Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

    -Helmet when you ride
Always. I've fallen enough times for them to be of great use to me . Not to mention one of my last falls included my helmet being smashed, glad it wasn't my head .
    -Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout
No, I don't wear a helmet for this, and I don't know anyone who does. I don't usually have to worry about it with my horse...
-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet
I wouldn't allow others to ride without a helmet to many possible accidents, but if i'm confident with the horse, I don't think I would require them to wear a helmet for handling.
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses
    Sometimes, depends what I'm doing.
    -Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride
Always wear gloves to ride. I used to have a pair of rubber reins, taught me to like gloves really quick .
-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when?
No. I'm not jumping over anything that wouldn't give if I fell on it, If I was doing cross country jumps or something where there is more potential for breaking limbs than just falling in the dirt, I probably would wear a vest.
    -Ride bareback
I would, and have. But my horse is so bony, I haven't yet tried it on him yet. Maybe I'll do that this weekend.
-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine)
Haven't, but depending on the horse, and whether I trusted him and knew he would follow my aids, I probably would If I felt confident with the horse.
-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump
Depends on the horse, my horse now wouldn't mind, but the last one I rode would have pitched a fit.
-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming)
NO!!! EEk!! my toes! I would never do this.
-Lead 2 or more horses at once
Depends on the horses as well, but yes I would do this.
-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck
    Yes, depending on horse.
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock
    Probably not.
    -Ride double
    Yes, depending on the horse.
-Ride double with a small child
Probably not, need a really trusty schoolmaster for that.
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc)
    Yes and have
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear)
    Yeah probably.
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear
    No.
    -Ride along a paved road
I have, but I only ever walk, and try to stay off the pavement as much as I can.
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road
    Not, unless absoluetly neccessary.
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks
Yeah, but not take treats from my mouth. Some tricks are a lot safer than others.

      Wow! Pretty comprehensive!

-Helmet when you ride------Always, every horse, every ride.
-Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout----No, guess I worry more about my feet when I'm handling.-
Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet---No. My students all wear helmets. Even the adults.-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses Always
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride Always
-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when? No, but I don't jump at all. I've thought about wearing one for cross country riding, but haven't done it yet.
Ride bareback Hmmm, I guess no but only because I don't have a suitable horse. I think when my 5 yr old gets a little more mature, I might ride him bareback. With a vest and a helmet.
-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine) No, see above-
Swim with your horse, dive off his rump No see above. I did this a lot when I lived near Lake St. Clair. It was pretty fun and a great way to cool off!
Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming) NO WAY! See above about feet worries.-
Lead 2 or more horses at once Yes, but only ones I feel pretty sure about. And usually only if I know I can safely turn one loose if needed.
-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck Yes, all the time.
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock No
Ride double No I don't think it's fair to the horse or terribly safe.
-Ride double with a small child NO WAY. Much too dangerous!
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc) Yes, some. No standing, but around the world, sliding off the rump (on a horse I know)
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear) No. Besides the normal worry about being hung up, I have a fear of having my foot mutilated. Probably from a lifetime of ponies!
Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear No
-Ride along a paved road No
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road No
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks No, seen too many broken noses, teeth etc from this
-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing:

-Helmet when you ride almost always
-Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout almost never
-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet ride, no, handle, yes
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses sometimes (usually because it's cold)
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride almost always...more for comfort and grip
-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when? yes, on cross country or on a horse I really think is crazy/untrustworthy (only one horse I've actually done this on)
        -Ride bareback on occasion
-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine) halter and lead, on occasion
-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump swim, yes
-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming) have thrown hay or done night check in the summer bare foot...not much more than that, though
-Lead 2 or more horses at once everyday
-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck rarely
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock even more rare
-Ride double nope...no horse in the barn I'd trust
-Ride double with a small child no kids to do that with
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc) on some horses, yes, occasionally
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear) sneakers, yep...I have ridden in clogs ONCE...it sucked
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear sneakers, yes
-Ride along a paved road yes
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road avoid it if possible
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks licky kisses and nuzzles are ok
-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing: I'm a ground manner nazi...I HATE rude horses, so they get their butts kicked if they act poorly or try to bully. I don't hesitate to put a chain over their nose or grab a twitch. I'm little, do this for a living, and can't afford to get hurt....it's one thing if I fall off, but I try to avoid at all costs getting hurt while dealing with them on the ground, which means I am very firm when it comes to following the rules.

