Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Check the Exceller BB here http://exforg.proboards32.com/index....ead=1124853308 This is our Transportation forum. Of the first four, I think at least three of them could possibly help you out. The trainer could also talk to you about these people, as they are all "track people." They may be able to give you better rates than the larger guys.

Also, you'll have a check coming to you via snail mail, to help with the transportation. I hope that maybe others can chip in a bit to help get Miss Windy to her new and loving home.

Take a look at where she will be going http://www.petsalive.com/index.html

I think she'll enjoy life there.

I think it's sad that so many people on this thread AUTOMATICALLY assumed that a companion was the right job for this filly, when she's worked (race work, jumping) pretty darned hard with never a lame step and by accounts loves it. Who among US has perfect conformation? Not ME, and I can walk and run just fine and intend to all my life.

I'm a bit conflicted too. Don't get me wrong - I'm thrilled that Windy will be going to a wonderful home, but I can't help but wonder if that means that another horse who is definitely not sound but equally deserving will not....

I thought some about that too. However, no one stepped up to the plate until after Pets Alive did. Twiceshy kindly offered to look into her after that happened, but we were already in the process of setting things up with Pets Alive. And, it was lucky that we did as it turned out, as you can see from an earlier post, that Twiceshy would have been unable to take this horse.

Besides, realistically, there are very few horses who are not content to hang out in a pasture all day and get groomed, fed and loved on. I have a feeling that Windy will find this a perfect situation. And, her trainer, who knows her better than any of us, is just thrilled that she is going there. All in all, I think that it is probably the best thing that could have happened to this girl.

            It's all good!

She's going to be so happy and loved. We'll just have to make make a plan for that lame, hard to place one that will come along.... I'm trying to rebuild my equine emergency fund back up. Perhaps it will be healthy again and there will be room in a pasture when the need arises

Louise is right Horses are so happy to just be horses, with another horse!

And really folks.. we are all seasoned horse people here.. how long was she going to stay sound on those fetlocks? IMO it is best she is a companion horse. Lucky girl.

                The Next Lame Horse

Perhaps we can help more than we think we can.

We have 40 UNDEVELOPED acres that paddocks and a barn could be built on - we don't have the funds to do it but just maybe we can get some help here 'one at a time' as we need it for the very hard to place horse. If we all work together miracles can happen.

PetsAlive, that is a very generous offer, and I, too, am very glad that you have chosen to join us on this board. We have so many kind and generous people on this board, who have stepped in time and time again, to save some poor horse, somewhere. You're right, together we can work miracles.

                      Transportation help

Guys, we really need your help getting Windy to her new home. Like all rescue operations, neither organization is exactly flush. Exceller just pulled a horse off of the feedlot, and assisted in another rescue as well, so the funds are low, and I know that Pets Alive is in the same situation.

If you could go to Pets Alive - http://www.petsalive.com/index.html and donate anything you could, it would really help.

I missed this thread when it was first posted, and am so glad that Windy has a new home in the wings.

I wanted to comment a bit on her pasterns/ankles, as I've dealt with similiarities in the past. Without having seen her in person, it's hard to tell for sure but I'm thinking one of two things gives her the 'shocking' appearance. If she doesn't actually knuckle over at her ankles - looks like maaaybe she does by the right side conformation shot, hard to tell if it's an optical illusion however - looks like it's just osselets on top of very upright pasterns with horribly long feet/bad angles. She's got the osselets for sure, probably due to her conformation taking an extra hit with the concussion of training/racing. (Extra big honkin' osselet on the front right). If this is the case with her, fixing those feet up and some time off will make a HUGE difference in the asthetic appearance of those legs. HUGE HUGE HUGE. If she does actually knuckle over (and I don't want to sound alarmist here) she could have bigger problems. I knew a horse once that had a similiar problem, he'd actually knuckle over. He was just two, and the more he grew the worse it got. He was lame on & off. It had to do with malfunction/deformity of the suspensory apparatus. He would have been a candidate for surgery had he been younger, but it was too late and the horse was euthanized because "It would only get worse". Not to say I agreed with that decision, but he was taken to the university for diagnostics & such. This mare is four, and much closer to being done growing than the horse I knew - or may have the same thing but not nearly to the degree of the horse that I knew. I REALLY think it's her osselets, and the placement of them (right smack dab on the lower front of the ankle) that makes it look so much worse than it might be. Even on the shot from the right, it still looks like her pastern is straight up & down, not necessarily knuckled forward. All just speculation on my part, of course - boy, I wish I could see her in person! - but she's very intriguing to me because of that little horse I knew once that was euthanized. I was absolutely smitten with him.

She can be made much more comfortable and much more asthetically pleasing regardless of the actual condition by getting those feet addressed. No way I'd be jumping her (but that seems to be a moot point now).

So glad she's getting a home - if I didn't already have my one personal horse quota filled, I'd have jumped on this gal in a heartbeat. She's EXACTLY my type.

Lucassb, I am the most computer useless person around. Here's what I found. If you go to the very bottom of the Pets Alive home page, you'll see a tab marked "donate now through Helping.org" I think that is where you go to make a donation.

So, what did I do? I sent a check via snail mail, so I was sure I didn't mess up, lol.

Sorry for coming in late (just got back from the Hospital/whole other story!), but I did learn that transportation costs are needed in order to get this filly to her destination.

Just contributed my part - thanks Louise for putting up the info on where to find it on the PetsAlive site. With any luck and the generousity of others this beautiful filly should be on her way! Thanks!

Some horses do not take well to being shipped. Give her a few days before you make too many decisions about her or her past.. we have horses come in from private barns who are nervous and seem "disconnected" for a few days.

Regardless, she is with you now and will be fine!
