Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet - Under 18 - helmet, over 18- on their own (but I have lots of helmets so no one can use that excuse...out here I constantly get made fun of for wearing my helmet though so people are reluctant to wear them)

-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride - For shows only.

-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck - Occasionally.
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock -HA! I wish.
-Ride double - Only with my best horsey friend (we grew up together riding double, poor horses, but it's been years since we last did!)
-Ride double with a small child - I have done this but don't think I would do it again.
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc) - Not on purpose.
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear) - No.
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear - Only when I was at a child's house giving a lesson and the mom insisted that her daughter be able to ride barefoot and bareback (after lessons)...hey, not MY kid.

-Ride along a busy, high traffic road - No.
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks - No.

        Pick your risk!
There have been a bunch of threads lately on opposite ends of the danger spectrum; either pointing out something that is stupidly dangerous (in the OP’s eyes) or lamenting the over-safety-ing of horse sports. I thought it would be interesting to see what risks people will or won't take in their own horseworld.

Answer these as you see fit, but please no novels, keep it brief if possible:

        -Helmet when you ride Always
-Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout Never have, but would if I had one I didn't trust
-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet Never
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses Rarely (unless cold)
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride Sometimes- usually do to show.
-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when? When required, or for some cross country schooling
-Ride bareback If the horse has a comfortable back
-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine) Yes- if in an overall confined/safe environment.
-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump Never have- but haven't had the opportunity
-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming) Never
-Lead 2 or more horses at once Once in a while
-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck Yes
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock Yes- if in an overall confined/safe environment. I ammore likely to lead by a "hand over the nose" than by the forelock
-Ride double Not in a a long time
-Ride double with a small child Nope
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc)Not in a a long time
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear) No
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear Depends on the situation
-Ride along a paved road Often
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road Rarely
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks Stretching exercises become"trick" from their perspective.
-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing: Probably

-Ride along a paved road Quite often, actually
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road Makes me nervous, but I have done so quite often
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks My horses "kiss", but no treat taking from the mouth

-Helmet when you ride - Only in lessons and because it's required by the barn
-Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout - No
-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet - If they ride my horse they better wear a helmet. I know, I know....do what I say not what I do......if they ride their own horse and if they are adults, it's up to them
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses Only when it's cold

-Lead 2 or more horses at once Yes.

                -Helmet when you ride
Always. I live alone and if I got knocked out, it'd be at least a few hours before anyone came to find me.

                -Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout
                Nope. Don't think it's a significant risk.

-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet
                Ride no, handle yes.

-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses
                Rarely.

                -Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride
Sometimes. When it's cold, or I'm using icky stiff new reins an d don't want ropeburns.

-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when?
Haven't ever yet, but I don't currently jump (hopefully again next year)

                -Ride bareback
                Yup.

-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine)
Last night I was sitting on my horse with just a halter and not even a rope. Yes, she's an angel. (But it was also in nice tall squishy grass. )

-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump
I suppose, although all my horses have hated water.

-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming)
Rarely. I did last night (chased the dog out into the pasture trying to get a dead bird away from the dog, then rode the angelpony back because my feet were cold.

-Lead 2 or more horses at once
Yes, if I need to. Not ideal, though.

-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck
If I have to. It's not ideal, but I've done it.

-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock
                Same

                -Ride double
Nope. I'm too fat, it's not fair to my horse.

-Ride double with a small child
Not at my current weight, but I've done it before and probably will again. Never over a walk though or on anything but a VERY steady horse.

-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc)
No real desire to, but I suppose.

-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear)
I've done it many times, although never in sneakers. (Tevas, birks, barefoot....)

-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear
Not generally. (I have one exception for a friend who is a better rider than I am, but she's only ever done it once, and I wouldnt' say anything about it if she did it again. Her boots were full of fire ants, so we left them in the field and she rode back to the house barefoot.)

                -Ride along a paved road
Only if I can't avoid it.

-Ride along a busy, high traffic road
                Same as above.

-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks
No 'kisses' but my girl gives hugs and does know how to touch a target with her nose (because I was bored with the clicker and it's easy and useful.)

                  -Helmet when you ride Always!!

-Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout Depends on the horse...

-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet Never - if they are under my *supervision* then they are riding my horse, and I have every right to insist that they wear a helmet no matter how old they are. No one is FORCING them to get on in the first place - they can choose not to if they are THAT helmet-phobic.

