Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Everyone shut the Hell up and quit bitching. Just stop it. I am not going to sit and witness this.

Just stop posting for a few hours and think about what all of this is stemming from. Very personal opinions you have about a very specific issue.

Whether your support that or not, please remember that what has been done has been done and anything you say about it now is just counter-productive and is only going to dig you deeper.

Please, I beg all of you, stop this bickering and nonsense and just let it go.

I hope nobody is permanently banned over this stuff.

While I do think that the application of the wicked sense of humor was in the wrong place at the wrong time, I would miss that wicked sense of humor.

I do wish that more people would do as I try to do when angry....type up a post, then don't post it. Almost as gratifying as posting the troublemaking thoughts.

I've even gone back and deleted posts from contentious threads because I decided I didn't want to be associated with the nastiness. (Remember that "Having Kids" thread that should have been titled "Hating Kids"?).

I like the boards, like the community, like meeting all the new friends in person, but this whole "time and place for everything" that the moderators are attempting to do, is a topic I routinely work on with my son...who happens to have a wicked sense of humor (wonder where he got that one???) and occassionally gets in trouble for it. I'm seriously hoping that he'll learn that stuff.

I can be VERY catty, but I try to reserve that for a few select people who understand and appreciate the humor/venting and would never take it seriously or be hurt by it and more importantly hopefully won't ever use that venting to hurt the person being vented about.

For the sake of full disclosure... my email to Colin, and other BBers whose names have been removed because they're not nearly in her league:

        <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>
Let me make one thing clear... if you don't like
something on the BB, you have two options. One, bring
your concerns up to the moderators and try to bring
        about change. Two, leave.

Griping like spoiled children on the BB because you're
not getting YOUR way is not one of the options.

NOT ONE PERSON emailed me asking the baby Aiden
threads to be curtailed. Not one. Certainly not any of
you. Someone posted about it (in a nice way) a few
weeks ago, after which I asked people to confine their
comments to a few threads. I have no problem in doing
that, and totally agree that the threads should be
minimized. At this time, there are three threads on
the first page of Off Course. Three out of 50. Surely
you all are capable of skipping three threads that
CLEARLY say what they're about in the title.

If you had a concern, you could have emailed me, or
you could have started a constructive discussion
(although I'm not sure those words are in Betsy's
vocabulary) on the BB, and there would have been no
problem with that at all. Instead, you chose to be
snotty about it... so don't complain that you're not
being treated fairly, or that you're not being allowed
to voice your opinion. The delivery, not the opinion
        itself, is the problem here.

I have been MORE than accomadating of all of your
antics over the years. Betsy, I had to convince the
other moderators to allow you back on the BB at all...
no one else wanted to give you a second chance. [Name deleted],
I have deleted your multiple alters on multiple
occasions -- after you promised me you would have no
more than one -- and done nothing more than provide a
cheerful scolding. And you're still allowed to
participate on the BB, even after violating the
        "edict" on multiple occasions.

I'm sick of it. I'm sick of having to treat grown
adults like kindergarteners. You either can live with
things the way they are, or you can't. If you can't,
        you leave.

I don't know any of you very well, but never had any
strong opinion about you either way until now. I
cannot even begin to politely express how totally
repugnant I think your behavior is.

If you want to stay on the BB and participate in a
constructive way, you are totally welcome to do so. If
you want to leave, you are totally welcome to do so.
But to be honest, I don't think I care to ever "speak"
directly to any of you ever again. Kindly do me a
favor and "lose" my email address...

And I stand completely behind it.

Because you don't agree with how or what she posts? I don't always agree but she says how she feels. And perhaps how the other "vast majority" of the board feels.

People were pretty afraid to speak their mind after watching Hobson get roasted for having the audasity to point out that it was inappropriate for Baby Aiden to have his picture posted without a helmet on. I think Colin just got the ball rolling. Sorry you disagree.

I'd like to think I feel free to speak my mind. I've disagreed. But....

There is just such a thing as TACT and diplomacy. Some of those comments (liver sizes, BARF etc.) were completely unnecessary and did NOTHING more to further the posters point than to create animosity. A really, really lousy way to effect any sort of change is to alienate the people you are trying to sway.

Who the heck is Jair anyway!? ha ha ha, that is too funny. After all is said and done, I hope that everyone will realize how deeply the Hawks' feelings were hurt by these threads and, to that end, that is what really bothers me the most. I always hear how 'horse people' are crazy, a strange bunch, etc. and now to whoever reads these threads, their point is proven correct!

While I admit I didn't see any of the posts by Jair and others who apparently flamed out, I did see the one by Miniwelsh and did not see anything wrong with it. I believe she stated her opinions very clearly and was not in the least bit offensive. If anyone took it that way, it was the subject matter they disagreed with and NOT the format of her reply.

Instead of all getting along (which would be as boring as dry, white toast), why can't we just disagree sometimes and get a little hot under the collar, but then get past it and get on with our lives when the discussion has reached an end? What is so wrong with that?

Where are the Rhodey updates fer cryin' out loud!? I myself have an exquisite OTTB and I find your threads on the subject most helpful as sometimes we have the same issues! Given all the OT threads that populate this BB, our (respective and collective) participation in threads that diverge and careen into something which bears little resemblance to its original content and intent, (Beaver Drilling, for example, comes to mind), why ever would someone make it their personal mission to, effectively, vent their vehement, offended spleen on a fundraiser designed to save and help the life of a baby? Because the thread isn't horse-related? Please.

It's odd that the very people who delight in derailing strictly horse-related threads are the very same who are now opposed to the collective concern for a baby; especially when the 'solution' to the problem is a really simple one. Don't read it. Skip it. Post something to satisfy your need to discuss strictly horse related issues and concerns.

I suspect there's an underlying issue at the root of this - because, whatever, the assertion, I don't believe it's concern that the Aiden threads are somehow not related to horses. Perhaps it's discontent that the BB no longer revolves around a certain clique, perhaps it's a response to the paradigm shift that's taken place on the BB over the course of the last year, or maybe it's the recognition that the BB no longer serves as one's own personal playground.

Frankly, I don't care about what motivates those of you who've assumed such a vehement stance on this issue. I do care, though, that the vast majority of the people on this BB have proven themselves to be utterly, gracefully, awesomely generous and compassionate.

I'm the first to admit that I'll swoop in for a bite as soon as the rest of you knock someone down....

However - I don't think anyone has the right as posters on this board to ATTACK someone or something in a truly demeaning way. I try to poke fun of the 'fanged ones' (you know who you are), but, wow, Colin's statements lately have been out of line entirely.

I do think there has been a general air of 'meanness' circulating around the board lately. We've all commented on it. Let's do something about it and make this place fun and interesting, not scary and sad. Ignore the meanies! Ignore the meanies! If we don't feed the trolls....they won't come back.

(oh - and kudos to Robby and Goodyfourshoes - I liked how you stated yourselves)
