Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

Okay - just posted this on the thread this came from (oh, and I don't have a husband, SO, kids, just kitty Emma, long-haired Calico with short legs and fluffffff):
Well, okay. Here goes. I evented my mare, CoCo through Training level (lost her at 27 two years ago). We both got started later than most. I organized a series of dressage shows and assisted organizing events. I am an area steward at Rolex and Radnor Three-Day events. Was Secretariat Coordinator for '96 Olympics for Equestrian and Modern Pen. Currently own Irish Mosaic (Dublin), a three-year-old 5/8 TB Paint mare. I worked for AHSA/USEF in NYC and here in Lexington as Director of Membership and then Director of Regulation Publications handling the rule book and rule changes. I've worked at a Hanoverian farm and a TB breeding farm. I lived on a TB broodmare farm for 8 years and now am living at a mostly eventing barn and have Dublin with me. I'm a lucky invisible and happy to join y'all on that thread!

Oh, super power. Hmm. Willing snarky teenagers away from those seats in front of me when I'm watching a movie. Oh, and I know the most useless information possible, mostly movie-related.

jilltx - no Onassis is fine, just retired - he like in this 20's or something I think, would need to look him up to get his actual age.

I THINK (and please, if I am wrong, let me know!) that there were only two foals born this year... one was a filly over at Judy Ritchie's and my colt (there may be other thought, really not sure, for some reason though I thought she only bred him to two or three mares last year???)

In 1989 I met the most wonderful horse. I started to lease him and then discovered I would never be able to part from him so I offered to buy him. To my relief, his owner said that she would sell him to me, but only to me because she knew how much I loved him and would give him a forever home. He was 17 years old at the time. For the next seven years I rode him and learned just about everything I know about riding, all from him. He had been an eventing champion and was an absolute dream to ride. When he turned 25 I retired him (a promise I had made to him). I couldn't afford another horse so I quit riding and we bonded even more, if that could be possible. I paid full board for him to continue to live in a stall with daily turnout. Nobody could ever believe that this horse was the age he was. The vets said he was more like 10. When he was 31 he was in a clinic on older horses so that people could see how well a horse can age. He died in January of 2005 and my heart has not healed and I don't think it ever will. He was one month short of his 32nd birthday.

In 2003, after learning about what happened to Ferdinand, I became involved with Old Friends. My sister and I were the first ones to make contact with the Japanese blood agents and found the first two "old friends" to come back to the states, Creator and Sunshine Forever. Micheal Blowen gives us complete credit for Creator being at Old Friends and even gave us the halter he came home in and also gave us shares in him. He was about to be shipped off to Korea but we quickly intervened. Now Michael has lots of top names helping him with his "project" but my sister and I got the first two home.

I don't think I will own another horse, my boy was too special and I just can't replace him. I do help out a friend who runs a horse rescue and just got her 501 status. I live in Sonoma County in California in a beautiful retirement community. Oh and when I was young, I was a professional Roller Derby skater. Skated all over the country in all the big arenas like Madison Square Garden.

                  Okay, here it goes......

                  I am 23 (next week).

I have been married for two years to a wonderful non-horsey man (well non-big horsey man, he loves my mini). I really don't mind that he doesn't like to ride, because he fully supports me.

I am a mother of a beautiful 6mo baby girl who was born Christmas morning. I currently work for my dad at his tire store.

I have been going to school to be a nurse and was scheduled to start my clinicals last summer, but due to my very unexpected pregnancy, I had to put that on hold. I am supposed to start again this October, keep your fingers crossed!

I am the proud mama of three wonderful horses. Mick is a 21yr OTTB that I have had for twelve years. We did the hunters and eq's together. Honey is an 8yr Holsteiner/TB mare that I have had for a year. She is a former dressage hater turned hunter. We are currently having fun together doing the low stuff and will hopefully do the adults and maybe the A/O's together. Thunderpants is my 4yr mini that I bought to babysit Mick when Honey and I are off playing.

