Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    • Dear Oaksbrae, thank you for volunteering to write! Can you please email me this story? I'll just collect them and distribute them to volunteer editors. This weekend, I'm going to write our goal of what to expect in the book and include few samples before I will send it out to a volunteer editor to see what she has to say about this thus far.

Dear all, if you have a story to write, please email it to:

      chris@flugsvamp.com
      and
      chris@trolltruffles.com

      Thank you!!!

Let's make this dream a reality!

      • Oaksbrae, I forgot to thank you for posting asking for reports!!! Thank you for the inspiration! Thank you!

As I mentioned before, English is not my language. Thus, I depend on volunteers to help with writing, collecting stories, fleshing out, provide honest opinions, etc. Can you do all of this with several other volunteers? I'd just do the same thing but I will always submit my work to volunteers for more editing. We can collect stories from several places in USA, Canada, and Mexico - even Europe! where the drafts are. The secret to successful completion of a project is the volunteers!!!!!

              • We need volunteers to help write this book, Gentle Giants. Please contact us when you want to volunteer. Or, better yet, please let us know if you have a story but do not want to spend time writing. We will help with the writing.....

Those gentle giants will love the book starring about themselves!

                  Okay, I'll bite

I'm not quite middle aged, but I do enjoy my draft gelding, so I'll pop in and say hello! Stan's a 7yr old 18hh Belgian draft, and I've had him since he was 8 months old. He rides and drives, has been shown in low-level Hunter classes, Halter, and Ladies Cart, trail rides, and can pack a 4-H child around a walk-trot pleasure class. He's pretty much your stereotypical big marshmallow of horse.

I don't think I have any really heartwrenching stories to tell. Luckily my experiences with Stan have been relatively uneventful.

What little I know about showing in draft shows I learned from the lovely lady who bred MuleLady's draft mules. She's just a real gem, very willing to share her knowledge with anyone who'll listen. Someone asked about draft lines with less knee action, and maybe MuleLady will chime back in - I know that Emma's dam and Emma's full draft half-sister had more of a long and low way of going to her, but I don't recall her lines.

                    • Maybe we need to start a new thread: DRAFT/DRAFT CROSS OWNERS...Book In the Works & We Need Your Draft Horse Stories?....or at least change the title of this thread to show the update?

I'm also gonna do a cross post over at Percheron Horse Network. Althought we're kinda small, I'm sure we can get a few stories out of them.

Prieta: I'm still working on fleshing out my story a little more. Should I send it to you when I think it's done for editing, etc.? Just lemme know!

                      • What kind of stories do you need? I some of the most influential people in my life are breeders of Belgians and are an inspiration to many. Are there specs? (sorry I don't have time to go through all the posts right now but would love to help in any way, I was always great in my Eng. Comp. classes! I might even have a story or two...used to ride a big Perch X and he was a BEAST!!) But I'm not middle aged quite yet though...

                          Title is changed.

I'm technically not middle-aged either - but I'm not *young*, which I think was my point. At least I think it was.

I don't think there are criteria other than the fact that it ought to reflect the very special relationship that you can have with one (or more) of these creatures.

                          • Hey - wassup?

Stories? Someone wants stories? For a book? What sort of book? Do you want any stories about my draft crosses? Because I tell you what - I got plenty - and they mostly involve me learning a lesson in physics.

How about my first season hunting - in which I did more piaffe, passage and half passes in one hour than what spectators can see in the freakin' Olympics - who says draft crosses can't do the upper levels! They just need 100 other horses, a hunting horn and a pack of smelly hounds!

Or the draft cross version of the "Crazy Ivan" of submarine lore - in which the draft cross wants to see what's behind him - but being so big and clumsy - decides the easiest way to accomplish this is to jump 4 feet in the air, spin, look behind him, jump 4 feet in the air, and face forward again - WHILE the owner is adjusting her stirrups and trying to drink from a flask at the same time.

Or the draft crosses who decide that jumping is stupid and it makes much more sense to just knock things out of the way.

Or the draft crosses who take one look at a driving harness and decide that today they are going to be a thoroughbred - not a plow horse.

Or the draft crosses who delight in giving wedgies to the farrier.

Or the draft crosses who gets the goat stuck in his fly mask and doesn't know what to do so he just carries the goat around until the fly mask velcro gives...

Or the draft crosses who scratch their butts on my brand new uber expensive gate and bend it into a "V".

Or the time my bestest buddy draft cross decided to try and die on me and the evil equine hospital didn't want me sleeping on a wrought iron bench in the parking lot and how happy I was when he decided not to die and he dragged me over to the trailer when it was time to go home?