-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses Depends on the horse and what I am doing - lunging and ground driving, almost always (unless I forget ), most other stuff I don't unless at a show in-hand (or horsey is nutty).

-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride Usually. But I'm not a fanatic about it - the worst I'm going to get (that gloves might prevent ) is a blister or friction burn.

-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when? Yes, competing and schooling (almost always...) X-country. Also riding young, green, or otherwise unpredictable horses or in other situations where a fall is likely to happen or is likely to be baaaaad if it DOES happen. Occasionally in places where I know the kids are made to and it's not that hard for me to wear mine to set a good example.

-Ride bareback Absolutely. Best way to teach you to balance on a horse (though currently my TB has back problems that are not helped by my un-padded butt, so I haven't in a year or so )

-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine) Not infrequently...I've galloped my OTTB in a halter and leadrope...you mean that's a bad thing??

-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump Not yet...but I want to. The swimming part, that is. The diving part sounds a bit - but maybe that's the lifeguard in me...

-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming) No thanks, I like my feet the way they are.

-Lead 2 or more horses at once Two-frequently. More - on occasion, but not often.

-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck If the horse knows how to lead, they shouldn't NEED the halter...and my horses know how to lead.

-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock See above... I used to do showmanship with no halter/bridle. Haven't done it in awhile (other priorities ), so horsey would doubtless need a refresher, but it's quite possible.

-Ride double Occasionally, but it's uncomfortable except on a draftie-type!

-Ride double with a small child With a very small child to give a pony ride, with someone else also leading the horse.

-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc) I took a vaulting clinic once. When I tried the tricks on my OTTB, he was Not Amused (though quite tolerant)...

-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear) Yes, sneakers on occasion...don't like the idea of footwear that can fall off though - could be quite distracting! 99% of the time I ride in footwear designed for the purpose (riding, that is), though.

-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear Depends on the person, horse, and situation - basically, if I would, they can.

-Ride along a paved road Frequently

-Ride along a busy, high traffic road Occasionally (on a horse who is OK with traffic, of course!)

-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks That sounds unwise...

-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing: My OTTB is a saint and I do many things with him that might make people go . My Arab has not reached sainthood yet (but she's young!), so I'm more careful. My biggest safety thing that is (apparently) fairly unique is that I won't ride a horse without some control over it's head (at least a lead rope). I see people, especially on young horses, just being led around with only the leader having any control and that makes ME go ! If horsey gets away from leader, I want to have SOMETHING to TRY to steer, stop, and control bucking with.

Also, ALL the safety stuff (mentioned above and other stuff) applies equally to me and to anyone else riding or handling my horses. Try explaining to a judge (or bereft parent or spouse) that while X safety precaution was good enough for ME, I didn't really care about That Other Person... (Since I don't give lessons or coach or anything, the only people I supervise are riding *my* horses!)

-Helmet when you ride - Almost always ~ I am very guilty of not putting one on when I am catching horses in the field and ride bareback back up to the barn.-Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout - Almost never (Will do if I suspect the horse will be a 'problem child')
-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet - Ride - not unless they are adults, then they get a choice (and that usually ends up only happening with men), handle - yes
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses - rarely, depends on how cold I am, will wear them to lunge a horse.
-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride - most of the time
-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when? - no, have thought about investing in one for myself though...
-Ride bareback - all the time, (too lazy to walk back to the barn from the back of our 65 acre pasture), like I told my vet there are only 3 horses out of 12 in the pasture there are only 3 that I won't ride bareback - 1 is a teenaged TWH mare who rarely gets ridden as her owner lives out of state, 1 is a 2 y.o. colt that isn't started under saddle yet, 1 is a QH mare that is just too quick in her turns unless you have glue on your butt.
-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine) - almost every day
-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump - nope
-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming) - nope, and I gripe at students who show up in sandals too that they HAVE to change before getting their horse.
-Lead 2 or more horses at once - yeps, as long as they are compatible.
-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck - yes
-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock - depending on the horse I will
-Ride double - again depends on the horse, but rarely
-Ride double with a small child - yes, child in front.
-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc) - only when bored and only on a few horses.
-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear) - sneakers - yes, barefoot - no
-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear - sneakers - rarely, barefoot - no
-Ride along a paved road - yes, wide sidepath makes it very possible in our area
-Ride along a busy, high traffic road - not if I can help it, drivers are stupid when it comes to horses near the road.
-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks - depends on which horse, and their tendency to bite... so most not.
-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing: I don't let students jump without me there, and I don't let ANYONE handle my stallion other than to feed/hay/water him, and I ONLY let a few people handly my TB gelding WHEN I'm there - if I'm not there NOBODY handles him....for safety reasons...jumping is obvious, the stallion is pretty obvious, the TB though - no matter how CALM he may ACT he does have his "idoit" moments, and when "mom" isn't around he tends to have them more frequently.