I am also the proud mama of a year old black lab named Morgan.

I have been riding for about sixteen years and showing for twelve of those. I have only ever done the hunters other than a very brief time in the jumper ring.

You can see pictures of all my children, other than thunderpants at www.picturetrail.com/jlgordon15

Yeah, I robbed a train. I'm one bad mofo.... ;-)

Actually JoZ, I did it more than once!!!

But before anyone goes hanging a wanted poster in their local saloon, the story: (completely true, I swear on a stack of Horseplay magazines!)

My local 4-H horse club was a supporter of our 4-H Therapeutic Riding program. We volunteered, helped out whenever possible, provided treats for the annual Halloween party, etc.

We also took part in one of the most unorthodox fundraisers in history! There used to be (may still be, I don't know) a passenger train that ran throughout our part of the state. The train was a pretty traditional, old-fashioned affair, and it operated mainly as a part of the tourist trade. Nonetheless, a train. On nice weekends it would be full of tourists and sightseekers and make it's run several times around the loop.

Someone before my time had the brilliant idea of "robbing" the passengers as a fundraiser for the therapeutic riding program. And who better to waylay a locomotive than a bunch of kids on ponies, dressed as cowboys and armed with cap guns and water pistols?!?!

Here's how it went down - on the designated day of the robbery, kids would trailer in or hack to a large, open grass field where the train came through. My barn always hacked over - quite an adventure in itself. Clad in full chaps, flannel shirts, bandanas, and ASTM/SEI riding helmets, I'm sure we were quite a sight. We also all had english tack? Nevermind.

At the scheduled times, the train would blow its whistle as it approached the field. We would trot down to the 'front' of the field, and as the train roared in, we'd gallop alongsidge. I kid you not. The train would pull up in the middle of the field, and we'd ride around waving our cap guns, then dismount, hop on the train while parents held the horses, and collect spare change, checks, etc from the passengers - who of course had been warned ahead of time about the robbery! All proceeds went to the riding program, and we had one heck of a time. We'd get off the train (well, one year they took us for a short ride), remount our ponies, ride around and wave our cap guns some more, and go dump whatever we'd collected back at the cook-out/tailgate party that accompanied the event.

We did this several times and it was always so much fun, and a great benefit for the program. I don't think you could ever do something like it again (this was late 80's/early 90's) - it occurs to me now that the possibility for injury was probably pretty high - fortunately we never experienced any casualties!

And that, in a nutshell, is how I became an outlaw.

Me, me, me!! I'm invisible too, apparently!

I'm kind of silly, but I don't think it comes across on the BB always, my sense of humor can be goofy, but often I say something funny with a straight face and not everyone picks up on that either...inspiration for my humor comes from monty python mostly, I think... Anyway, I live in the mountains and love it here. I like country, still wear my skin tight wranglers, belt buckles and all that every now and then. I am also a big fan of 70's rock, CCR, Allman brothers, marshall tucker band, Lynyrd Skynyrd. I draw the occasional portrait of people's animals, just graphite, wish I had more time for it, I realy enjoy doing this. I have a bit of martha stuart streak in me too, I have a tendency to create artistic things out of nothing...like a life size realistic buffalo out of chicken wire and paper mache, except for the bug eyes and dropped jaw homecoming float for the parade. It even had black sheep wool that was sunbleached out to dark brown for shaggy hair on his shoulders and head...plus my apartment looks like martha stuart lives here...martha stuart is always resourseful I just happen to be more of a...country, barnyard martha maybe.

Well, I am horseless, but I have leased in the past and now I am my trainer's indentured slave and her GP horse's sugar cube biatch. I really like my trainer, she's really nice and has taught me a lot. I have learned to like lunge lessons and I actually enjoy them now.