                            Those kind of stories?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

                              • Someone asked what are the criterias for including stories in the book, Gentle Giants.

I need to remind all of you that this book will be mainly written by volunteers and a pusher - myself. thus, if you do not agree to the criteria, please let us know. If you want to add something else to the criteria, please let us know! We are open just as long as we include wonderful stories that will make you feel warm all over, cry with laughter, cry with the owners, etc.

I'd like to see the stories include:
                                1. of a horse that is at least 1/4 draft
                                2. how this draft makes you laugh
                                3. how this draft makes you cry
                                4. how this draft makes you think
                                5. how this draft is versatile - like he is a police horse, he is a fox hunter (my farrier who owns Belgians could NOT believe that there are some fox hunters!)
                                6. how this draft fits in the family
                                7. at least 1000 words (??) (enough words to fill in two or three pages with few photos)
                                8. you do not need to be middle aged.

Those stories must be true and will be verified. If you do not feel like you can write a masterpiece, you can refer to a volunteer for help with writing which I will most certainly do!

I've included this proposal to one of the volunteer editors. If there is anything you think need changing, please let us know.

"Gentle giants are drafts horses well known for their large and muscular stature; however, they are not well known for their gentleness and kindness towards us. This pictorial book is a collection of true stories showing how gentle giants strive to excel in our world. For example, an owner relates about how her giant grieved over the loss of her horse friend, a police giant rescued a lost little boy in the crowd, a giant playing a ball with the girl, and many more stories to be shown in this book, Gentle Giant".

                                Let's just do it!
                                Will get a dream horse!

However, (sorry to burst everyone's bubble) but we first NEED to check if
                                  A. there is such a book out already
                                  B. if "Gentle Giants" is taken (title),
                                  C. make sure these stories are ORIGINAL (no one likes reading about how the draftie pulled Billy-Jo-Bob out of the well a million times...)

and these also need to be relatable to the non-horse audience, because the book won't excel, grow, and flourish if we just aim for the horse people.

Again, sorry for bringing this up, but we need to think about some of the concequences BEFORE we get up to our ears in this.

                                  • Welcome to COTH, Dr. Kamen. I appreciate your concern but I do not see why you need to post here.

SillySunny, you have several good points here. I've done some of the searching and talking with few people. there are some points that need to be addressed which are:

                                    1. I cannot find a book about how we relate with the drafts - not on how to care for them or how to train them. But, stories about them.

                                    2. Pictorial book might be a bit too expensive for the general public. We might need to "imitate" Chicken Soup and use that for our book. the book will be cheaper and more accessible to wider audience.

                                    3. We need to find a publisher that is willing to publish "paperback" book about drafts.

Do you all agree to this?
                                    Will get a dream horse!

                                      • Prieta, I'll send you an email. Mr. chai and I have rescued quite a few horses, but our draftie was a real, live purchase from a wonderful man who loved him a lot. There were tears and hugs when my Shire was delivered to me. I still think about his previous owner and I think he would be so happy to know that his 'boy' is still so well loved.
I'm also happy to help write, too.

                                        • Here's a story for you, happened on Sunday morning.

Homer (aka Homie, Homes, hey you, etc) is a 17+ draft/TB. We have no idea what flavour of draft went into him. What came out is a big bay with tree-trunk legs and the most gorgeous sweeping shoulder I've ever seen, a laid-back trusting personality, and a propensity to drool. Give Homer an apple, get a bath in return.

Homer went trailing on Sunday for the first time. He is young, only 6, and started late. The steering and brakes are there, for the most part. He went with a BS Paint filly named Molly who came up to his armpit and a midsize app cross gelding named Dakota. Molly's rider is also quite small--we all thought he must have been a jockey in a past life--and Dakota's rider is also medium height. I'm 5'10 and riding the 17.2 giant. This lead to some hilarity on the trail, as Homer would walk right up behind Molly, nearly walk right OVER her, and get the most priceless surprised expression on his face as he looked down and saw another horse there. Molly was a saint about the whole thing, and more interested in the tasty green stuff on the ground than being run over by a big bay bulldozer.

On the trail, we encountered the following:
A semi truck at point-blank range
A man with a weed whacker
A bunny rabbit running under Homer's feet
                                          Horse-eating mailbox monsters
                                          Assorted loose dogs
Rude drivers going well over the posted speed limit

None of these got so much as a flicked ear, although the dogs did warrant him looking at them with both eyes. Then we passed the patch of kudzu, and that was enough to send him into a full-blown bugeyed snorting shaking spook. Go figure...the one thing that is attached to the ground, does not move, and does not make noise was the thing that scared him.
