Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

As Equinetech's dad is now back from active duty, she has sent him, in his official Luka's Grandpa and Official Horse Show Dad capacity to Target, Walmart, Albertsons, Fred Meyer, Payless, BiMart, Safeway, HiSchool Pharmacy, and all local neighborhood drugstores in search of Peeps...

not a box to be found.

Rest assured we will treasure and ration our Peeps sent from our dear friend Ted the Peep Ho. And as soon as Sparkle the IVth arrives on or about May 17th we will immediately begin imprinting him or her with Peeps.

EquineTech - it seems the Pacific Northwest and the Gateway to the West share the same Peep Crisis. I would even be willing to offer the red Tar-zhay peeps to Ted, nay I would willing to embrace the opportunity. You see how desperate we have become.

Yes...at first I hesitated but then when everyone was like 'peeps are 90% off at Tar-zhay' I thought hmmmm....because no one wants to eat them [perhaps b/c they look like the devil?] I shall send Luka's Grandpa to Target where he will buy cases and cases of Peeps and we can send Ted a whole case!

*alas*, it was Not To Be. Someone else had gotten there before Dear Ol Dad. Someday I think, when I'm old and crotchety like Aunt Tally in the Mrs Murphy Mystery series I am going to name a racehorse Mr Peeps.

Really???? Yo - Rt66Kix....we neeeeed you!!!

I have to act quickly. I can just see Ted, with a bandana somehow tied on his muzzle below his eyes (or maybe just using a fly mask?), trotting into the CVS across the JB Bridge and pinning his ears as he flings box after box of peeps onto the counter...he'll need a driving pony with a huge empty cart for the get away.

I was talking to the lady at one of our local stores and she said that Peeps really flew out the door this year.

              No left overs

Local newspaper had a contest involving Peep Art but I am sure everyone is just catching on to the fun you can have with Peeps

Last summer we had a hide and go Peeps hunt on a large property my family spends a long weekend on. I hid 18 peeps in the environment. Not all were found.

Bu the time I went out the next day to gather them back up ( leave no trace ethic) the bugs had munched many of them quite a bit.

Carrerra - since I have volunteered to be Peep Central 2006 - as I receive boxes from those very generous donors, I will send on to those in need.

I hope customs doesn't have an issue with peeps. For scientific reagents, we always mark, "Scientific Reagents, of no commercial value." For this, perhaps we should write, "PEEPS. Of minimal commercial value especially at 90% off, but of incalculable equine emotional and nutritional value."

Dressage Geek...I'm pretty sure, as long as you label them properly and leave them in their original packaging unopened with the factory seal and such they'll be OK....google customs regs for australia...

Peeps on sale for $.10 at Walgreen's, will be picking up a couple to try with our horses. Maybe then I can bribe her to let me pick up her back feet.

Is it wrong to hope Vivian buys ten cases of Peeps and her horse hates them and Wallgreen's won't take them back so she is then forced to send them to Dressage Geek, who then shares them with Luka?

So after reading this thread I decided to raid my daughters' peep stash to see if the 4 legged kiddos liked peeps. It took a little persuading, but I got 2 of the 3 horses to eat a bright pink peep. 5 of the goats ate a piece also. I think I may have created a peeps loving monster with Kenny He always has eaten strange things....

I should note that last night I saw Luka's Grandpa on AIM and I asked him "Hi Dad, you know, you can check Wallgreens for Peeps too...."

Instead of the usual "Hi Dad, how's it going"

The things I do for that damn racehorse (and he hasn't even touched hoof to track yet!)

Hey Geek, you should do some sort of scientific study on the effects of various Peep colors and species on the speed of racehorses (do they run faster if they know a Peep is wating in the winners circle? do they run faster if they recieve a Peep pre-race? What about a blanket of Peeps in the Breeders Cup Peep Classic? Or how about the Peeple Crown Classic series? Will we one day see a jock drive away in his or her new Peep shaped automobile?)

ET spelling (jeez...the closer I get to finals the worse spelling gets. Thank God for scantrons. Now how do you spell A again?)

