Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • Invisible ????

Well, I can only hope to be for sometime in the day. I have 2 daughters and as for age gaps- well one is turning 25 in June and the other is turning 11 in July. As for the rest of my brood -- well, that consists of 2 TB's, 1 VERY small pony, 3 Pugs, and 2 Rotties. These are rescues expect for the pony which was purchased due to a VERY small (34lb) 5YO, who just had to ride like her older sister. Nothing like the fear of seeing a little one on the back of 16.1H horse to make you rethink the idea horse riding lessons.
Anyway, horse are our peace in life. There is nothing in my life like my baby, I still treasure the first moment she looked up when I called her from the field and came troting straight up to me, stopped, circled around me and put her head on my shoulder.
Here is to all the other "invises".....

All the freaking time. Wait, I think I will delete this...

OK, a little bit about me...I am a 36 yr old married pregnant person. That about sums it up. I had to stop riding due to the pregnancy, but I am OK with that. The love of my life is a Standardbred mare. You want to talk about invisible at horse shows? In Hunter classes? Yup, that was us. Then we moved to Jumpers. Much more fun. Still invisible, but we have a great time! I am also a foreigner. Moved here from Holland back in the 80's. So I am a foreign invisible. I am doubly handicapped. I have enjoyed this thread so much, I feel like I have come 'home'. But I have typed way too much...

            • How?

I'm baffled by how I can be posting on a board for a couple of years, rack up over 1200 posts, and still be invisible?

I've given good advice, been quoted, and even posted embarrassing pictures of myself and I'm invisible?
              Utterly weird...

Oh - I am a stay-at-home mom with two boys (The Gene Pool); a great husband who is a Civil Engineer; Baron, a Quarter Horse that was given to me three years ago and who has turned out to be quite talanted as a dressage horse; my Antique Mare who survived WNV two years ago at the age of 27 and who is quite happily mowing my sister's lawn; a dog and three cats. I'll be adding a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (a breed I've wanted since 1978) to the mix by the end of June.

I used to train Peruvian Pasos and the odd Icelandic in the eighties (until the Loma Prieta earthquake caused the barn owners to pack up their bags and move to Grass Valley) but have mainly groomed dogs (since 1978) for a living. I started that job because the local horse stable wouldn't take a chance on me. Too bad for them.

Currently, I am learning dressage and saddling up giant, rather excitable horses in exchange for lessons and board. I'm good at saddling. Lousy at dressage.
Don't tell me about what you can't do. That's boring. Show me what you can do. - Mom

              • Okay. I'll bite, too.

I'm Rachel, I'm a rising sophmore at Sweet Briar College (which has the prettiest campus in the world). College is pretty awesome, and I'm happy as a clam. At college, I ride three times a week. During the summer, I ride ponies once a week in Great Falls. I've told my trainer at home, "I'll ride anything, except for minature horses." I find it interesting how I'm a bit more timid with the well-trained schoolies at Sweet Briar, yet I have no trouble bossing around bratty hunter ponies at home. I do hunters/eq. My trainer suggested that I do 2 small eq divisions (2') at the Warrenton Pony Show. I'm super-excited about that, since that will be my first A show.

At college, I'm pretty involved with student government, various clubs, and orchestra. I'm a business major with a possible major or minor in economics (we'll see!). I like math, and numbers make me happy. After college, I'm thinking about becoming an accountant or perhaps a job in the financial world. I'm also hoping to spend at least a semester of junior year studying abroad in Austrailia (it seems like a cool place, and my dad has a lot of family there).

My hobbies (besides riding) including skiing at Wintergreen and playing the viola. I'm currently employed this summer at a retail slave in the mall. I work hard, but I'm happy. I have two small dogs named Rascal (a 7 year old cockapoo), and Sushi Roll (a 2 year old Shih-Tzu/Poodle). Both of them are the cutest and sweetest dogs ever.

                I think that's about it.

                • Love this!

I am on the down side of 40, am a research/data analyst for the state government, married 10 years and for the first time. We have 13 acres in Liberty Hill, 15 miles north of Camden. There we have nine Chihuahuas, three of which are puppies and already have new homes awaiting them (they are only 12 days old). We have three large dogs, a mastiff/lab cross, a border collie/something cross and a siberian husky. All are rescues, the latter two are recent acquisitions, young (10 and 8 months), that were abandoned at a kennel. The Mastiff/lab is about 4 years old and loves having some company. We picked him up as a stray puppy, too.

My family's farm is on the other end but same side of the county. There is where my sister lives, and so does my 12 year old TB mare. We are currently fencing more pasture and will then have at least one other horse so sister and I or sister/I and someone else can ride together. We both are thinking an Arabian this time. I'd like to get a large pony for my neices also.

