Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • That's great Needy, I'm glad your team improved that much for ya - you'll start winning these thing in no time with that kind of progress

I found out the western arena that I trailer to has jumps! They're these pyramid things, and they are locked up, but as they were stacked on top of one another with only the top ones chained (2 piles of them) - I was naughty and pulled out two bottom ones to set up. I was alone, and I figured if people could break the rules for no barrel racing in public riding, I would break the no jumping in public riding rule

I set up a little xrail, just for something else to do. (I also didn't have a trainer present nor helmet so I figured I mind as well be safe than sorry) The fence was too small - which is a good feeling for me.

    • Uh oh Bluesy, you are more courageous than I to admit that you weren't wearing a helmet , I'll keep a lookout for the helmet nazis .

Glad you had fun though! You know, that's something I would do, with the afaidI'mgonnagetcaught butterflies in my stomache.

i know what you mean about doing things that are almost too easy for you. After my bad fall from Storm, just riding on a solid horse made me feel good. It was like, oh, yeah, THAT'S what effective riding feels like.

      • MITS (Mitzie?!), What kind of spreadsheets do you run, or what kind of PC do you run them on, that your Excel needs to sit and think?!!

There was a prolific author over fifteen years ago who wrote on his PC, then traded his 286 for the earliest 486. [Truly ancient history right? But I met my best friend 20 years ago using a 360 baud modem and a pre-internet local dial-up bulletin board system. Times do change. ]

This writer said that the first time he was working on a story and saved his work, he saved it twice because the processor performed the save so fast that he did not even see the screen blink when he hit 'enter,' so he wasn't sure it actually had been saved. Before that with his old PC, he wrote, he used to have time to reach for another cigarette while watched as the version of MS Word of the day saved his file.

I'm not invisible except when I post to a thread and suddenly it dies. I seem to have a gift for that.

        • To prevent Adamantane from killing another thread, maybe I should introduce myself:

I'm an invisible. Perhaps, by choice. I think I'm more a "lurker" than invisible, but they're fairly close to one in the same.

I'm from Ontario, Canada. I have a 22 year old Hanoverian gelding. He's absolutely wonderful. I've been riding him for 6 or 7 years now, and he was given to me last year. He showed in the jumper ring for a few years and then the hunter ring. He took care of my butt in the hunter ring for a few years and now we're working through his semi-retirment: no more o/f, but lots of flat work. Don't get me started talking about my horse, I won't stop (but I guess a few of you will admit to the same problem, no?).

I'm going to try to become less invisible, but we'll see how it goes - k?

            • Thank you, Kickyjz. Unfortunately now somebody else will need to post or all your efforts to stop me from once again being the thread killer will have been in vain.

Incidentally, I'm from Minnesota originally. We in Minnesota never thought our northern neighbors were slow, but in the US, the sense that neighbors are slow seems to run south.

Minnesota regards *everyone directly south* as being slow. Iowa regards *everyone directly south* as being slow. Missouri regards *everyone directly south* as being slow. Everyone in Arkansas regards *everyone in Louisiana* as being slow, and everyone in Louisiana is to busy trying to deal with the disaster that was Katrina to care much , one way or another, especially since they have pretty good food while nobody ever claimed that was true for Arkansas, unless you really like fried 'possum.

Good news! I have a lesson tomorrow (remember lesson=jumping), I'm a little worried about it though, since I haven't done it for so long - (I'm not counting the xrail ) but I am also excited!

