Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    Hi,

    I would like to lose a lot of weight before the winter. I weigh about 16-17 stone now, and can't seem to shift it. I have a job that means I'm stuck in one place for a long time each day, and I eat too much chocolate. I have cut down on the chocolate (1-2 small bars per week, as a treat) and am doing 20-30 mins on an exercise bike per day. I'm slowly upping that time too.

    Is there anything else I should be doing? I'm hoping to start riding again in the winter, but I can't at the moment. I don't have my own horse, and I can't afford to loan one, so I can't even do 'stable duties' to increse my exercise.

    I feel fat (I am, I know) and it's knocking my confidence a lot. I think it went up so high because of my BC, which I've stopped having now. (It was the injection)

    I know that I'm not fit enough to ride, and I miss it so much.

    a) instead of chocolate bars, try Hershey Kisses and freeze them, eat 1-2 at a time.
    b) Stairs at work? ALWAYS take them (I work on floor 6 of 26...plus park on the highest flight of our 10floor garage and walk those as well)
    c) Park far away from the door to any building. Walk briskly.

    No, none of these is going to help you drop massive amounts of weight, and they are are awful inconvenient sometimes.

    However, par for the course, talk to your doctor about any exercise program because its SO much easier to hurt yourself when you have "bad" weight working against you.

      I'm going to guess you had the BC injection Depo Provera? (do they use that where you are?)
      I went on that years ago...in the first 3 months I gained 60+ lbs. Apparently when I hollered at my doctor for that he said, "Well I told you weight gain could be a side affect. Who knew they meant this much?" Gee thanks doc.

      If you went on the same BC or a similar one with the same side affect then it will take a short while after being off of it for the side affect to stop working. In my case it shut off my metabolism. This was years ago and my normally fast metabolism never came back so it was a major fight to get that weight off and it's remained harder than usual to keep it off.

      My body no longer metabolizes certain things well at all...I call those the Evil White Foods. If I eat those foods, it turns directly into fat and is stored around parts where I really don't want it.
      The foods that turn into fat:
      White sugar
      White/refined flour
      White potatoes
      White rice
      Under the flour includes breads and pasta.

      All those are no-no's for losing weight. You can eat pasta or bread but check the ingredients and make sure they say Whole Grain or Whole Wheat flour. If it says Refined Wheat flour, it's not good. Swap white rice for brown rice. Swap white potatoes for yams or sweet potatoes. No white or refined sugar, use raw sugar. (this also cuts out candies and baked items)

      If you stick to this 100%, you will drop weight. And pretty fast too. Once you haven't eaten it at all for a week your body not only stopped storing it, it starts burning off what you already have stored. I stuck to that and lost all those lbs in 3 months.

        There's a book called "What to Eat" and it's an aisle by aisle guide to the grocery store and the foods on the shelf. It's absolutely fascinating and a great guide to eating a healthy diet, because you can't just starve yourself. (I'm prepping for the time my metabolism drops off the cliff and my hamburger and pizza cravings will have to be seriously curbed... )

        Another thing to add to Pirateer's suggestion is during the day, get up and take a brisk walk around your office, or do 2 minutes of jumping jacks, etc. No, it's not going to burn the calories and lbs right off, but it could bounce your energy level up and give your heart rate a quick "wake up" spike. Our radio station in town had a "2x10 a day" challenge, where people with desk/office jobs got up 10 times a day for 2 minutes and did something active. apparently people really liked breaking up the monotony of the work day like this.

        Good luck, I really hope you're successful (especially with the giving up chocolate thing... you have a stronger will than I do!!)

          Yep. That sounds exactly like me. I wasn't skinny before the BC, but I've put on so much weight in the six months I was on it.

          Thanks! I don't eat a lot of bread products, but my husband loves potatoes and we eat them a few times a week. I've never tried sweet potatoes or yams, but I'll give them a whirl! Sounds like a fairly simple change too.

              Another set of books are the "Eat This Not That" books- great for restaurants and they have a new Supermarket edition, as well as a Kids one (yepp, thats the one I use).

                Here is a book based on the last 30+ years of scientific research into nutrition, not on all those food fads that have happened during those years, fueled by the media:

                "Good Calories - Bad Calories", Fats, carbs and the controversial science of diet and health, by Gary Taubes

                There you may learn why we have really been gaining weight and what is shown to help control it, as some medically run programs do.

                Gaining considerable weight will alter your balance and you have to relearn motor control for that.

                If you had the time, how about working in a stable cleaning stalls part time, if that has helped you before with weight control, even if you don't have a horse yourself?

                  Try looking at nutrition as a "new and exciting hobby" instead of a downer to get your passion and excitment going for the (long ) journey ahead.

                    One little weight loss trick that really helps is to get a writing tablet and put down every day what you eat, every little thing, with a column for time you eat it, calories, protein, fat, fiber, carbohydrates, a page for every day, where you add all the columns and every week look at the seven days of totals.

                    You will be surprised where you could cut back, some food that you don't really like that much, but it is high in, say, carbohydrates and that you may maybe need to add a little more protein to your meals.
                    Without adequate protein, you are not building muscle and muscle is what helps fuel your metabolism, so you burn more of what you eat.

                    Try a food diary, or if you don't know how, go ask a nutritionist about how to go about it.
                    If you google any one food, you can find in a minute what all is in it, for a given portion.
                    To keep a food diary is easy to do and very enlightening, especially for those that are too heavy and can't figure why.

                      sounds like you're on the right track! Don't forget to add weight bearing exercises in there, building muscle will be more beneficial in the long run as it requires more energy. Just pick up a couple hand weights and do some lunges, squats, and curls while watching TV. You won't even notice you're working out!

                        With regards to nutrition, do a web search for a nutrition guide called "Michi's Ladder." It's fantastic, and I've laminated mine and take it to the grocery when I go. If you try to eat mainly off Tier I and Tier II, your diet should be solid.

                        Also, you need to move more. Try to get up and move at work, but once you get home, you need to seriously think about exercise...at least 30 minutes 4 times per week. Don't think that strolling with the dog will be enough, you need to get your heart rate up and break a sweat if you truly want to make some serious changes.

                        I'm about halfway through a program called P90X. It's TOUGH, but man oh man does it work! Do a youtube search for it...it's intense, but can be done in the privacy of your own home. If you follow the guidelines for it, you WILL see results.

                            Ditto on adding weights. Doing strength exercises is also important when trying to lose weight! And as someone else suggested it's very easy to do while watching tv