          -Helmet when you ride
Most of the time. I only go without on my trusty 16 y/o QH I've had for 12 years.

          -Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout
          No way.

-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet
          Ride, no; handle, yes.

-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses
          Rarely - only when cold.

          -Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride
Rarely - only when cold or competing.

-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when?
          Only when riding XC.

          -Ride bareback
Yes, on a trusty horse (see QH above) with minimal withers.

-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine)
          Yes, on the aforementioned QH.

-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump
No, but only because QH hates water!

-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming)
          Never.

-Lead 2 or more horses at once
          Rarely.

-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck
          Trusty horse only.

-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock
Trusty horse only - even this rarely. It's much more effective just to turn in front of her and she'll follow.

          -Ride double
          No.

-Ride double with a small child
Only did this once, with a 6-year-old and trusty QH.

-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc)
No, except when using as a training tool for young kids on VERY trusty, NOT MOVING schoolies.

-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear)
          Never.

-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear
          Never.

          -Ride along a paved road
          Yes.

-Ride along a busy, high traffic road
Only if there is no alternative; rarely.

-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks
          No.

-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing:
Er... not really. I use general good barn sense, but nothing out of the ordinary. All the less-than-100percent-safe things I said "Yes" to earlier were exclusively with my dear QH; I wouldn't do any of it with any other horse.

-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump

-Helmet when you ride Now? Always
                  -Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout Nope
-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet Not even a question. You wanna ride my horse, then you gotta wear a helmet. But since I don't wear one for grooming or leading, I'm not going to require that.
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses Only put on gloves twice to lead a horse, in my LIFE.
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride Only for shows, I have short thumbs and gloves leave me with about 3/4 in of extra fabric at the end that catches between the reins.
-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when? Only if I go XC
-Ride bareback Only my old girl, wouldn't even consider my other two or another horse, not in good enough shape right now.
-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine) Again, now?? Nope. Did in the past.
-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump LOL, once again, did as a kid.
-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming) Ahhh yes, the things we do as children. Not any more.
-Lead 2 or more horses at once Only two pasture pals. And then, only rarely. But have in the past brought up a gang of lesson schoolies four or five at a time. Would do it again with this gang of schoolies.
-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck No
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock Yup, even my stallion.
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc) I did as a kid, not any more.
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear) Nu uh
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear Depends whose horse they are riding Mine, no.
-Ride along a paved road Not if I can help it
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road Hell no!
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks Not anymore...
-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing: Leading my stallion with his mane gets me the look. Otherwise, nothing else.

                    -Helmet when you ride
Yes but I'll be riding my horse Western in the future so I'm not sure.
                    -Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout
                    Never
-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet
Not sure what you mean by "under your supervision". Friends handle my horses or ride them wearing whatever they choose.
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses
Only when I'm rehabbing a puller
                    -Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride
                    Never
-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when?
                    Nope
                    -Ride bareback
                    Whenever I can!
-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine)
                    Occasionally
-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump
                    No
-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming)
Not barefoot but I do wear sandals at the barn in the summer.
-Lead 2 or more horses at once
                    Tried it once. Never again.
-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck
Only my 31yo and he hardly counts!
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock
                    Never, but occasionally the chin
                    -Ride double
                    No
-Ride double with a small child
                    No
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc)
                    Rarely
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear)
                    No
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear
As above, my friends are free to do whatever they please. They are adults though, never children.
                    -Ride along a paved road
                    Yes, all the time
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road
I have in the past, don't need to now
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks
I will kiss my horses' muzzles but they can't return the favor. Snuffling around with lips closed is OK.
-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing:
Manners while being led is really important to me. No barging forward, over me, into me, etc. Must allow me to choose my path through narrow openings without trying to go through at the same time I do.
Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you? You are at your very best when things are worst.

