Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

        • Holy sh**t, Lisa - I swear I thought you were trying to pull another stunt on me - I can't believe Joey is on here now. He had BETTER not break the code and tell my sweet, naiive Matthew how to get on here or I'm doomed.

If so, we'd have to say farewell to our favorite fun threads like "How do I convince my boyfriend that horse money is well invested?", "My boyfriend is taking too long to propose - what do I do?", and other favorites such as "My husband is jelous of my horse!"

(FYI, that was joking, too, Joey - you can't tell him about that, either. )

Welcome to COTH, Joey - now you can't make fun of us and our "little horsie magazine" any more!!!

          • Whoa - re-read that and realized I need to qualify...

Joey called it that WAY before all of this Aiden stuff - before he was a twinkle in Daddy's eye... Joey would refer to COTH in such a loving manner when I would see Lisa after a few months of being away and say something in horsie code, like "By the way, did you see Midevalist's mare on COTH? Check out that bascule!"

Trust, me - I think he has come to recognize the value in such a "horsie" group of people - you guys are awesome!

                • I thought I would break myself in, and do this update. Aiden is still doing good. We just got back from Chick- Fil-A, they are donating 10% of their earnings tonight to Aiden.

I wasn't at the blood draw, but I heard it went well. I spoke to our coordinator and she said they ordered the labs to come back STAT. So we should hear in two or at the most three days. If she gets past the blood tests, Lisa, Aiden and Jennifer will be heading up to Atlanta together as early as this thursday.

When I was dating Lisa, I remember her getting online and going to the "COTH". I thought it was a bunch of people talking about how much they loved horses and that was it. I was so suprised when I learned about the support group and the friendships here. Lisa would call me and say, "DId you now so and so from the COTH is engaged!" I kept think 'what Are you talking about???' Now Lisa will read me the things you say to us, and I just think how great you all have been to us.

Since this is a horse oriented group I thought I would speak a little bit about horses. But I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea. I am not riding a horse! She made me do a 2 hour ride on our honeymoon. That horse wouldn't go, and then he would go really fast. I kept Kicking and he would just stand there. Lisa would laugh at me! But I am a good husband. I can tell how many strides are in between a line of fences. I just guess. I know how to tell what lead a horse is on. I know what a curb chain is now. Lisa had to get it out of her trunk for me. I actually liked going to the last show we went to they had a beer cart. I give Lisa a hard time, but I am glad she rides horses, and I think it has been good for her. I wish I had enough money to buy her old horse back. She misses him. I will buy her a horse one day, when Aiden is better. But she has to buy me a bass boat first.

Thanks for welcoming me. I feel weird but I did go online while at work a few times just to read.

Happy Birthday Aiden. It is days like this when I just wish he was healthy. But every month counts like it is a year. I am so happy he is growing up and doing so well.

Okay, it is weird reading my husband's posts. I feel a little possessive. (hunny these are MY friends haha ) But it is in writing he said he would buy me a horse when he could. (I think he can say that because he knows that is not going to happen for years and years.) But a Bass boat? C'mon Joey....

Anyway, Yes yesterday was a breeze for Jennifer. I was crying like a baby though while she was getting her blood drawn. It is so emotional knowing that she is going through that for Aiden. It is a real sacrafise. She was singing him a song yesterday, the words were " I would give you the world, I would give you my life".. It struck me how much she ment it. As a mother it takes my breath away that others care so much for him.

Joey spoke to our coordinator. They discussed his PELD score (status on the list). She said that she was going to make sure that she had us an answer very soon. Hopefully today I will know what Aiden's status on the list is. It is very obvious to me that all though everyone on our transplant team is very nice, that they have not personally gone through this. I think things would be a lot more efficiant. (excluding Aiden's GI doc. He is amazing, needs no improvement) I don't want to get into exactly what has been happening, but lets just say that things are getting over looked. OKay done venting.

On his 7 month birthday, Aiden is sleeping in. I have had my coffee, and oatmeal, gone online and the little angel is fast asleep. Probably becuase he kept Joey up last night. Sorry Hunny I was tired.

Hope to update you very very soon about the Blood work, and the PELD score. XOXO

I particularly liked the comment about the beer cart at the horse show; sounds like something my hubby would say! • Another milestone!

Lisa, please feel free to vent your frustrations. You know that we would charge down there at the drop of a hat, the proverbial cavalry to the rescue! (Can't you just picture all of us riding down the main drag to the hospital on our motley assortment of horses?)

                                Joey:
A bass boat? Isn't a boat a boat? Can't you catch bass from any ol' boat? Why does it have to be a "bass boat?" I suppose that is like when we say we must have a dressage saddle, a jumping saddle, and an all-purpose saddle!

I'm looking into the future and I see you and Aiden fishing in your favorite secret spot while Lisa is at a show on the horse you surprised her with - if any family has earned some special moments, you have.

Lisa, you know what really made me think in your last post? The statement about Aiden's status on the waiting list being reviewed. I cannot imagine that there are sicker children out there, but golly, I guess there are.

'Scuse me. I have to go hug some kids.

                                Have a great "birthday," Aiden!

You are right, I think the same thing. It seems like to me that Aiden is the sickest ever. But he is my baby. Juts so everyone knows where they are apealing Aiden, they are asking for a PELD of 40 with URGENT status. A 40 is the max number. Aiden will be 2nd from the top. The highest is teen. I am not sure if he has been transplanted or not. I don't want to get my hopes up, but I started to cry when Joey told me that they were apealing a 40.

You think we are serious about our equipment, you should see my hubby's "reels". He polishes them like they are diamonds. Haha I laugh so hard, it makes me think about how I would get bits out and scrub them with a scrub brush. (he hasn't been bass fishing in over a year and a half! He misses it too.) Aiden has his very own Snoopy fishing pole. The bobber is a little woodstock and snoopy. How cute. It is miniature size.
