Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

One of the boarders at my barn jousts. Yes, jousts! She has the jousting lance in the tack room and said I can borrow it. One of my horses used to do polo and it won't be too long before I at least try to hold the lance when riding. Now, buy the full armor plate required to actually joust? No.

Oh, one more - we were going to try to get together a group lesson in cowboy mounted shooting! Sort of like barrel racing while popping balloons. I even went and took a gun safety course for extra background knowledge. Might not manage to get it organized this year, but that looks like a fun sport!

Try ring jousting -- no armor required -- and it's a big thing on the east coast (MD, VA, PA) and it's the official sport of Maryland:

              1) Western games - barrels, poles.
              2) Cross-country
              3) Maybe WP - as someone else said, those clothes... Clearly my inner tart.

I'm always amazed at how many different horse sports there are.

Many moons ago I did endurance. My ex-harness racer has suffered through trails, drill team, hunter paces, hunter and jumper classes, pleasure/flat classes, dressage, eventing, wahooing around the farm without saddle (and occasionally, bridle), gymkhanas, team sorting/penning, and even a polo lesson with me. He obviously knows how to drive, and I've done it in the past, but I don't own a cart so I haven't driven him yet. The STB I used to show did western pleasure, although he wasn't particularly built for it and I ended up stealing him from his owner (my aunt) and doing dressage with him. If he had lived longer I might have evented him, but I was only just getting into jumping at the time.

I want to try sidesaddle, and even saddle-seat, someday. To ride the working western events on horses truly made for it would be fun, too.

I've schooled 4- and 5-gaited Icelandics for a client, and ridden a few STBs that were very talented at racking, but I would like to sit on a saddleseat horse/saddle just to do it. I know there are introductory sidesaddle clinics in this general area but the timing hasn't worked out for me, yet.

My friend's daughter does vaulting and it looks ridiculously fun but I think I seriously lack the coordination and flexibility to do it.

I would LOVE to get into jousting and that kind of thing. I am a huge nerd.

                      What I've done:

POLO <3 - I've played for 3 years now, its a family affair haha.

Hunter/jumper - Just 3'3 hunters and 3' jumpers, working on getting a few more feet on there I love it, it's my true calling

Combined driving - Mom does it, so usually I'm navigator, we've only done training level but I might navigate for my friend & her intermediate horse this year, probably be scared shitless

Eventing - I've fooled around on cross-country courses and may do a BN event this September! Once had an amazing opportunity to ride an Intermediate horse around a xcountry course, he packed my butt around v. nicely!

                      What I Want to Do:

Reining - Think this looks awesome, would love to take some lessons

Vaulting - Super cool. Def want to try although I don't imagine I'll be very good at it

Well I have tried my hand at a fair number of things over the years.

The list goes like this: ( I did all of this with my Appy gelding Red Rum and am continuing the tradition with my young Appy mare Bailey)

-trail riding, my first and lasting love
                        -camping with horses
                        -fox hunting, what a rush
-side saddle a couple of times
-showed at the local Appy club shows
                        -evented up to Training level
-dressage shows to the equivalent of second level (we had another system when I was doing it)
-show jumping in the local circuit
-hunter over fences (too bad no judge would over look our spots...how times have changed)
-team penning which was a blast for a couple of years and I may do it again
                        -competative trail riding
                        -parades

Things I would still like to try:
                        -reining
-driving my own horses, I have driven others
-maybe try polo, not sure I'm co-ordinated enough though
The greatest gift you can ever give is taking their pain away and making it your own. Wear that pain like a tribute to the love you shared. Laurierace

chukkerchild, there are vaulting clubs in Canada - I can send you a list of them if you like. For those who are here in the US, you can find the official list (there are non-competitive teams as well) here: http://www.americanvaulting.org/findclub/ While getting to the top levels takes a huge amount of athleticism, even the beginners can have a huge amount of fun and do some really cool stuff. Most clubs encourage 40-something and 50-something parents of their team-members to give it a try, and even have theraputic vaulting for people with some fairly serious handicaps! It's just like any other kind of riding - you don't start out as a worldbeater!
Stay me with coffee, comfort me with chocolate, for I am sick of love.

I won't have time today, but will get them for both of you tomorrow. So far, 3 ladies from the UDBB (I think a couple of them also post here) have gotten into vaulting as well, and are also really having fun with it.

Gymkahna events (for fun at fun-day shows)

I've taken a few lessons in jumping, it was fun.

What I would like to do:

                                Cutting

I've done a ton of different disciplines. Where to start.
Hunters and pony hunters rated for awhile until I got sick of politics
                                  foxhunted for 3 years
                                  Dressage through 2nd level
                                  Evented through training
Western pleasure- college team captin! -What a boring sport
Reining- more my speed- I have to say more english people should at least go and take one lesson of this, its a thrill to see how perfectly some of the horses are trained.
                                  Jumpers level 3
                                  Endurance
Gaited horses- showed a Tennessee Walker Stallion so people could see how calm he was
parades and polo- never enjoyed either.

One thing I would like to try is--
                                  Sidesaddle.

                                    Go ahead and try sidesaddle.
It is fun and a secure seat. Although you do need to make sure you get a sidesaddle that fits you and your horse. Most of the El Cheapos fit neither.
The fact that sidesaddle can be used in Hunt seat, Saddle seat and Western makes it even more fun.
Out here in California we even have a sidesaddle rider who was cutting in her Western.
One young lady even did barrel racing.

                                    Dressage through 2nd level
                                    Evented through training
Western pleasure- college team captin! -What a boring sport
Reining- more my speed- I have to say more english people should at least go and take one lesson of this, its a thrill to see how perfectly some of the horses are trained.
                                    Jumpers level 3
                                    Endurance
Gaited horses- showed a Tennessee Walker Stallion so people could see how calm he was
parades and polo- never enjoyed either.

One thing I would like to try is--
                                    Sidesaddle.

Started western, switched to hunt seat, did some dressage...lately I've had the overpowering urge to try saddle seat/gaited.....I have no idea why!

I've probably missed something there...but yeah, most sports involving horses interest me.

I haven't done much Dressage, but I would LOVE lessons with a great dressage trainer and get my butt kicked!

Also would like to pick up reining/working cow horse and cutting again...did some in college. Pretty fun!

My first love is jumping - jumpers or hunters (depends on my mood )
Let us eat, drink, and be merry. For tomorrow we die.