In case anyone is wondering how my week has been, its been so-so. My horses ran poorly this weekend, which is a bummer after so many bang up efforts in a row. Out of 7 starts we had 2 wins, a second and 3 thirds. Til this past weekend - Boom Boom and Gemma both raced poorly. Gemma bled through lasix and will be given time off to let her lungs recover and heal. She was only beaten about 6 lengths, a decent effort. Boom Boom was closing on a strongly speed biased track, and beat a few, made up her ground but disliked the track, which was sloppy, slippery mud, like runny glue. But the speed all ran away from her and she had too little, too late. She was also trying to get out a little bit (hang on the right rein) and I dont know if this is a one time thing, or if the dentist missed something when he did her teeth... have to figure that out, maybe make a bridle adjustment. Good news is that she broke better and felt better than ever (soundness AND breathing -wise) to the jockey. Judging how a horse breaks from the gate is often a good indicator of their physical and/or mental well being. Improved breaking is an excellent thing - she is strong and sure in behind and able to push off her hocks to spring out of the gate, and comfortable enough to dig in from the front - no stinging anywhere keeping her from surging forward. So that's all good. We knew Gemma was going to need a break anytime, and now we are wishing we had done it before the last race. She loves going to the farm - especially eating grass. She can go join Blackjack at the farm and get even fatter, the big round sow. She already waddles when she walks. I can't imagine her as a broodie down the road - wider than she is tall. Darren calls her a bulldog.

Thanks for letting me vent guys. That horse last night really shook me up. "Max" is calling my name and telling me it's up to me to get him out of that dogfood can he is bound for. What a responsibility. He isn't my horse. But he doesn't have anyone else to stick up for him. Ack. Thank goodness I am going away for a few days. Mr Hobie will relay any messages from trainers wife.

                      • Aw Hobes...

What a story! I will try to give some money when the time comes. Sometimes I have more $$ than others. I have found a 24 acre farm I'd like to look at - called today to find the exact address, so I can do a drive by. Trouble is, we don't know if we're moving in a year - DH didn't get the promotion he should have . So, in a year, we may have to move. Don't know where but will try to move not so far away. Anyway, that's another story, but I do crave my farm when - someday - I can help guys like these. Got to 'save' a big dog type for DH for trail riding!

On a happier note, we're going to a horseshow this weekend! It should be fairly small, which I like. She'll go to show tomorrow w/ trainer and spend the night. I'll pick her up Friday b/c she has to work one of her little jobs here. Then we'll go back to show at crack of dawn Saturday. Don't know if we'll show Sunday or not - depends on how hot it is. And if it's storming - forget it! I won't be here to keep this topic alive this weekend, so hope y'all can giterdone!

Hobie Cat -- Sorry to hear about Gemma -- hope she enjoys her break and heals well!

This is my first logon in almost a week. I had a beloved boarder horse colic (he's doing well now, PTL), my 13 yr. old nephew visiting (we don't have kids) and my ring construction halted this week. We really needed the rain (sorry, I know it was way too much for some of you, but we were in a drought here), but did it have to come right when my ring construction started? Or when I had to entertain a 13 year old? Mud wrestling, anyone? It will be weeks before the ring dries out enough for them to bring the stone in! But at least we know the swales were cut well and it drains nicely. And I sent a disappointed boy home yesturday with very little time in the saddle.

                                        • I have been meaning to post here since this started but time has been my enemy lately...

I, too, am an Invisible. I am by no way part of the "in" crowd but that's pretty much the norm for me...never really have fit in anywhere. My life is pretty hectic as I live in upstate NY but "commute" to northern VA Mon-Fri for work. Boring job, software developer for a government contract (although I am not gov't myself) but it pays so I can take care of family and horsey. We have a "combined" home now with my parents, myself (am divorced) and my 10 y/o son...ah, yeah, interesting...lol. I did occasional trail riding since I was a kid but never really knew what I was doing and got into horses seriously just recently (took me till I was 32 till I could afford too). I have a soon to be 4 y/o Shire who thinks he's either a human or dog (but never a horse) depending on the day and **gulp** am actually going to be taking my first real riding lesson next week here in VA! Maybe now I'll be able to ride for real !

I'm probably also the only poster here who when they got their new horse, NEVER posted a pic of him. Not because I wasn't thrilled but because he looked rough, was in need of some groceries and tlc and was embarrassed/worried about getting not so nice feedback...oh well, he's mine and I love him dearly (and he's looking better and better every day!)