Mr. TR is retired and playing gentleman farmer at the Liberty Hill place. We have a lovely vegetable garden and an herb garden in this year. He is also a gourmet cook so I almost never have to cook dinner when I get home at night, which is great because I have 50 mile commute to and from work. Thank goodness the family farm is between here and there! Mr. TR is from Virginia. I spent 20 years in the Washington DC area and lived 6 of them with Mr. TR after marriage, two in Maryland (where I'd lived the other 14 years) and 4 in Woodbridge, VA, before he retired and we decided to come back to my home in South Carolina.

I caught myself doing it earlier--I am SUCH an Invisible Fo 'Lyfe, sistahs!

Oh yeah, I have killed many a post, mostly because I try to follow the rule of only talking about what I know from direct experience/observation. That eliminates an awful lot... My worry is not that people WON'T read it, but that they WILL! In spite of that I am going to stand up and testify, because if not here, then where?

I am forty mumble mumble, have an OTTB who has survived chip surgery, stall rest and is now demonstrating a heart-stopping ability to buck and run in a small round pen. I shall soon see what he can do under saddle! He is the legacy of a project of mine, not a rational choice of a steed for a re-rider, but he is awfully charming and handsome and therefore I don't mind being his slave (yes, I confess I pick grass and dandelions to keep him busy in the round pen, hand-graze him and under the pretense of clicker-training him, stuff him with carrots). The remainder of my barn time is spent on rehabbing my own riding abilities under the supervision of a trainer whoses own horse is an OTTB and therefore does not question my sanity on a daily basis.

The rest of the menagerie consists of a dachshund, a JRT (lovingly raised by the dachshund - his reward is to be terrierized by her as his personal trainer) and two hand-raised pigeons who live in the back yard (after I dislodged their nest from over the arena, not realizing it was already occupied). Oh, and a husband who rode and taught for many years before knee injuries and frustration changed his career. I caught him boasting about what a nicely built horse "we" had to his mother on the cell phone last week... he has fallen under the spell as well!

I am enjoying this thread because it's like hanging out in a virtual barn, and also serves one of my other great passions.... reading (yes, every word you all wrote).

I remembered Circus Peanuts have a texture most like that of stale peeps, and are readily available at all the finer food emporiums (Wal-Mart, Dollar General, etc).

Ted did accept my introductory offering to him; as I recall he had about 6 of them last night. And he is a lovely boy, as well as a Peep connoisseur. And gracious: he did not audibly laugh at the hunter re-rider who sat in a treeless dressage saddle last night for the very first time in her life. And he certainly had every excuse for laughing: the phrase "god-awful" springs to mind when describing my stylish performance. But it was fun!
Quin, how sweet! And Ted had another 6 yesterday so I will need to buy more as they will stretch out the peeps collection.

And she makes it sound as if she rode worse than she did. What she neglected to tell you-all is that as I free lunged and then rode, I would say - whoops - see how he did this? That's because I did X. So while I cannot necessarily ride well, I am more aware of riding poorly. Ain't many people who can hop on a treeless dressage saddle when you are used to a treed forward seat and even know where to put your legs.

                            • For true sickness...RR and I had an agreement. I would send her a few boxes of petrified peeps, she would send me some Cadbury Crunchies from Oz. The exchange was recently completed. I was incredibly generous, I shared the wealth with my lab kids (RR implied to the Wee Morsels that petrified peeps were the work of the devil). One undergrad declared it should be the official lab candy, and started surfing the net to see where we could purchase and at what cost (computer savvy students are wonderful: here's a GUY who found a SALE. You just have to motivate them). Another student was dispatched to World Market to do the taste and cost comparison with Violet Crumble. So you see, science is so beneficial, because these students have learned how to apply literature searches and comparative studies to critical questions in Real Life.

Meanwhile...how to find the Crunchie sans chocolate coating so that it can be fed to Ted? This requires further research.

I can so relate! There's an awful lot of us that seem to be starting in dressage, or dabbling in dressage. Talk about a forum I'm totally invisible in -- in the dressage forum I'm invisible even to myself (where am I?). I'm interested, of course, since I'm starting out, but that is not a place I feel comfortable asking questions or having a discussion. Maybe we need to start a "recreational dressage" clique? Or some catchier name someone more creative than me can come up with...

Age 27, back in college, OT major, work at the barn where I board my very goofy OTTB, have ridden hunt seat most of my life, took a brief detour into dressage as a teen. Love anything chocolate or sugar-y.
We all got picked on as kids- My sister used to sit on my chest and hang spit loogies over my face- sometimes, she would suck them back up in time, sometimes, not! Chocolate is the best!

                                        • cosmos mom, that's horrible!
I never got loogied, but verbally lashed ALL the time. I had no quick comebacks, so I was an easy target.
But hey, rejection by the human race is what led me to horses! So it's not ALL bad.
BTW, Cosmo is AWESOME! I love Appy's.