                      bwahaha

                      -Helmet when you ride
Almost always; I can remember riding sans helmet all of 3 times in my life
                      -Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout
Not anymore; it was required at the barn I grew up at until you became an employee, and now I will wear one when I'm dealing with a horse I'm concerned about
-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet
                      Handle, yes. Ride, no
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses
Always in the winter, only when I'm longing a horse OTHER than my mare the rest of the year or handling a horse I'm concerned about
                      -Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride
                      Winter only
-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when?
                      Never
                      -Ride bareback
Occassionally; my TB's aren't exactly comfortable seats!
-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine)
Once in a while with my mare or a very trustworthy horse
-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump
Never got the chance, but I'm sure I would
-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming)
                      Never
-Lead 2 or more horses at once
All the time; generally two at a time
-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck
Not if I can avoid it, but I have
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock
                      Nope
                      -Ride double
                      Nope
-Ride double with a small child
                      Never
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc)
Only sitting "sidesaddle" or with my knees up over the front of the flaps to relieve hip pain. Then I fell off doing that. Whoops!
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear)
                      Never
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear
                      Never
                      -Ride along a paved road
                      sometimes
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road
                      Only VERY rarely
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks
I think my horses would look at me like I'm crazy, so no! I do make my mare stand still to BE kissed, which she hates
-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing:
NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER wrap a lead rope or longe line (or anything attached to a horse) around my hands, or let anyone I'm working with do so, under any circumstances-I know a woman who lost all 4 fingers on her right hand doing that. Never ride with the stirrup bars closed; having the leathers slide off the saddle saved my life once, quite literally. I DO ride and jump alone quite often, and have trail ridden alone (always have a cell phone strapped to me just in case).
Also, I'm a stickler for ground manners-I HISS at my mare when she misbehaves and she gets her little rear backed up when she does something bad on the ground-now she backs herself up when I hiss, which people think is hilarious.
With one mare I had this summer, I routinely cooled her out by taking the bridle off and just leaving the reins around her neck. I never did it when others were in the arena, but still, not the safest thing!

Answer these as you see fit, but please no novels, keep it brief if possible:

-Helmet when you ride- always, well that would be a lie, i hop on Indy sometimes after he's been turned out and walk him around the arena
-Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout- never, unless i am turning out a horse I have just ridden, and the helmet stays on because I'm too lazy to take it off
-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet not if they're a junior
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses most of the time
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride always
-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when? never
-Ride bareback yes for both horses, though Gomez tends to not like it...if it has been raining, i've been known to hop on INdy with a bridle on and walk him around that way instead of handwalking
-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine)- yes for both horses
-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump- never
-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming) never
-Lead 2 or more horses at once yes
-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck Monday when I want to get him away from the other babies
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock never
                          -Ride double once
-Ride double with a small child yes
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc) only while vaulting
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear) once or twice
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear- only if they are going no faster than a trot
-Ride along a paved road yes
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road sort of...construction trucks are always around the canyon, so when on a trail ride, usually 5-6 will pass
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks Viper knows how to bow
-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing: no crazies

-Ride double with a small child I haven't with my son, but all my cousins learned to ride by hanging on to my back belt loop as I hacked my horse around.
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc) All of the above
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear) No
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear No
-Ride along a paved road Yes
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road No
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks Yes. I taught my hunter to drink out of a straw.
-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing: I NEVER wear my rings in the barn. My mom had 2 dislocated fingers from her wedding ring getting caught in a cotton leadrope. She still has problems 15 year later. I won't make that mistake.

                                    -Helmet when you ride
ALWAYS!!!! VERY IMPORTANT (just moved to a barn where no one wears one... its very strange to me)

                                    -Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout
                                    NO...

-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet
EVERYONE MUST WEAR A HELMET WHEN RIDING MY HORSE. HANDLING MY HORSE WITHOUT ONE IS NO BIG DEAL TO ME THOUGH

-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses
                                    Sometimes

                                    -Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride
Rarely... I dont like gloves that much. Except when its very very cold.

-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when?
                                    During XC

                                    -Ride bareback
                                    Yes

-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine)
                                    Halter and 2 lead ropes.

-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump
When I was younger I did.

-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming)
No way! I've been stepped on one to many times!

-Lead 2 or more horses at once
                                    2 is my limit

-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck
I'll lead one w/ just a lead rope

-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock
Eh, depends on the horse, I guess

                                    -Ride double
Not recently, but I used to ride double and jump when I was a kid.

