Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Oh, Alex is really a dream. What a good boy, I wouldn't tell anyone about that wabbit that stole my shoe either!

My little (I say little because he is just really little after looking at my other big butted horses) is turning into such a character. He is from the farm where my filly is being trained. I have had him home for two weeks today. When I first started working with him at his old home, he wanted NOTHING to do with people and would just about jump out of his skin when touched. I actually thought he was the geekiest ugliest looking thing (alot of it was his personality). Now, he is just the funniest little guy. He has been kind of poking at his horse balls. This morning when I turned them out, he picked up his eggbutt ball, started shaking it like crazy, and then was just racing around his paddock with it in his mouth, the thing was just bouncing off of him like crazy. This, a horse just 3-4 weeks ago you could barely touch him, now he is just a BIG goober! Gotta love these guys.

And my mare (mom to my two year old) just LOVES this boy, she will stand there and lick his side and neck till they are all wet. She just loves babies and young horse so much. It is just funny to see such a big horse be so gentle and loving with a smaller horse like that.

Hmmm, reading about the goobers liking toys makes me wanna get a jolly ball just to see what Tank would do with it. Penny...well I already know the answer to that one. She'd look at, sniff it and then stare at me with that "And the purpose of this is what?" look.

NJDriver, I'll go over to the burn unit and ask if they'd like to get in touch wiht you and get your stories. I think that your picture posters will sell well to hospitals needing "inspiration" posters for their patients. thank you.

Is there anyone of you who is willing to send in pieces of their stories and pictures about your drafts and yourself? Is there anyone who is willing to help with the book? I'm willing to compile them together just as long as someone is willing to help with the editing.

Chai and Draftdriver, do you have any useful advices and suggestions on how we can put together a book?

        Let's get started!

Um, yup. See possible story submission above. I'll do whatever I can to help edit, etc.

Your submission is the first one! I apologize for not thanking you right away.

I love it and will be happy to see it fleshed out some more. If we can insert pictures of them, then it will be much more meaningful. Just think about how a reader sitting in the comfty of a chair pouring over pictures and stories. I hunger for many many horse stories; thus, I think I'd help out satitiate my hunger by collecting them.

Do you want you want to flesh it out or one of us to flesh it out? I do not know how many words we will need. We will need a team to help out......

I'm thinking of a coffee table type book like the one I like very much ," A Passion for Horses: True stories of lives lived loving horses" compiled and edited by Cindy Hale and photographed by Sharon Fibelkorn. The difference between our book and that book is that it will be more intimitately written about drafts and their ladies. Not well accomplished riders but ladies (maybe gentlemen? I'm thinking of my farrier who loves his Belgians) who adore their drafts to no end! That might help to draw more readers to this book?

Hey, how about the title of this book, "Modern Lady Godivas and their beloved Drafts"???? Any idea for the title?

I'd be glad to "flesh" it. Just figured I'd do the quick once-over for here.

I'll have to munch on the title.

I am so excited about seeing that book under the Christmas tree a few years from now and savor each page slowly!

I do not have a good story about Fairy just yet. I apologize for that. but, when we do have a good story, I'd be sure to write one!

I feel embarrassed to ask on how can we get in touch with Kim via PT. I need to have her sign on then I can "press on her name" to send her a PT.

                        www.lulu.com looks promising!

the photography work done by Tarheel look so beautiful - in a way, reminds me of Archie Lieberman's work. that is what we want - capture the soul and beauty of ladies and their drafts by looking at their eyes and their relaxed posture. If a lady needs to cry, photo ought to capture the depth of her sorrow to move the reader to cry along with her.

I would love to find a draftx

OK after my last horse a draft cross or as they are now called an American Warmblood would be right up my alley. Hey I am going to be middle aged soon enough.

I have a question for you knowledgable ladies, are there any lines that don't have that pony knee action.
I would love a cross that had a nice flat kneed trot. That and temperment are my 2 highest criteria. And of course, the price-must be lower than a european sportscar.

I have a Clydesdale/Standardbred cross and, for sure, I got the best of both breeds. While she's built, colored and feathered like a Clyde, she moves like a Standardbred. Flat kneed and a trot to die for! She can out trot most horses and we even pass cyclists on the road.

As a matter of fact, the woman I got Penny from has another of the same cross for sale:

Prieta, I do a lot of editing as part of my full-time job, and, as I've said, I've sold quite a few articles to various magazines. I can give a hand with editing. What we need is to find a suitable publisher (Reynard Ridge maybe could give us a hint?) and approach the publisher with a project proposal and some sample stories. We don't want to duplicate the direction of existing publications such as Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul (please pardon me if I don't have the title quite right). We need a fresh direction.

Also, perhaps it is not the best to put your stories here on the board. Publishers will often not accept work if it has previously appeared on the internet, as then it is considered to be 'published'. My major magazine editor won't even take pictures I've posted to bb such as COTH.

This sounds like it could be a lot of fun!

We have a Perch/Tbd and Perch Qtr who are pretty flat kneed, so I think you can find it in most of the crosses. But if its comfort you are looking for take a look at some of those knee lifters. Our Ned who had a pretty good wing and higher knee action had THE most wonderful trot I've ever ridden. Posting was completely natural feeling, so was sitting trot, there was just a lovely rocking motion from his back, unlike our more traditional movers with BIG strides and the inherent big trot/harder to ride/sit. All the motion was absorbed in the leg and the back saw smooooooooth.

We tried to find it again in a short draft cross, but hadn't found another like it before we ran across Cooper who's big kind eye and personality said - take me home.

Prieta - Glad to help if we can.

RE book... I agree with including all who love drafts and crosses / only flesh I'm showing is the horse's

Great!!!!! I'm so happy to read all of those help! I'll start collecting "short stories" as posted on COTH and contact the members to either flesh it out or allow us to flesh it out. This way, the short story on COTH will not be the same as we will flesh it out for the book. Oh, it might help alot if each volunteers can collect 5 stories? I'm not a superwoman but am willing to help make this dream a reality.

You mention that we need to make it "different" from the other books - draft horses? In my other life as a PhD candidate doing extensive researches, we do not need to make an entirely different paper from the others. We can make "one screw" different from the other papers to show how "this screw" can make a diffference. Will the topic, Draft horses with their affectionate owners be sufficient? If that is not sufficient, then how can we make it any more different? We have enough books on how to train horses. I agree that we need to come up with a clearly defined goal of how exceptionally this book is going to be and that readers will want to get a hold of that.

I think that a clearly defined goal of what to expect from this book is a starting ground. Can anyone pitch in?

                                        • For some reasons, I think that the goal of collecting stories about "rescuing" draft horses or caring bring about great result....Like NJdriver's story, Chocomare's story, the other posting about special moment with horses - two members one with a blind horse and the other one - don't remember what?

I'm mumbling and am trying to clearly define a goal that will help to make this book an excellent one! I'm taking out one line at a time to see if it is glorious!

I'll go ahead and print out those "stories". Cannot wait to hear inputs!
