Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • I wanted to chime in here and say that I and Mr. Justbay attended the auction yesterday and came home with 2!!! We bought a 2 yo solid bay gelding who reminded us very much of a nice horse we used to own. He is in great need of mega groceries, but is very very sweet, has a beautiful kind eye and happens to be an incredible mover! So we are very excited.

There were a few mares we were interested in, but were outbid on. There was one that we liked towards the end that no saled, so we did seek out the Jennings and were able to purchase her after the auction. She is adorable. 8 yo Liver chesnut, with 4 short white socks and a blaze. (Not Bay!!!) She is a cribber and we were told she would rather crib than eat, but with her nice tight miracle collar on now, she is eating just fine! Right now she looks pretty emaciated, but I think she is going to turn out to be a very pretty mare! Either way, she has a good hime.

I am glad we were able to go and help out this situation. We were there late, as my husband was helping out the poor lady who was kicked. I think she broke her wrist but was otherwise okay. If anyone knonws, please let me know so I can tell him as he was concerned.

I understand the older geldings went to good homes, as I checked with the people who worked there to make sure they had homes.

Plus, it was nice to meet Amy86 who was there!!

    • I echo the sentiments of some of the earlier posters. I know NOTHING about racing pedigrees, but it didn't seem as though most of the horses would be of interest to someone in that industry. I did see several youngsters that I wouldn't have minded (although, I wasn't there to buy).

SO nice to hear that EVERY single one ended up with a home!

Justbay got a cutie! Very dark bay with a sweet, sweet face. I know he'll clean up beautifully! Great meeting you Justbay. God bless you for taking home one the mares that wasn't able to find a home, otherwise! She, too, made a point of going into the office, getting a list of the "no bidders" and seeking out one to take home! COTHer's rock!

Linkage was quite the regal gentleman! He walked in ring like he owned the place. What a guy! Although he's definitely looking older, he's so well put together. And I couldn't get over how well behaved he was. What a great buy!

I was surprised, and pleased with how much some of the youngsters went for. There were a few bargains to be had but all in all, for what was there, I think they did pretty well.

And sallylou, have fun with Run Son, she is such a cutie and she seemed to be put together nicely, what a great buy!

          Thank you everyone.

I rode the old guy today. He's very sweet and well mannered and was quite the trooper. Walked right into the washstalls & up to the ring, but he was so scared & literally shaking. Pic & I lounged him before I got on. I only walked & trotted, he began to settle fairly nicely toward the end of our ride. Poor old guy is a little ribby and needs his teeth done very badly. He's got a good home!

                • After we groomed them well and pulled manes, we put them on the longe line which they obviously had been taught, they were great. I then rode Tadore, she was wonderful, a nice mover with a huge overstep, she trotted the trot polls very well and was completly unconcerned and not spooky at all, she is very cuddly and loves attemtion, she stands quiet in the cross ties and all...we are VERY impressed. Bella was lunged and led around alot, bitted in her stall, groomed a lot by her new owner ( a 13yr old girl, very very good rider though!). Her show name is Che Bella (how beautiful). We will take some pics!

                  • You all are wonderful people. I have been in Arkansas for the past few days, and was very disappointed I could not make this sale. I was planning on taking home one of the older horses that did not get bid on, as a companion for Phyllis.

I am so happy all these horses got homes. I was really worried about the colt and a couple of the older mares and geldings.

SallyLou it sounds like you got a lovely one! And best of luck to Picturesque and Linkage!

After all the sad news of late, it is nice to see this worked out well.

                        • Just some head shots for now. The body shots look a little rough. Maybe a "before" and "after" picture in a few months.

The vet came out today to get them all of their shots, etc. as the Vet practice had no recent records on them. They were perfectly behaved. The only scary thing is the 8 yo mare has worn down her 2 front teeth so badly they are nubs. So, she will remain in her miracle collar forever after!! And hopefully keep eating well.

Here is the 2 yo checking out Rocky! (I took that just for you Hattie!)

Anyone else with some pictures?? I would love to see them.

                              • As I have said on another thread this is a huge problem.

I am looking into what I can do down here in Florida.

I have a feeling many of Florida's unwanted end up farther north on their way to the killers.

I can only help them one at a time.

I have some ideas in the pipeline and will post elsewhere when the arrangements are more solid.

                                        • We're lucky in a lot of ways, MargaretF...doing adoptions lets you screen the potential homes before hand -- I think that makes it a lot easier to find 'life' homes for the horses. That, and the fact that all NYHR horses can always come back to the rescue for any reason. You can tell a lot about a horse person just by meeting them. And the reality is that most people don't want or need a fancy show horse -- they just want a fun horse they can love and bond with. Sometimes that fun includes showing and other things, which we understand because we all do it too! But the general philosophy at the Rescue is to match horses and homes --it's for the best for both the horses who have already given a lot to people, and for the people who get a lot of their relationships with the horses. I know I'd walk through fire for my horses and it's thrilling to get e-mails and letters from adopters who feel the same way about their special horses. So far, it's been quite successful.

I don't have my copy of the news letter handy -- was Mystery Force in that one? He was my "official" saved horse earlier this year.

We considered going down to the Rixeyville auction but at the time, we'd already planned to spend the money we had at New Holland that week. So, if we went to Rixeyville, there'd be no money left for New Holland. After watching the response here and weighing the logistics of the trip, NYHR decided to go to New Holland. I was THRILLED to learn that people stepped up and made it so NYHR wasn't even necessary at Rixeyville, and the 3 that came home from New Holland this week are safe as a result. So, to all those who helped rescue the horses at Rixeyville, you all also made it possible for NYHR to save even more horses at New Holland.