-Ride double with a small child
Depends on the mount, but sure, if the horse I was on was OK with it

-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc)
Not on my current horse, but on one that doesnt mind, I will

-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear)
                                    VERY rarely.

-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear
                                    Yes

                                    -Ride along a paved road
                                    Yes

-Ride along a busy, high traffic road
                                    No

-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks
Yes, My horse learned how to Nod when asked if he was hungry

-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing:
Not off the top of my head.

Helmet when you ride: Yep- sadly, it's required at my barn. I used to only when we jumped, but now barn and husband require it.
-Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout: uh, no- that's weird. Wait! I lie- my new horse is a Hater and sometimes before putting on his tack I'll throw the hat on to keep him from getting me with his teeth.
-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet: there are no others under my supervision, thankfully. But, other people can do as they wish, in my opinion.
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses: again, weird.
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride: always because I'm a puss about my fingers getting ripped up and I ride greenies.
-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when? Uh, no. I'm a HJ rider, not an eventer.
-Ride bareback: Yep! Not my guy now- he's too tall and too slim for comfort, but I hop on poines all the time.
-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine): Ponies!! No twine, though. Twine as tack is for suckers.
-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump: If I dove off his rump, he would most likely kick me. But I have been known to swim with horses in the past.
-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming): Ick- manure in my toes! Icky!
-Lead 2 or more horses at once: yep, all the time.
-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck: Not in my barn- no one is trained that way, but I've done it in the past.
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock: not outside of the paddock, unless someone got loose and I happen to catch him.
-Ride double: Not since I was a bebe
-Ride double with a small child: I don't like small children. Heh- actually, I just don't hang out with any, but I'd be willing to have my niece up in front of me on a nice old pony for a little walk.
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc): I'm too old and stiff, but I used to when I was young and limber. My trainer taught me how to vault onto a horse as a possible equitation test, but if I did that now I'd probably break something vital.
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear): not since I was a kid and rode in Chuck Taylors. Now I like to think I have more style, but I'm probably wrong.
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear: I don't care about other people's footwear, and I don't have others under my control.
-Ride along a paved road: yep.
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road: not lately.
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks: If I tried that, he'd bite my lips off. As a kid, I taught my first horse how to kneel in the concrete aisle and just about got my ears blasted off by my trainer.
-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing: I try to avoid my horse's teeth, which is simple self-preservation, but we're working on toning down the hate. Riding isn't a very safe occupation, but I do it for the fun and exhilaration of going over fences and playing with large beasties. I can be "American-style" safe (i.e. sealed in sanitized bubble wrap) when I'm old or dead.
You can take a line and say it isn't straight- but that won't change its shape. Jets to Brazil

-Helmet when you ride Yes. I didn't when I was a kid; but since then I have never ridden at a barn that didn't require it.
                                        -Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout Nope
-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet I don't 'supervise' anyone but if i did, I wouldn't allow someone to ride without one.
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses only when it's cold

-Ride bareback Love it, used to do it all the time...but won't be trying it anytime soon on my new OTTB!
-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine) used to, but won't try it with my new guy anytime soon.
-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump Used to do this in the ocean with the Arab I had growing up. It was a blast (and he loved it too.) I would definitely swim with my new guy if I had a chance.
-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming) No way! Maybe this is my pet peeve...can't even imagine this.
-Lead 2 or more horses at once Don't need to, but wouldn't be concerned about it if they were acquainted and got along.
-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck nope, b/c the property isn't entirely fenced in. If it was, I might.
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock No
                                        -Ride double Never
-Ride double with a small child Nope
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc) Used to, haven't in a while.
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot(“unapproved” footwear) Not really.
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear No
-Ride along a paved road Depends on the road and the horse.
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road Highly doubtful. Did it before with my Arab but I always try to avoid it.
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks My OTTB is very good-natured and I don't feed him from my mouth, but I do get nuzzled from him a lot, usually on my cheek. And I love that.
-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing:
A couple things I have done/will do that might horrify people: I love to lay down with my horse in his stall, and I used to jump on my old (arab) in the paddock when he had no halter, lead rope, or anything.
"To understand the soul of a horse is the closest human beings can come to knowing perfection."
