Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

yeah, i guess you wouldn't know what is true and what isn't if you weren't there --- but I was, for part of it ... but who would physically abuse a "foal" in the presence of dozens of people? sorry, but the whole thing just doesn't wash...... the parent of the child did tell her to get off the pony as the pony was getting annoyed and wasn't moving forward, it wasn't rearing or bucking or being hit (i know she didn't have a crop and was only wearing runners, so couldn't even kick it hard)..... so yeah, you wouldn't know, but I do know, and this tropicalstorm person is LYING - if this other girl was wearing a spaghetti top when she rode, well .... call the SPCA....! what has that got to do with anything???? but i do take great offence to the part of the incident I did witness as i know it is completely false and believe me, it won't end here. you can't lie like this and get away with it. it is a cheap attempt for attention and sympathy. and the only sympathy she will get is from making gross exaggerations to draw attention to an other wise sad life -- why else would anyone do this? if it was true, i think any of us who witnessed it would be sheepish and not say anything (and believe me, i wouldn't have stood by an allowed ANYONE to abuse a horse) -- but she is lying - as the truth never makes quite as interesting a story, does it? - - and given what i saw -- am more than willing to stand up and say so. what she describes was not physically possible given the child, pony, equipment and events - these are facts not opinions - and if none of you have called her nasty nasty posts and comments in to question before - then SHAME ON YOU! going on here to create a drama out of nothing to draw sympathy and ooohs and awwws is more sad than annoying --- but the fact that people ACTUALLY believed this is truly distressing.... what a load of crap basically........ i wish i had filmed this, to prove what a liar she is..... but it simply wasn't possible and she is lying for dramatic effect...... sorry to those of you who got on your 'high horses' calling out the animal rights folks, because, gawd forbid a horse was ridden by a girl in a 'skimpy' top... find another cause. riding a 3 year old pony bareback, in a halter (no bridle), in jeans and runners without a crop or spurs is hardly abusive.... aren't TB's ridden at 2? don't you tropicalstorm dressage riders use big time SPURS and long dressage whips?????? this kid had nothing ---!!!

she is so full of crap i don't even know how to respond -- what a f***ing b***h with a huge chip on her large shoulder.

well troll or no troll (whatever that is), it is the only time i have ever posted to a bb, i usually just read and enjoy the dialogue (and have never seen an incident where i had exceptional information). but this is the only time i recognized an event that i actually witnessed. 'tropicalstorm' can reply anyway she likes, but i remain steadfast in what i witnessed and both she and i know she is lying. what the rest of you believe, quite frankly is immaterial. unfortunately, contacting pc authorities is an extreme reaction to a girl wearing a spaghetti strap shirt to ride in - but, then perhaps that is what you people do (and we have in our club besides the regular executive, a visiting commissioner, 3 trainers, one physician, 2 nurses and a paramedic) all of whom would recognize injury in any animal - including equines and humans. yes i am new to this, and only replied because of the slanderous nature of the information posted. but can assure you that no posting would have been made except for the extreme and inflammatory nature of the disinformation posted by 'tropicalstorm'.

believe what you like, but you can't 'know' what happened unless you were there. i was. and perhaps, some maturity and consideration should be applied before accusing people of abuse. what is saw was never approaching abuse. what i read was. lies, innuedos, falsehoods, and people reacting to an angry post but an obviously angry teenager. i know, i have 2 of them myself! tropicalstorm should be taken to task, and i for one, will continue to pursue it. to insunuate abuse against people who have never had more consideration for horses and their welfare is intolerable. what a farce.

sorry, thoughts over-ran typing ability.... 'what I saw' and 'innuendos' are more accurate representations of typing ... who'd know i had a grad degree with this crappy typing... but i've decided not to hyperventilate over the crap this kid put on the board, just decided to accept she is wicked, and shouldn't be allowed to de-rail one of the few clubs in the north america that provides (free of charge) horses/ponies to ALL children who want to join (and provide transport and tack) because many children without $$ want to ride and we give them that option ...... and we cover fees/clinic costs etc. for kids without the funds..... but whatever..... if bouncy boobs will get us in trouble --- then bring it on!!! gawd.

final note, then i'm done with this juvenile crap. 'tropicalstorm' has a HUGE rant about her 'evil spawn' neighbours on this site, that includes a threat to "kill their children" if they come on her property again. pleasant.

              enough said.

I am not going to defend myself except for saying that I saw what I saw and interpreted it.

The kid WAS on the 2 year old, and smacked him hard with the fist two times that I saw. I really can't say if the mother asked her to get off or not - I didn't stick around. So perhaps you are completely right. However, she was kicking the pony hard, irregardless of the fact that she wore sneakers-and there's no possible way that can be denied.