OOOO MY SALIVARY GLANDS JUST BLEW OUT

                                WINNERS CIRCLE PIE

1 1/2 cups graham crackers, crushed

                                2 tablespoons granulated sugar

                                6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

2 full packages of Peeps, 30 Peeps total (your choice of color), plus additional for garnish

                                1/3 cup hot milk

1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream

                                1/4 teaspoon brandy

2 ounces semisweet chocolate, cut into small chunks and chilled in freezer (or two toffee bars chopped into bite-size pieces)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pulse graham crackers in a food processor until fine.

Mix butter, sugar and crushed graham crackers in a bowl. Press mixture evenly into the sides and bottom of a 9-inch pie plate.

Bake crust for 7 minutes until golden. Allow to cool to room temperature. (Crust can be made a day or two in advance and kept fresh in the refrigerator.)

Using a double boiler, stir in hot milk and Peeps until fully melted and uniform in color. Allow to cool to room temperature, 7-10 minutes. Do not allow mixture to stiffen.

Whip cream to stiff peaks using a hand blender or kitchen mixer. Add brandy during mixing.

Using large rubber spatula, fold whipped cream and chocolate pieces into the Peeps mixture. Make sure all of the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.

Pour into graham cracker pie shell and refrigerate several hours or overnight.

Garnish with green coconut (see below), whole Peeps and/or more chocolate pieces.

I gotta admit, I've been a little confused,
When you say peeps, I assume yer meanin' the food?
'Cus my internet lingo, well it ain't all that great,
And I thought Peeps meant people in abbreviate.

So now that I think we're on the same page,
Yer givin' candy to yer horses, well listen to Doc Sage.
Sometimes they gotta be spoiled, this I do know,
but I ne'er thought I could make 'em like something like a marshmallow.

That sticky stuff, well it ain't for me,
but I was at the Wal-Mart last night and what did I see,
but boxes and boxes of yeller colored peeps,
Well I thought of this here crowd and put some in my Jeep.

They were next to free and I figured why not?
Even an old cowboy like me has a soft spot.
So I gave some to my critters this morning with their hay,
And what do you know they are addicted in the worst way.

All but the mules, they ain't into sugary chickens,
But them horses, I tell ya, like them like the dickens!
I guess it's a good thing that I'm humble and not too proud,
'Cus I'm about to be the laughing stock of the local cowboy crowd.

                                      I'm all for treats...

But I cant help wondering it cant be all that good to give them very often to horses, or even humans for that matter. Mine hated them. And he loves treats. But the most unnatural thing he would eat is a Ginger snap cookie, mostly he likes carrots, Bananas And raisins. Raisins are his all time fave, bananas a close second!

People Please!!! Feeding horses treats that could be construed as "modern" is detrimental to a horse's psyche. Did horses have peeps 1 million years ago? No. They ate grass and possibly pine cones or dirt. This treat giving is much like the detrimental effects of shoeing; a horse must be reminded of their more primitive roots in order to stay in touch with their inner horsey selves. To feed them something that may resemble a DUCK undermines their self-knowledge. Perhaps you should take this into consideration and leave off the pinks in favor of the orange Halloween pumpkins. At least those are really vegetarian. How about First Day of School Apples?! There is no Neon in Nature!! Try brown. Heat it up! Why shouldn't we all enjoy a pile of steaming brown goo?! The stickiness that coats your mouth and stains your fingers.... Who here substitutes sheath scritches for treats? Who here quirks an eyebrow at that?! No one. I think I'll go expel a doggie anal gland for some variety.

Ah, but Ted is highly evolved. Too late for him to run in the Peeps Classic, as suggested by Equinetech.

We went past our one peep ration last night. I finally gave Ted a bridle path. When i first got him, if he even heard a pair of clipper switch on his whole body would shake. Last night, I just stepped on the stool, turned 'em on, and he was very sweet about letting me do the job (he even stopped playing with another horse's grazing muzzle for the duration). SO he truly deserved another peep.
