Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • what a bitter dissappointment. If that Editor approves the story, that might be an opportunity to shame insurance companies into at least reviewing their policy of only screening sequentially. Have you considered talking to your legislative reps, both on a state and national level? I know that all you wish for is to be a mom to a healthy baby boy. What more could you ask for in life! Only reason I ask goes back to your sentiment about what good things had been created as a result of this terrible disease...

      • Seeing those darling pictures of Aiden has made this cold, dark, sleety morning into one filled with the warm sunshine of his smile.

I just wish that I could take the whole Hawk Family into my arms a give them a big hug! Heck, I'd like to "group-hug" everyone in thanks for all that they've done to boost my faith in the abounding goodness that still prevails in the world!

That goodness is revealed with every "hit" to the Jingle Counter, every effort put in motion and with each offered prayer.

Perhaps Aiden's story will be a catalyst to much needed reform within the health insurance industry.
Coverage for testing aimed at optimum and timely treatment/testing options should never be meted out in agonizing inches. It should never be bogged down in "committee" the while time is of the essence.

Maybe in the future, situations like this will be put on the fast track with the "Aiden" clause: if it is deemed medically prudent to optimize the donor pool, multiple donor testing should receive automatic pre-approval with the earliest diagnosis of the need for a donor.

To all the Hawk family--may all of the love and heartfelt prayers coming your way bring your a bit of extra of strength and comfort until all of this is behind you. That happy day will coming soon--and when it does, our collective sigh of relief will be heard all through COTH-Land and around the world!

The only thing that could be cuter will be to see pictures of him and Ti Amo together -- our two "COTH BB babies"! -- but we'll get those eventually. Good things come to those who wait, after all.

As for the insurance company, I'll hold my tongue -- -- and focus on the positive the way Lisa is so remarkable at doing.

            Happy Thankgiving Hawk Family!

Well, I spoke to Jill today.(our coordinator) It seems like everything is moving full speed ahead. I dso get frusterated at the system, but honestly the REAL problem is th lack of organ donors. So slowly we will tackel that issue, one organ donor card at a time.

SO for the good news. Jennifer's testing got bumped up a few days! We wil be going to ATlanta a week form today! SO I am happy for that. I love Jennifer, and I know that no matter what comes of it, she would do anything for my son. I get emotional speaking of it. SO I will stop.

Off to get his vaccines today! It stinks to see him cry, but I know every vaccine is a boost for that immune system so another little battle won today!! XOXOXOX

And about those "organ donors one at a time"...I think you'll see that working, too. Like LordHelpus, I'm not sure who would want the organs that I still have (I've parted with a couple along the way ) but I'm signing up, too!

                  • Great Christmas pictures Lisa!

I'm so glad to hear Jennifer's testing has been moved up. What a great holiday this will be if Aiden gets his liver! Sorry to hear about the insurance company isssue. I wonder, just how expensive are the blood tests alone? Maybe some of the proceeds from the Stallion auction or the other auction could be used to pay for them. Then at least you could go right to the more expensive testing of the next person if Jennifer is not a match. It just seems like such a ridiculously long time between one person being turned down and the next being tested. It must seem like an eternity to you.

Happy Happy Thanksgiving. Max has just discovered that sweet potatoes are the best food on earth, so we'll raise a rubber spoon to the Hawk family tomorrow.

Aiden was such a big boy and had such a wonderful holiday! I am so so so happ he was at HOME. No hospital food Thanks giving! After bing in the hospital for so long, all I kept craving was HOME cooked food. And yesterday was the feastI needed! AHHHH I am still stuffed!

Saus: Aiden's favorite thing in the who world is sweet potatoes too!! PLus there are double the calories in Sweet potaoted than most any veggie, so he can get nice and plump on them.

Update: Aiden had his vaccines wednesday, OUCH! and so did I. I got my flu shot. We got his most recent weight and heigth. Aiden has gown a half of an inch! He is currently 26 1/2 inches, and weighs 17 lbs 14 ounces. Although he hasn't gained any in almost 3 months, he is still looking good. Our peditrician said that it is hard to tell what is fluid and liver, and what is his muscle. This time Aiden didn't have a lot of fluid, so the weight was pretty much HIM so we were all very happy.

I feel good about that. Today though I am going riding at My best friend, Jennifer's mom's house. (The same Jennifer that is being tested) I am so excited. She has a bunch of really sweet horses, and we are going to ride like crazy! I will get pics because we are bringing little Aiden with us. (her mom is babysitting)

Have a great day everyone. Now we are on to Christmas, I hope Santa brings us what we have on our list: A Liver!

I printed out one of Aiden's Christmas pictures, and it's now in a little frame on my bedside table to remind me to pray for him every night. And I love waking up in the morning and seeing his smiling face! What a blessing he has been to so many people.

Gail, I think Jenn's mom is bidding on Mr. Fred!

Bailey BFF, I took your advice I smelled the fresh air it was.. wonderful!

I had the best time EVER riding!! I went to Jennifer's house and her mom had already tacked up her big Appendix mare (Cedar) for me. Cedar is so amazing you could fire a pistol off of her and she wouldn't even blink! Jenn, rode their little pleasure show QH mare. (Satin, not Satan, ... the silk like material ) We had a blast! I rode western, but it was so much fun. OUCH! I am so sore already! (me bum be a-hurtin!) We really just walked around. I wasn't into trying to go and prove anything. We went on a 2 hour trail ride. It felt like all the world's problems just faded away. (I have to say honestly I haven't loved life this much. I really feel like I am just a happier person.) Jennifer and I had some wonderful and teary eyed discussions about Aiden and what she is committing to. It was really just what the Dr. ordered. I took an entire roll of film. It is developing as I write this. I will post when I get them back! (pics of Aiden with the horses too!)

This afternoon Joey and I went to the park. We took Rolex and just laid out a blanket and let the sun soak in. It was great! Of course perfect weather here in Florida. I thought of you guys so much today I kept thinking how I wanted to share it with you. I was proud of myself for getting out. I felt really good.

I don't think I really talked about Livers but for 10 minutes today (with Jenn) kind of nice. But of course the horsey bug bit me hard today. All in good time. I know one day I will get my own horse again. Just not for a while. But hey I have good news (for me ) my chaps we much closer to fitting this time! Almost got them to buckle around the tummy! The legs were simple to zipper. Ahhh I am was so relieved, slowly getting the baby weight off. Slowly but surely.

Anyway, I hope everyone is having a great weekend. Aiden is doing so good. It has been a week since we have had any issues. KNOCK ON WOOD! I will post pics soon.