GWN - I don't even know where you saw me, so umm ya. I wasn't even out by the ring or anything. I was sitting in a black car by one of the barns and left once to go to the washroom and stop by the arena once...I don't know who you are, nor do I really want to if you actually support all of this. All I saw was two ladies sitting on a bench and a girl on the sidelines taking pictures of the lesson. My friend didn't ride because she had her lesson times screwed up but I came down to watch with her anyways-and regretted it.

The advanced jumpers WERE jumping minimally 3ft. And both riders were listing to the side at very large intervals. If I was off a couple of inches, sorry. I didn't stick around long enough to check. In fact, most of the time I stayed in the car and watched the lesson (which is where my observations came from), some girl take pictures and the horses in the pasture-so if I missed some things, sorry.

The trainer DID tie the kid around the waist, which is not only incredibly stupid and dangerous, but it was not a one time occurence either. The pony Clubbers tell me that she does it on a regular basis, which would, if I was a parent, make me extremely nervous.

I am not here to sling mud on any specific trainer or person really, which is why I didn't use names or changed them so that no one could actually be like "Hey...it's XX. I'm never training with her again." It was just my reaction and my friend's reaction to seeing these events unfold. I was extremely dissappointed and upset at what I saw, and I was not the only one.

I saw what I saw and interpreted it as such. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe not. I did however talk to some fellow Pony Clubbers and they were not too surprised to hear about it, so maybe I wasn't as far off base as greatwhitenorth seems to believe.

In my opinion, a horse is the animal to have. 1300 pounds of raw muscle, power, grace, and sweat between your legs - it's something you just can't get from a pet hamster.

I'm a newbie here, but it seems weird to me that a brand new poster arrives here who just happened to be at the scene described by the OP, which, to me anyway, didn't really give enough information for anyone to know that they had been at the same event. Except for the fact that it was a pony club lesson in Alberta Canada, which last time I checked is a really big place. Is there only one Pony Club lesson in the entire province of Alberta?

Not that I'm taking sides, after all anyone can be lying here. I'm just saying......

I don't care who's telling the truth. It doesn't matter because everyone witnesses things differently and interprets them differently.

I will, though, give kudos to Tropicalstorm for not sinking to the level of GNW. TS: You answered that quite politely.

Obviously GNW has a bone to pick. That's fine. Pick away...but to get so viciously nasty on a public BB, is in my not so humble opinion, behavior that is more attributable to another teenager...not a 40-something YO person who should know better by now.

It is possible to call someone to the carpet for spreading lies, etc. in a constructive and firm manner without resorting to filthy language and veiled threats.

                              hi guys
I was also present at this ride and am sorry to hear tropical storm exaggerate and misrepresent the events she has described.
I think GWN is right about people looking for drama and not realizing the consequences of what they post. I believe your Rule #3 for posting indicates that you are responsible for your statements. Own up Tropical Storm - you have already backed down on several items from your original statement. And I can verify several others are false.
With regard to the competence of the trainer, she currently trains with Kip Jones and has been approached by John Anderson who, if you are familiar with the area, are both well respected trainers. Can you say the same? Can we see you ride so we can rip apart your faults? These girls are here to learn - apparently we are not all so perfect as yourself!
Also, what a shame all you people have no mind of your own and no interest in actually acquiring the truth. With such serious allegations, wouldn't you take the time to verify this information?

I owned up to not witnessing the whole events.
However, I seem to be getting attacked here.
                                Maybe I misinterpreted some stuff.
Maybe you are all happy with things as they are, and that's fine. To me though, it seems unsafe for both the rider and the horse-and that's something I won't back down from.

Who knows. My friend was in the car with me though and said that she had never seen a lesson that bad from that specific trainer. So I can't judge that. Maybe it was the kids riding, a bad day, bad timing or whatever.

On the other side though, these riders were apparently happy. The people on the sidelines were happy. Heck, even the person taking the pictures seemed to be happy.

So maybe I DID misinterpret things. It is not what I'm used to seeing at training barns or Pony Club. I apologize. Apparently I took things out of context and did not see the situation as clearly as I thought.

Please accept my apology boulangerb and greatwhitenorth. You obviously know the trainer and the way she trains. I do not. It seems I am in the wrong.

I did not want to admit that I was out there-because apparently there is a whole lot of you who are affected.

This is hard, because while I don't believe I misinterpreted, apparently I did. To a large scale. And that's hard for me to accept or admit. I guess it seems almost like I lief, and for that I am deeply deeply sorry.

It was not something I was used to seeing and obviously I blew it out of proportion. I hope those involved can forgive me. I have learnt a lesson here to make sure I check out my facts thoroughly, because it seems that I just assumed.

I would certainly email or phone the Canadian Pony Club and tell them what you saw. They can probably make some sort of advisory to the local club and the region regarding some of the behavior witnessed.
