Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • She's an idiot. The kiddie books must not be selling...she resorts to porn when she's not getting enough attention. I swear there's a pattern to these things.

But those first few pictures of the horses coming out of the earth (sans Madonna) were very cool.

I agree with getting attention. That's what stars do. But where do you see porn? There's dumb suggestive stuff with leather and cigarettes, but porn? She's fully clothed, except for the back shots, and the boobs in No. 11 -- which I might add, hang appropriately for a mom of two and show little more cleavage than one might see at a mall.

      • How do you not see the porn???

Let me ask you this: do you NOT see the STRONG sexual inuenndo implied in these pictures, or miss the fact that these horses are described as "six stallions" (which considering their complete lack of interest in each other in such close proximity of each other I find HIGHLY unlikely considering the normal behavior of stallions when in each others close company) To many people the idea of a "stallion" is often seen as a very sexually powerful image to begin with. So if she isn't trying to put across such strong sexual undertones in these pictures why not "six geldings" or even just "six horses"? No the point is being further driven home by calling them "stallions" The bondage type harnesses and outfits she is wearing are meant to push this point even further as well as the sexually provocitive positions she is seen in.
Please give me a break here; to claim to not see the "porn" aspect of sexually provocitive photos involving animals of any kind whether horses, dogs or donkeys is just being in denial.
This is a woman who's based her entire career on being sexually explicit and trying to shock people into paying attention to her. She has a mediocre singing ability but she is very good at doing things that push the envelope and usually in a very cheap and trashy way.
Let me ask you this; how would you feel about these pictures if they were of your daughter or of you're young enough - your mother?
Its just one more pathetic attempt at more press and attention in the only way she knows how to get it.
Toaday she an "avid horsewoman" tomorrow she'll be something else and we'll be graced with a whole new photo shoot with equally distasteful crap that will be a spin-off of her next invented persona.
This woman has had SO many different "personas" you have to wonder if there's anyone real inside that head of hers at all?

        • Beastiality falls under porn in my book. If it's art, than it is to be interpreted by the viewer (me) and I interpret it to be some sort of wierd sex fantasy that includes her, and horses. It's art, right? I can't be wrong...it's just how I interpret it. These shots are within the soft limits which would be actual porn (but that magazine does have SOME limits I'd suppose). Her book, titled SEX was porn. I bought the book because I worked at a record store back then --and saved it for a day when I'd need extra cash (Gotta love ebay...sold it for $330 a couple years ago, unopened). I'm not a prude...but resorting to such antics seems so, I don't know...immature and *trite*. It was amusing when she was single-ish and 30...it's not even remotely amusing now that she sells childrens books and is a mum.

          • disgusting...

I think the photos smack of domination and bestiality, practices that I find extremely repulsive and sick. I can hardly understand how a mother (despite her past) could possibly pose for such photos and look at herself in the mirror. And to think that another thread about celebs riding stated that it was great to have stars like her (Madonna) bring attention to our sport(s). Personally, I would rather it stay in the shadows than be represented by such common baggage. If only our illustrious Aunt Esther, the doyenne of good taste, would care to comment....

Bingo! This is why, try as hard as she might, she just can't act very well in movies or on stage. Everyone supposedly has something 'real' at their kernel, but she seems to have a hard/impossible time accessing her authentic self in order to mine it for it's essential truth. On film and stage, she just comes off FAKE FAKE FAKE and BAD. and not in a tee hee naughty way.

I personally believe that people have a right to showcase their body as they see fit, within the confines of the law. And Madonna is certainly doing that. If I had half the body she does, I would show it off too! It seems like there's an awfully lot of frumpy old ladies on this thread who are jealous and pissed off that somebody in the world just "might" look a little sexier than they do

And for anyone who feels these animals are being sexually exploited or treated in a sexually inappropriate manner, all you need to do is contact PETA and they'll rush in and save the ponies for you! *laugh* Then you'll feel all better and you can move on to the next problem you can dig up on the internet. You could try focusing on the starving and abused horses at all the rescues. Or you could focus on the abused horses within various disciplines. Surely that would reap more reward than griping about Madonna laying down on a horse wearing what equates to a bathing suit.

Have you never gone swimming with your horse and worn your bikini? I have. I rode the horse bareback in the lake in my bikini. In fact, I was wearing as few or less clothing than Madonna is wearing in these photos. So was I sexually exploiting and sexually abusing my horse in doing so? Hardly. Why do you people have to overdramatize EVERYTHING?

