope to have time for lessons and maybe get back into something competitive again. As soon as I get my second grant...And get a promotion...