I am a college student and I support my own horse addiction, which I am proud of saying that because of how far that I have gotten with my riding in the past four years. I have been riding with current grand prix trainer for almost a year, doing dressage for 2 and the two years before that slowly discovering I disliked hunters (thanks to the college's riding team coach...not in a good way) and discovered how wonderful dressage is. I have ridden western, dabbled in reining, barrels, all that. Been riding a total of 10 years. Did hunters because that was what was around, jumped some. Discovered that being yelled at by coach over a course about what I was doing wrong (read: no constructive criticism) made me more nervous about it as I have never been a big fan of jumping and made me more tense and eventually became that I would hold my breath over a whole course...not good. I would get done and be panting like I ran a marathon and people'd look at me like I was crazy. Anyways, I love dressage It is perfect, at least supposed to be and that is perfect for me since I'm a perfectionist.

I am a double major, Animal Science and Agricultural and Applied Economics I will be a super senior next year! I like all the business stuff in Ag Econ, I wish I had added it as a major earlier on. My dream job is to be a bookkeeper/business manager of a profitable sporthorse breeding and training farm.

I have a JRT that is my best buddy She is very silly and a good girl. I got her when she was a year old and she's three now. She is constantly on the lookout for small furry things to chase. She is protective of me too, at night if I'm walking her and a guy is passing by she will stop sniffing and get out in front of me and growl. During the day if a strange guy talks to me she'll do it too. We are very close and can read each other like a book. I am very proud of how well she's been trained and she is my baby. It's almost like I have an ADHD, mute three year old child that I can lock in a box and leave alone, legally.

Plus, I have a Jeep and think it's awesome, got my name from that. Although someday I want a Chevy 2500 HD Diesel

Jilltx, you forgot me - I'm double-invisible (or just work late, so missed these first posts). We were on the juvenile delinquent - three year old support group or sumpin.

mighty mite - I know Michael B. First thing I did when I left USEF was to visit him, looking to be involved with something very worthwhile horsey - before Old Friends was at Hurstland. I didn't by any chance meet you and your sister at an auction last year and invite you over to meet Halfbridled, who is at the farm where I lived at that point?

cosmos mom - can you dig it?

and now for something completely different

Jeepers, if you claim Monty Python as an influence in your life, you will never be invisible to *me*!!!!

                                (I'm also a closet-Martha-wannabe, but don't tell anyone, okay?)

hopashore Where or what is R-MWC??? I don't get out much (as is evidenced by this post!!). LOVE your horses' name!!

Hehe, Hop Ashore is a VERY fitting name for him. Although he raced under it for six years, I always get asked "Did you name him for how he jumps??!" (this weird deer x bunny hop thing, sometimes from a standstill, where he is so round with his neck staring between his knees but forgets about the rest of his legs!). Only over "scary" things though and he's getting better, I swear!

Yeah! Another clique I qualify for !

I'm 39, married to a remarkably tolerant man, who is as close to a real cowboy as you can find in MI , mother of 2 girls (10 & almost 12), and owned by an obscene amount of 4 and 2 legged critters - 14 horses (soon to be 16 ), 4 dogs, 1 house cat, 9 barn cats, 4 guineas, 2 peacocks, and 1 lonely rooster whose hens all got eaten by the local fox . My super power is getting DH to agree that I really NEED 2 more mares .

Wow, I'm so invisible this is the first clique I think I qualify for!

Me in a nutshell: have been invisible since birth, married, 2 two-legged kids (both visible...gene they get from DH), 2 four legged kids, 1 vicious weiner dog, 1 cat, 9 chickens, 13 guineas (might be 12 in a bit...pulled one out of a rat snakes mouth earlier), rode for 15 years as a junior and quit when my best friend was killed in a freak riding accident, am building a barn/facility from scratch, long to be a re-rider but am so invisible that I would be afraid I would fall off and no one would notice. My super power is the ability to shoot down snarky teenagers who think they know everything about horses with a single glare (when in fact, I have forgotten more than they will probably ever know).
                                      Am I in??