This thread reminds me of the chick a few years back who wanted to file a lawsuit against all the dairy farms in the United States for "sexually abusing" cows by inappropriately fondling their utters and teats through the process of milking. ROFLMAO.

This response has me utterly amazed. First of all there are many levels of "porn" and this would definately fall into them. The very strong sexual undertones in this photo spread implying a sexual connection between a woman and a horse would very definately fall under "beastality fetish photos". Then you have all the whips and leather - this really adds to the S&M aspect of the photos, and the topless shots - all very definately meant to be sexually explicit. Maybe you are used to more hard core blatant pornography but dear this is definately in the same catagory just a bit milder.

As for those of us that don't like this crap being a "lot of frumpy old ladies" who are "jealous and pissed off that someone in the world just might look a little sexier than they do" Get a grip honey. I'm the last person I would call a frumpy old lady and I promise you the last person I will ever find myself jealous of is Madonna.
I spent my entire professional life working in the top levels of the music industry (including with your dear Madonna early in my career - it was early in hers too so I saw her operate first hand and as I said before; she repulsed me then just as much as she repulses me now) As for this being a "sophisticated, European style photo spread" - excuse me? I don't think so. This is nothing more than another Madonna shockumentary. My Mother is an award winning fashion editor and she heartily agrees with me. This is nothing more than soft core porn.

And the last thing I want to mention is that I don't understand your little rant about people calling PETA if they feel the horses were abused during the shoot. I haven't seen anyone saying that any horses were abused just commenting on what trash the photos are. I think you might want to re-read the thread. Also to compare the contents and implied fetish qualities of these photos to swimming with your horse in a bikini is just to naive to even comment on.

I think its funny that you feel you need to attack the people who find this stuff to be garbage and who have a different opinion of this woman than you do. Hell you don't even know the woman in question just the multitude of personas she's put out through her career. Trust me these weren't meant to be "artistic" they were meant to have "shock value" - period.

Well she's been having lessons with William Fox-Pitt and has been riding Moon Man, so one would like to assume that she has a reasonable level of competence!

I think she enjoys pushing people's buttons and she is very good at it, obviously. That being said I also think her "artistic" photos are just porn. I give it 2 thumbs down.

I don't know why I so like this thread. Probably because it is in only mildly horse related. Like the "nothing" thread I so loved.

In any case, the US Supreme Court did, in it's time (with a different cast) define pornography as something sexual (forgive if I don't quote exactly) utterly lacking in any kind of social, artistic or other value. Madonna's photo shoot is arguably whatever, but it's not lacking in any of the above.

For some, it may be erotic. For others, irrelevant. But I don't think that it's porn -- if that word is to retain any meaning.

BTW, thanks to someone who pointed out the horse tail hat. I had no idea of what that thing was.

                                • Okay, I'm finally going to bring myself to post. I do like a couple of the pictures...not the ones where she's smoking in a stall , can we say burn down the barn (now, for acuracy, I realize this was in a sound stage, or something like that) or the weird poses, but I do like the ones that showcase the horses more where they're not in stalls (I know, few and far in between).

I have to admit that I've always liked and respected Madonna as a career woman. She may not be the world's best singer, and frankly I find myself embarrassed for her in some of the antics that she's pulled off. BUT...look at what she's made of herself. She's known world wide, she's worth millions, ?happily? married, with two beautiful children, in amazing shape, and hugely successful. She is a marketing genius. And frankly, I think you have to respect that.

As for the pictures - I do think they are very sexually charged. Not necessarily porn, but not something I'd let my 6 year old daughter see. For that matter though, I wouldn't let my daughter see the higher end fashion magazines like Vogue, or Elle either. Alot of the spreads in those magazines are comparable to Madonna's. But, being an ex-model myself, that's basically what the industry is. The only photo shoots that don't sell sex are the department store catalogues like Sears, The Bay, and the like.

To paraphrase what other posters have said, Madonna is creating buzz with these pictures. Imagine how many magazines are going to sell. By continuing this thread, and continuing to talk about her, you're doing exactly what Madonna wants. Giving her publicity... which fits in well with her upcoming concert and album release.

And sorry about the too oft used line but.....if you don't like it, don't look.