                            -Helmet when you ride
Always (well, granted, I have forgotten a couple of times but realized it later and went back)

                            -Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout
Only if I put it on when I get my tack out because my hands are full.

-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet
Never for children, adults, up to them. Handling I don't care about.

-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses
                            Rarely

                            -Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride
                            Sometimes

-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when?
                            Cross-country

                            -Ride bareback
                            Yes

-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine)
                            Halter and lead rope sometimes

-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump
                            Would swim if i could

-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores,
                            riding, grooming)
                            No

-Lead 2 or more horses at once
                            Yes

-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck
                            Yes--but definitely depends on horse

-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock
Done it with my horse, wouldn't with another

                            -Ride double
                            Yes, not much anymore

-Ride double with a small child
Well...when I was a small child I did with other small children.

-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc)
                            Yes

-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear)
                            No

                            Generally no

                            -Ride along a paved road
                            Yes

-Ride along a busy, high traffic road
No, but I would if I needed to

-Teach or allow your horse to ‘kiss’ you/take treats from your mouth/other ground tricks
                            Um, bowing if that counts.

-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing
People already know I'm crazy, they don't ask anymore Seriousl though, I don't really do anything that would compromise safety IMO with me and my horse...a lot of these things I would not do with another horse or a horse I didn't know.

-Helmet when you ride -- only if required by the owner of the property I'm riding on OR if I am riding a green horse (which I hardly ever do)

-Helmet for horse handling/grooming/turnout -- never

-Allow others under your supervision to ride or handle w/out a helmet--only my daughter and 18 year old neice are allowed to ride sans helmet everyone else wears it or stays on the porch

-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to handle horses-- rarely

-Always/sometimes/rarely/never wear gloves to ride-- always in the winter, sometimes the rest of the year, depending on weather

-Wear a safety vest? If yes, when?-- never

                              -Ride bareback-- sometimes

-Ride w/ minimal equipment, (i.e. halter and rope/ just a rope or twine)-- sometimes

-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump-- never have, but I'm sorely tempted

-Go barefoot around your horse/horses (doing chores, riding, grooming)-- lots during the summer

-Lead 2 or more horses at once-- occasionally have

-Lead one or more with just a rope around the neck-- I can lead my horse with just my hand cupped on his chin - but I only do it in the pasture - never outside of a fenced area

-Lead by just grabbing the mane or forelock- my horse will but there again I only do it in the confines of a fence or stall

                              -Ride double-- no

-Ride double with a small child-- never

-Do tricks (standing, sitting backwards etc)-- no, but some of my friends do, my farrier does headstands on his horse and has done them on my horse in the past, but I'm not that brave

-Ride in a saddle w/ stirrups and in sneakers, clogs, barefoot (“unapproved” footwear)-- have before - before I knew better

-Allow others under your supervision to ride in “unapproved” footwear-- no

-Ride along a paved road-- lol yes

-Anything else you insist on for YOUR safety (Horse safety is another big can o’ worms! ) or have had people look at you for doing:--my biggest thing is if we are riding with folks who I see yanking their horses around or just generally roughly treating the horse, I make sure we get away from them. My daughter rides a semi-green 3 year old and I sure don't want him feeding off of the other horse's stress and exploding too.

Some of the questions really depend on the type of riding and the personality of the horse one's riding or handling. I some cases for example I would wear a helmet when handling a horse.
However I have found that most serious injuries come from inherently risky sports such as eventing for example, but also from forcing horses through either physical or mental issues and assuming it is just ornery behavior.

Having horses on a sugar high (grain or alfalfa) can also increase the risk of getting seriously hurt because it makes most horses too flighty and unpredictable.

I feel that any risk reducing options that are available should be applied when working with horses.

-Helmet when you ride - on trails, in new places, to jump; not always when schooling dressage at home on 20 year old dead broke horse.

-Swim with your horse, dive off his rump - Not with this current one. Haven't hand the opportunity. Did with one previous horse - Not the diving - just the swimming. LOL
